Carpenter Bee Holes: What to Know About the 3-Ingredient DIY Spray and WD-40

A 3-ingredient peppermint-and-soap spray has been suggested for carpenter bees, but its effectiveness has not been established by the extension sources reviewed. The evidence about WD-40 is also mixed, so it is not accurate to say categorically that it never works. For holes in a home’s wood, extension guidance focuses on treating active galleries with an appropriately labeled product, sealing them at the recommended time, and protecting exposed wood against future nesting.

What is the 3-ingredient spray recipe?

A Tom’s Guide article published October 8, 2026, reports this mixture for misting exposed, unpainted wood:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • 500 ml water
  • 1 tablespoon liquid Castile soap
  • 5–10 drops peppermint essential oil

The article says to shake the mixture before use. That is a reported DIY suggestion, not a treatment validated by the university and extension sources cited below. Those sources do not establish that it kills carpenter bees, reaches a nest, or prevents new galleries. Do not treat it as a substitute for addressing an active hole.

Why a carpenter bee hole needs more than a surface spray

Carpenter bees bore into exposed wood to make nesting galleries; they do not eat wood like termites. A round opening about 1/2 inch in diameter can be an entrance, according to Penn State Extension, though appearance alone does not confirm activity. Penn State Extension’s carpenter bee guidance explains identification and control.

A mist on the wood surface is not the same as treating a gallery. If you find a hole, first determine whether it is active and whether you can address it safely. Avoid indiscriminately spraying bees in flight. Carpenter bees are pollinators, so the practical aim is to limit structural nesting damage rather than eliminate every bee from the yard. University of Maryland Extension’s guidance discusses treatment and prevention.

Does WD-40 work on carpenter bee holes?

The evidence in the cited extension material does not support a categorical claim either that WD-40 always works or that it cannot work. One Ask Extension response lists WD-40 among possible treatments, but that answer is not a product label or a broad safety study. It does not establish long-term effectiveness or suitability for every wood surface. The Ask Extension response is best read as one expert answer, not universal guidance.

WD-40 Specialist Silicone Lubricant, New Bigger Can, 13.3 OZ [1-Pack]
  • RELIABLE LUBRICATION: Provides smooth, reliable lubrication without attracting dirt or debris for a cleaner operation.
  • NO MESSY RESIDUE: Dries to a clear finish without messy or sticky residue behind.
  • BUILT FOR AUTO & EQUIPMENT USE: Ideal for window tracks, guide rails, pulleys, valves, hinges, locks, and machine equipment.
  • REDUCES FRICTION & WEAR: Lowers resistance on tracks, cables, pulleys, and linkages to keep components and equipment moving freely.
  • SAFE ON MULTIPLE SURFACES: Designed for use on most metal, rubber, vinyl, plastic, and other non-metal surfaces without degrading materials.

For a structural hole, rely on treatment directions that specifically cover the pest, application site, and use. Follow the product label and local extension guidance; do not assume that a household product is an approved or lasting nest treatment. Claims that WD-40 necessarily stains wood, damages sealant, or harms soil and pollinators are not established by the sources cited here.

How to address an active gallery safely

  1. Assess the location. Check whether the opening appears active and whether it is reachable from stable ground. Galleries overhead or requiring a ladder or step stool are better handled by a licensed pest control professional, as Penn State and Maryland Extension advise.
  2. Choose a labeled treatment. Penn State Extension recommends insecticide dust applied directly into nest openings; Maryland Extension advises using an appropriately labeled insecticide in galleries. Use a product only where its label permits, and follow all directions for application and protective equipment.
  3. Do not plug an untreated active hole. Treat first according to the product label and local extension advice, then seal when directed. Plugging a live tunnel can trap bees or prompt them to chew another exit, cautions this Ask Extension response. There is no universal waiting period; use the timing specified by the label and local guidance.
  4. Seal and repair at the appropriate time. After treatment, close the gallery as directed and repair the wood surface. Caulk or putty alone does not control an active nest.
  5. Call a professional when needed. Extensive galleries, uncertain activity, difficult access, or uncertainty about safe treatment are good reasons to consult a licensed professional.

Preventing new holes in exposed wood

Painting or sealing exposed wood can discourage future boring, although it is not a guarantee. Ohio State Extension recommends treating active holes before filling them and notes that painting afterward can discourage drilling; its Ask Extension response addresses that sequence. Keep wood surfaces maintained, particularly where prior galleries or exposed, unfinished wood are present.

WD-40 Classic Product, Multi-Use Product with Smart Straw Sprays 2 Ways, 9.6 OZ [2-Pack]
  • Drives out moisture and quickly dries out electrical systems to eliminate moisture-induced short circuit
  • Acts as a corrosion inhibitor to shield against moisture and other corrosive elements to prevent rust
  • Frees sticky mechanisms, loosens rust-to-metal bonds and helps release stuck, frozen or rusted metal parts
  • Helps life grease, grime, gunk, gum, tar, sap, super glue, sticker residue, and other sticky stuff from multiple surfaces
  • Lubricates moving parts such as hinges, wheels, pulleys, rollers, chains, and gears

Carpenter bee traps may be a supplemental option in some situations, not a repair for a gallery or a replacement for treating an active nest. An extension response says traps may be most useful early in the season when bee numbers are low. The Ask Extension answer on traps provides that limited guidance.
