Before troubleshooting a Carlin gas burner, identify the full burner model, primary-control model, and manual revision. Carlin’s manuals are model-specific, and they reserve troubleshooting procedures for qualified service technicians. If the burner is locked out or will not start, note the control’s display or LED indication without opening the equipment, then contact a qualified technician with those details.

Identify the burner and control first

Read the burner and control nameplates, and locate the manual that matches both the equipment and its revision. Do not infer a setting or fault from another Carlin model: burner size, control, ignition components, and service procedures differ. If a label is missing or unreadable, give the technician the appliance details and any information you can identify without removing a cover.

Model Manufacturer-listed fuel and input Manual to match
201GAS Natural gas or propane; 150,000–399,000 Btuh input, per Carlin’s product page accessed in 2026. Carlin 201GAS instruction manual, MN201GAS-122816-r3
601GAS Natural gas or propane; 700,000–1,500,000 Btuh input, per Carlin’s product page accessed in 2026. Carlin 601GAS instruction manual, MN601GAS-012821

These are distinct application ranges, not evidence that one burner can replace the other. A replacement must match the appliance, fuel, firing requirements, and burner configuration, and must be selected and installed by qualified professionals. Carlin provides model information and parts resources on its manufacturer website.

Safety comes before diagnosis

Carlin’s 601GAS manual states, “These procedures must only be performed by a qualified service technician.” It warns about electrically or mechanically live parts and directs that power be disconnected and the main manual gas valve closed when components are removed for service. These are service precautions, not a homeowner repair sequence. Do not open the burner, test live wiring, alter gas pressure, change an orifice, move an electrode or flame rod, or keep resetting a control that locks out.

A lockout is a protective control response; by itself, it does not identify a failed part. Record the exact displayed message or LED pattern, when the symptom occurs, and whether it began after a service visit or appliance change. Share that information with a qualified technician.

Burner motor will not start

For the 601GAS, Carlin’s troubleshooting table directs the technician to investigate categories including supply voltage and polarity, fuse or breaker, the appliance limit or call-for-heat circuit, electrical connections, and primary-control lockout or latch-up. These are not safe homeowner tests. Note whether the control shows a fault and whether the appliance is requesting heat, if that information is visible without opening equipment; leave electrical diagnosis to the technician using the matching manual.

When a burner starts but fails to remain operating, the 201GAS and 601GAS manuals identify several possible diagnostic areas. The technician determines which apply and in what order; the symptom alone does not establish which component or condition is responsible.

  • Ignition: spark generation, electrode condition, and associated wiring.
  • Flame sensing: flame-rod signal, grounding, contamination, and position.
  • Combustion and venting: airflow setting and draft.
  • Fuel delivery: correct model-specific orifice, gas supply, and manifold pressure.
  • Electrical supply: polarity and other model-specific control requirements.

Do not reposition ignition or flame-sensing parts or adjust airflow, gas pressure, or an orifice. Required values and procedures depend on the exact burner, installation, and appliance instructions. For the 201GAS, the manual cites 0.8 microamps as a flame-signal diagnostic threshold; it is a technician measurement, not a homeowner test or a universal setting for Carlin burners.

Repeated lockout or a control that will not reset

Carlin describes diagnostic LED states and reset protection for the models covered by its product information. The meaning depends on the installed control. Record the indication once and arrange qualified service rather than repeatedly resetting the burner; repeated resets do not diagnose or correct the underlying condition.

If the fault returns or other gas appliances are affected

The 201GAS manual notes that gas-supply pressure can be affected when other appliances share a line or regulator. If the burner’s behavior changes when another gas appliance operates, tell the technician which appliance was running and when the symptom occurred. Do not adjust a regulator. If the technician finds the supply inadequate, they can determine whether the gas supplier should be contacted.

What to give the service technician

  • Full burner model and primary-control model, plus the manual revision if known.
  • The exact control display or LED indication and whether the burner starts, attempts ignition, or locks out.
  • When the problem began, how often it occurs, and whether it followed service or a change in other gas-appliance use.
  • Appliance make and model, fuel type if known, and any recent service information.

Use the matching Carlin manual as the service reference, not as a do-it-yourself repair guide. For model identification and official documentation, consult the Carlin website or have a qualified technician identify the correct manual.
