Seattle agtech company Carbon Robotics received another high-profile mention from Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in February 2026. During episode 2461 of The Joe Rogan Experience, Kennedy praised the company’s LaserWeeder as a potential way for farmers to reduce herbicide use and labor costs. But his comments are publicity, not independent technical validation, federal approval, or proof that every farm can save money by replacing its weed-control program.
What RFK Jr. said about Carbon Robotics
According to GeekWire’s February 28, 2026 report, Kennedy discussed Carbon’s laser-weeding technology on The Joe Rogan Experience. He said the equipment could give farmers an “off-ramp” from pesticides while reducing costs and labor requirements.

Kennedy also said he had recently met three farmers using the equipment and repeated a claim that a large Texas onion producer saved more than $1,000 per acre. That figure should be treated as a reported claim from Kennedy’s remarks—not as a universal result or an independently audited return-on-investment figure.

What Carbon Robotics builds
Carbon Robotics is a Seattle-based agricultural technology company founded in 2018, according to GeekWire. Founder and CEO Paul Mikesell previously co-founded Isilon Systems and led infrastructure engineering at Uber. GeekWire reported that the company manufactures in Richland, Washington, had raised $177 million, and employed about 260 people at the time of its February 2026 article. Those figures are a point-in-time company snapshot, not necessarily current totals.
Carbon describes itself as a “physical AI” company for agriculture. Its product portfolio includes the LaserWeeder, Carbon AI, Carbon Ops Center, and Carbon Autonomy. The company’s focus is specialized agricultural machinery and software—not consumer robots for gardens or small plots.
How the LaserWeeder works
The commercial LaserWeeder is a tractor-mounted implement. Its operating sequence is:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Cameras capture images of crop rows.
- Computer-vision models identify crop plants and weeds.
- The system calculates the weed’s location.
- A laser targets the weed’s growing point, or meristem.
- The weed is destroyed without direct herbicide application or mechanical cultivation at that point.
Carbon says its system combines high-resolution cameras, Nvidia GPUs, deep-learning crop models, LED lighting, and multiple laser modules. Its technology page says the machine can operate day or night and in varied conditions; those are manufacturer claims that should be evaluated against a farm’s actual crops, weather, soil, and operating window.

On the standard LaserWeeder page, Carbon lists 42 high-resolution cameras, nine high-intensity LED light bars, 30 150-watt diode lasers, more than 100 AI crop models, and sub-millimeter targeting accuracy. The company claims a weed-kill rate of up to 99%, but that specification should not be read as a guaranteed result across every crop, weed species, field, or growth stage.
This is large farm equipment, not a small autonomous robot
The standard LaserWeeder is listed at 20 feet wide and 9,500 pounds. Carbon specifies a minimum 175-horsepower tractor and 90 horsepower of rated PTO power. Its listed operating rate is 0.5 to 1.5 acres per hour, with a claimed capacity of more than 5,000 weeds per minute.
Carbon also markets a LaserWeeder G2 range, including G2 200, 300, 400, 600, and 1200 configurations. The G2 600, for example, is listed at 7,200 pounds, covers 1.5 to 3 acres per hour, can shoot up to 10,000 weeds per minute, and requires a minimum 145-horsepower tractor. Those figures apply to the G2 600 specifically; they should not be used to describe every G2 model.

Carbon’s results page lists specialty row crops such as broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, chard, cilantro, kale, lettuce, onions, spinach, and tomatoes. It also describes a G2 1200 application for 40-foot organic corn and soybean rows. Buyers need to confirm the exact model, bed and row spacing, crop, tractor compatibility, and service availability before assuming the machine will fit a particular operation.

The company says more than 100 growers own and operate LaserWeeders. Its product page lists a one-year warranty and 24/7 software and remote support. Carbon does not show a purchase price on its sales page; prospective buyers are directed to submit a sales inquiry.
Autonomy depends on which Carbon product is being discussed
Calling every LaserWeeder a self-driving robot would be misleading. Carbon’s commercial LaserWeeder is presented primarily as a tractor-mounted implement operated through an iPad app and supported by connected software.
Carbon has also demonstrated an autonomous LaserWeeder, but the company’s product information described that unit as a field-demonstration model rather than the standard commercial configuration. Separately, Carbon markets Carbon Autonomy, which it says can be installed on certain John Deere 6R, 8R, 8RX, and 8RT tractors from 2019 onward without permanent modifications. A farm evaluating autonomy should verify the supported tractor model, supervision requirements, safety procedures, and local service arrangements.
The economics are promising but highly farm-specific
Several different economic claims are circulating:
- Kennedy’s reported claim: More than $1,000 saved per acre at a Texas onion producer.
- Carbon’s marketing claims: Cost reductions of up to 80%, potential payback in one to three years, and a machine lifespan of seven to 10 years.
- Grower testimonial: A testimonial on Carbon’s support page says labor costs fell from $700,000 to about $300,000.
These numbers are not interchangeable. Per-acre savings depend on acreage, weed pressure, labor rates, herbicide use, machine utilization, financing, maintenance, field conditions, and the cost of alternative cultivation. Labor savings are not the same as total ownership savings. A customer testimonial reflects one reported experience, while a payback period is a company estimate—not a guaranteed industry average.

A realistic ownership model should include the purchase or lease price, financing, tractor requirements, transport, fuel, operator labor, maintenance, software or support charges, insurance, downtime, residual value, and the number of acres treated each season. A machine can have impressive hourly capacity and still produce a poor return if it is underused or cannot operate during a farm’s narrow weeding window.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The AI advantage—and its limits
Carbon announced a Large Plant Model in February 2026. The company says it was trained on 150 million labeled plants collected from machines operating across 15 countries and more than 100 crops. Its Carbon AI page also describes Plant Profiles, which allow growers to adjust model behavior using two or three field photos.
A large training dataset may help the system recognize more plant varieties and field conditions, but dataset size alone does not establish detection accuracy, crop safety, weed-kill performance, yield impact, or profitability. Carbon’s claim that growers can begin laser weeding a new field or crop within minutes should likewise be understood as a product claim that requires crop- and region-specific confirmation.
Carbon’s software includes the Ops Center, which provides coverage maps, crop and weed counts, weed density, size and type, heat maps, kill rate, acres covered, speed, and related performance data. Carbon Companion supports remote monitoring of machine location, activity, and daily metrics, while the iPad Operator App is used to start the machine and adjust weeding parameters. These tools improve visibility and control, but they do not remove the need for trained operators, field preparation, compatible equipment, and service support.

Where laser weeding can fit—and where it may not
The technology may be particularly valuable for commercial specialty-crop farms facing high hand-weeding costs, labor shortages, expensive herbicide programs, or organic-production requirements. It can target weeds within crop rows where conventional cultivation is difficult and may avoid the soil disturbance associated with some mechanical methods.
It does not automatically eliminate all other weed-control work. Farms may still need mechanical cultivation, hand labor, herbicides, or a combination of methods. Performance can vary with crop and weed appearance, crop stage, weed size, row geometry, visibility, weather, and field conditions. Similar-looking crops and weeds can create detection challenges, while late-season or unusually large weeds may be harder to control.
“Chemical-free” is therefore too broad a description for the whole production system. Laser weeding can reduce or avoid herbicide applications in suitable situations; it does not prove that every farm can immediately abandon pesticides.

Safety and operational questions
Carbon’s product page includes a Class 4 laser warning against exposure to direct or scattered laser radiation. Farms should require documented operating procedures, training, appropriate exclusion controls, and compliance with applicable workplace and equipment-safety requirements.
Before purchasing, a grower should ask:
- Does the exact machine match the farm’s crop, bed width, row spacing, and weed profile?
- Does the tractor meet horsepower, PTO, hitch, lift-capacity, hydraulic, and transmission requirements?
- How many acres can realistically be treated during the farm’s available operating window?
- What local parts, dealer, field-service, and remote-support coverage is available?
- What happens if the machine is down during a short critical weeding period?
- Are quoted savings gross reductions or net savings after financing, maintenance, fuel, labor, and depreciation?
- Can the vendor provide field results from comparable crops, regions, and weed conditions?
What the renewed attention means
Kennedy’s comments increase Carbon Robotics’ visibility among farmers, investors, technology readers, and policymakers interested in reducing pesticide use. They also fit his broader argument that farmers should have practical alternatives to herbicides.
But the central business question remains local and measurable: can a specific farm keep the machine productive enough to justify its capital and operating costs while achieving reliable weed control? The answer will depend far more on crop, acreage, labor economics, tractor fit, service access, and field performance than on a celebrity endorsement.
