Knox County’s reported plan is to widen the 1.7-mile stretch of Canton Hollow Road between Kingston Pike and Fox Road, widen its lanes from nine to 11 feet, add curbs and gutters, and improve sight lines. The county says it deferred the full project to prioritize Schaad Road, which officials judged more urgent on traffic, crash statistics, and vehicle delay. A report published October 5, 2026, says construction is expected to start in fiscal year 2029—not guaranteed—and take about two and a half years.
What is planned for Canton Hollow Road?
The project covers a narrow, winding road in Farragut with limited shoulders and sight lines. The Knoxville Regional Transportation Planning Organization is cited as the source for an estimate of about 5,400 vehicles per day; the report does not state the year for that estimate. The October 2026 report describes the planned work as widening nine-foot lanes to 11 feet, adding curbs and gutters, and improving sight lines. Knoxville News Sentinel report republished by AOL, October 5, 2026
The design described at a public meeting in 2017 included shifting the road west near a shopping center to avoid taking some properties on the east side. That was an earlier proposal; it does not establish the final alignment. Farragut Press, July 2017
Why hasn’t the full project happened yet?
There have been two distinct obstacles: project development and funding priority. The October 2026 report says environmental and utility permitting took considerable time. Knox County also reached agreements in late 2025 with Colonial Pipeline and Kinder Morgan, whose pipelines run beneath the road. The county now reports that it has secured the necessary rights-of-way and permits. Knoxville News Sentinel report republished by AOL, October 5, 2026

The current stated reason for putting off construction is the county’s choice to advance Schaad Road first. In August 2026, Knox County Engineering and Public Works Director Jim Snowden said the county could not fund both projects at once at their estimated costs. He said each was estimated at $20–22 million and that Schaad ranked higher on traffic volume, crash statistics, and vehicle delay. Those are the county’s stated grounds for its decision; the cited report does not provide the underlying side-by-side counts or calculations. Farragut Press, August 19, 2026
Snowden described the county’s assessment this way: “We would very much like to do both, but after a thorough review of the objective statistics, e.g., traffic volumes, crash statistics and vehicle delay, we realized that the Schaad Road project had higher metrics across all noted criteria.” Farragut Press, August 19, 2026

When is construction expected to begin?
The October 5, 2026 report says construction is expected to start in fiscal year 2029 and take about two and a half years. Knox County’s fiscal year begins July 1, so fiscal year 2029 starts July 1, 2028. These are reported expectations, not a guaranteed start date or completion deadline. A project listing based on public capital-improvement-plan information also cautions that scope, value, and schedule may change as funding and details evolve. What improvements are planned before construction?
County officials said they planned interim safety measures for fall 2026: skid-resistant asphalt, fresh striping, improved signs, and a warning flasher at a location where crashes have concentrated. Snowden said, “To combat these issues, we will repave the road with skid-resistant asphalt and install a warning flasher at the intersection this fall.” The October report also describes new striping and improved signage. The cited reporting does not verify whether these measures were completed. Farragut Press, August 19, 2026; Knoxville News Sentinel report republished by AOL, October 5, 2026

How long has the project been on the county’s agenda?
Canton Hollow improvements appeared in the Southwest County Sector Plan’s list of projects budgeted through the county Capital Improvement Plan in 2016. That establishes a place on the planning agenda, not a construction commitment or schedule. Southwest County Sector Plan, adopted September 2016
At a 2017 public meeting, residents saw an earlier proposal described as a roughly $7 million upgrade. That historical estimate is not a current project cost; the $20–22 million figure cited in 2026 applied to each of the two competing projects. In 2026, Commissioner Angela Russell said the postponement was two years in an email to a resident, while Snowden characterized it more generally as a few years. Does the reporting give a total for Canton Hollow crashes?
No verified total is provided in the cited reports. County officials refer to crash statistics and a crash concentration, but the available reporting does not establish how many crashes occurred on Canton Hollow over a specified period. It would be misleading to infer a count from those general references.
