Parts of Cannington Leisureplex reopened in the week of 18 September 2025 after eight months of closure. The work focused on poolside change rooms and amenities, an adult change bed, the first aid room and repairs to a tiled concourse wall—not a full closure of the entire centre.
What reopened at Cannington Leisureplex?
The reopening covered the poolside male, female and family/accessible change rooms. The refurbished spaces include new showers and toilet cubicles, with an adult change bed added to better support people with high care needs. An upgraded first aid room and repairs to the concourse’s tiled wall were also part of the completed work.
PerthNow reported the partial reopening on 18 September 2025, describing the affected areas as having been closed for eight months. That period applies to the parts undergoing work; it should not be read as an eight-month closure of the whole Leisureplex. PerthNow’s report described the centre as 13 years old at that time.
What changed in the refurbishment?
Poolside change rooms and showers
The male, female and family/accessible change rooms received new showers and toilet cubicles. The adult change bed is intended to make the facilities more supportive for visitors with high care needs.

How the work was scheduled
The City of Canning says renovations at Cannington and Riverton Leisureplexes began in February 2025. Its Cannington project updates said poolside change rooms were closed for refurbishment and a concourse area was restricted while the water-damaged tiled wall was repaired. An August update said the Cannington pool deck was on track for completion in early September, followed by detailed cleaning and final checks before opening. See the City’s Leisureplex Refurbishments project page.
The City’s project page also describes work at Riverton. Its Wellness Centre, Program Pool and HVAC work belongs to Riverton, not Cannington.

What the published figures do—and do not—show
The City’s 2025 project page says its Leisureplexes welcome over 1.5 million visitors per year, but does not identify a separate measurement year for that figure. It is a combined figure for the Leisureplexes, not a Cannington-only count. The reopening report’s eight-month closure describes the renovated parts, while its 13-year age description is specific to the facility as of September 2025.
The available project information does not establish a quantified accessibility outcome or water saving. It identifies the accessibility-focused adult change bed and the shower efficiency measures, but does not report measured results for either.
