A cordless-tool battery is not interchangeable with another brand’s tool just because both are labeled 18V or 20V. Use a cross-brand combination only when the manufacturers explicitly approve that exact pairing or both products belong to the same named battery alliance. Bosch AMPShare and the Cordless Alliance System (CAS) are examples of systems designed to share batteries across participating products; their approval does not extend to tools outside those systems.
Why matching voltage is not enough
Voltage is only one part of a battery system. A tool and battery must also be designed to connect and operate together. A similar voltage label—or a battery that can be made to fit—does not establish that the pairing is approved or safe. Compatibility should be confirmed for the exact battery, tool and, where relevant, charger, using the manufacturers’ documentation.

That distinction matters on a construction site: an unverified combination may not work as intended, and a physical adapter does not prove that the tool and battery’s electrical protections or charging requirements match. Do not treat nominal voltage or connector fit as a compatibility test. The same caution applies when two products are described as 18V or 20V: compatibility is platform-specific, not based on a universal rule tied to those numbers.
“Interchangeable” can also mean different things. A battery may physically attach to a tool, but that does not by itself verify that the tool maker approves it. And a battery that can power a tool is not automatically approved for a particular charger. Check each part of the proposed combination rather than treating a shared voltage, brand name, or adapter as the answer.

When cross-brand batteries are designed to work
Bosch AMPShare
AMPShare is a shared 18V system for Bosch Professional tools and participating partner products. Bosch says batteries, chargers and tools integrated into AMPShare are compatible across participating brands, and identifies the AMPShare label as the way to recognize products in the system. Its UK page names participating brands including FEIN, Rothenberger and Wagner. Check the specific product listing rather than assuming every product from any named brand belongs to AMPShare: Bosch Professional AMPShare.
Bosch’s FAQ describes the system’s boundary directly: “We ensure full compatibility between all batteries, chargers and tools that have been integrated into the AMPShare battery system – regardless of the brand of the product.” The important qualification is “integrated into” the system. It is not a blanket promise for every tool or battery made by every participating company. Verify that the exact item carries the AMPShare designation and is covered by the current listing.
Bosch’s US page describes compatibility with 150+ tools, while its UK page gives a broader alliance count of more than 35 brands and over 430 tools. These are claims from different Bosch pages with different scopes, not independently verified counts, and alliance rosters can change. Use the live product listings to verify a particular tool: Bosch Tools AMPShare.
AMPShare has a clear boundary: Bosch says it is not compatible with Bosch POWER FOR ALL. Shared branding or the same manufacturer does not make separate battery platforms interchangeable. Bosch’s FAQ says of AMPShare and POWER FOR ALL: “The two battery systems are not compatible.” Check the platform name, not just the manufacturer logo.

Cordless Alliance System (CAS)
CAS is another multi-brand 18V platform. The alliance says its batteries work with over 50 brands and more than 500 CAS tools, describing full compatibility within its participating professional 18V system. Those are CAS’s own current platform claims; confirm that both the battery and tool carry the CAS designation and appear in its product information. The claim does not cover products merely because they are 18V or made by a participating company: Cordless Alliance System.
AMPShare and CAS are useful options if you want tools from different manufacturers on a shared battery platform, but neither is a universal standard for all cordless tools. Their compatibility statements apply to participating products in their respective systems. Do not infer that AMPShare and CAS products can share batteries with each other; compatibility is confirmed within each alliance, not between the two.
Check battery, tool and charger separately
Compatibility is not a single yes-or-no question if you are also choosing a charger. A manufacturer may define a shared system that covers all three, but you should not infer charger compatibility from an adapter’s shape or from a battery’s ability to power a tool. AMPShare’s compatibility claim includes integrated batteries, chargers and tools within AMPShare; that does not establish that a charger outside the system is suitable.
Recommended Free Tools
- Identify the exact products. Note the full tool model, battery model and charger model, along with any platform name printed on their labels. If you are checking a set of tools, do this for each battery-and-tool pairing rather than assuming one answer applies across the set.
- Check the tool manual and official compatibility listing. Look for the exact battery or the named platform, not just a voltage rating. Confirm the product is actually listed as a member of a shared system such as AMPShare or CAS.
- Verify the charger independently. Use only a charger that the manufacturer identifies as compatible with that battery and system. Do not assume that a charger is approved because an adapter makes the battery fit, or because the battery works in a tool.
- Read the maker’s safety and warranty guidance. Confirm whether the proposed pairing is approved and whether using an adapter or non-approved equipment affects service or coverage. Pay attention to the region and date of a notice; warranty language may be market-specific.
- If the exact combination is not confirmed, do not use it. Ask the tool or battery manufacturer for confirmation rather than treating an unlisted pairing as compatible. A combination that has not been confirmed remains unverified, even if its voltage and connector appear to match.
Use the same checks when buying replacement batteries or expanding a tool collection. A product listing for one battery or tool does not automatically establish that another model in the same maker’s range belongs to the same platform. Alliance participation and product lists can change, so check the live official information before purchase or use.

Why battery adapters are not proof of compatibility
A third-party battery adapter may bridge a physical connection, but fit does not establish that the battery, tool and any charger are electrically compatible, that their protection systems work together, or that the manufacturer approves the combination. An adapter should not be treated as equivalent to a shared platform’s official compatibility listing. A generic search for a “cordless tool battery adapter” is therefore not enough to identify a safe or approved pairing; the exact products and the makers’ guidance still matter.
Makita Power Tools (HK) Limited states that genuine Makita lithium-ion batteries are designed for Makita cordless tools and corresponding chargers. Its safety notice warns that adapters or non-approved equipment may reduce battery life or create safety hazards, and says improper or unauthorized use is outside its warranty or repair coverage. This is a statement from Makita Hong Kong dated January 2, 2026; it should not be generalized into a worldwide warranty ruling for every market. The English page says the Chinese original prevails if there is a discrepancy: Makita Hong Kong safety statement.
That warning is a specific manufacturer statement, not a claim that every adapter in every market has the same outcome. It does show why physical fit and manufacturer approval are separate questions. No hands-on testing of particular battery adapters or cross-brand pairings is established here, so an unlisted combination should not be presented as tested or compatible.

What to do when a battery will not fit or is not listed
- Do not force the connection. A connector that looks similar is not confirmation that the products belong to the same system.
- Do not rely on an adapter alone. Check whether both manufacturers explicitly approve the exact battery-and-tool combination and whether the charger is separately approved.
- Use the intended platform. If the manufacturer does not confirm compatibility, use a battery and charger listed for that tool.
- For cross-brand flexibility, choose a verified alliance system. Buy products that are explicitly marked and listed for AMPShare or CAS, and check each item’s current compatibility information.
If you already own tools from different brands, first check whether the specific products you have are members of the same alliance. If they are not, do not assume a cross-brand battery solution based on voltage alone. An approved shared platform is a more substantiated path for cross-brand use, but only for products carrying that system designation and listed as compatible.

Costs, availability and what the current listings do not establish
No specific battery, tool, charger or adapter prices were verified for this article, and no affiliate program or availability was confirmed. Costs depend on the exact products and market, so a price comparison would require current listings for the models you are considering. The evidence supports comparing platform membership and exact compatibility first; it does not support recommending a particular adapter or claiming that switching platforms will save money.
The alliance counts above are manufacturer or alliance claims, not independent market or safety statistics. They refer to different pages and scopes and should not be combined into a single total. Product rosters may change, so consult the current official listings rather than relying on an old count or an older product description.
Bottom line for a specific tool and battery
Different brands’ cordless-tool batteries can work together only within a deliberately shared system or when the manufacturers approve the exact pairing. Voltage labels and adapters are not enough. Verify the battery, tool and charger against current official documentation; if the combination is not listed or confirmed, treat it as incompatible.

Can I really run different tool brands on one AMPShare battery?
Bosch says batteries, chargers and tools integrated into AMPShare are compatible across participating brands. Check that each exact product carries the AMPShare designation and appears in current system information; the claim does not cover every product from a participating brand.
Are Bosch AMPShare and POWER FOR ALL batteries interchangeable?
No. Bosch states that AMPShare and POWER FOR ALL are not compatible systems, despite sharing the Bosch name.
Does a battery adapter make different brands’ batteries compatible?
No. An adapter may bridge a physical connection, but it does not establish electrical, charging, safety or warranty compatibility. Check manufacturer guidance for the exact battery, tool and charger.
Are CAS batteries interchangeable with every tool from a CAS brand?
CAS describes compatibility within its participating professional 18V system. Confirm that the particular battery and tool are identified as CAS products and listed as compatible; brand membership alone is not enough.
Can I use a different brand’s charger if the battery fits?
Do not assume so. Check charger compatibility separately. A fit or an adapter does not prove that the charger is approved for that battery.
Does Makita’s adapter warning apply everywhere?
The cited notice is from Makita Power Tools (HK) Limited, dated January 2, 2026. It warns about adapters and non-approved equipment, but it should not be generalized into a worldwide warranty ruling for every Makita market.
The Bottom Line
Use different brands’ cordless-tool batteries together only when the exact products are approved by their manufacturers or belong to the same verified alliance system. A matching 18V or 20V label, a shared brand, or an adapter is not proof. Check the tool, battery and charger against current official compatibility information; if the pairing is not confirmed, treat it as incompatible.
