Used coffee grounds are not a dependable fertilizer or soil acidifier for rhododendrons. They contain some nutrients, but not enough to meet a shrub’s needs, and brewing leaves them close to neutral. Recycle them in compost if you like; for the plant, check the soil and use rhododendron-appropriate care.
Why coffee grounds won’t fertilize or acidify a rhododendron reliably
Oregon State University Extension Service reports that spent coffee grounds are about pH 6.5–6.8 after brewing, and that their effect on soil pH is temporary. They will not reliably make the soil acidic enough for a rhododendron. (Oregon State University Extension Service; Oregon State University Newsroom)
Grounds contain nitrogen—Oregon State Extension gives a range of 1%–2%—and trace nutrients, but the amounts do not make them a major or complete plant food. Fresh grounds decomposing in soil can also temporarily tie up nitrogen, potentially making it less available to plants. Soil scientist Linda Brewer of Oregon State Extension cautions: “I’ve seen raised beds ruined by too much coffee. Like most kitchen waste, it’s a fine amendment, but coffee can be overdone.”
Choose the right route for your goal
| Goal | What to do | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Reuse kitchen grounds | Mix them into a varied compost pile in moderation. | Recycles organic material; it does not guarantee acidic soil or supply a rhododendron’s full nutrition. |
| Support a rhododendron | Check soil pH and plant condition; if fertilizer is needed, choose one labeled for acid-loving plants and follow its label. | Addresses the shrub’s needs more directly, guided by local soil conditions and test results. |
These are different jobs: composting grounds is a waste-reuse choice, while fertilizing is a plant-care decision. Don’t spread grounds around the shrub expecting them to do both.

How to compost coffee grounds safely
-
Keep grounds to no more than 20% of the compost pile by volume, following Oregon State Extension guidance.
-
Balance them with other material. One suggested mix by volume is three parts leaves, one part fresh grass clippings and one part coffee grounds.

-
Turn the pile weekly and monitor its moisture as it decomposes.
If you apply grounds directly as a general garden amendment, Oregon State Extension describes incorporating a half-inch layer into soil to a depth of four inches. This is general soil-amendment guidance, not a recommended rhododendron fertilizer dose, and it is not necessary simply because you have grounds available.

If you use grounds near the shrub, avoid a thick layer
Fine grounds can compact into a mat, and dry grounds can repel water. If you choose to use them as mulch, keep the layer thin and cover it with leaves or bark mulch, as Oregon State Extension advises. Composting is the more controlled way to reuse them.

Rhododendrons and azaleas prefer acidic soil. Oregon State Extension gives an ideal range of pH 4.5–6.0; an Ask Extension response gives 5.5–6.0. These are source-specific recommendations, not a reason to assume every site needs adjustment. Excessive alkalinity can make nutrients unavailable, so measure soil pH before attempting to change it. A laboratory soil test is more accurate than a home test, according to Ask Extension. (Oregon State University Extension Service; Ask Extension; Ask Extension)

If fertilizing is indicated, use a product formulated for acid-loving plants, guided by the test results and the product label. Do not use aluminum sulfate as a casual pH fix: the Ask Extension response warns that aluminum can build up in soil.
