Usually, yes—but whether a 2-liter plastic water bottle belongs in your recycling depends on your local program. Empty it, then check your municipality or waste hauler’s current instructions for the bottle, cap, and label. A number inside the recycling-style triangle identifies the plastic; it does not promise that your community collects it.
Check local rules before putting it out
Recycling systems rely on local collection and processing, so a bottle accepted in one area may not be accepted in another. Look up your municipal recycling guide or private hauler’s accepted-material list. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also advises checking local requirements: How Do I Recycle Common Recyclables?
Check whether the instructions cover PET beverage bottles, as well as curbside collection or an accepted drop-off location. If your jurisdiction has a deposit-return system, check whether the bottle qualifies and where to return it.
How to prepare the bottle
- Empty it. EPA’s general guidance for accepted containers is to empty them and rinse or scrape away food debris. For a water bottle, this does not mean extensive washing is universally required.
- Check cap and label rules. EPA says caps and labels can typically remain on, but local programs may differ. Follow your program’s directions.
- Do not assume you should crush it. There is no universal crush-or-don’t-crush rule established by the general guidance here; use your local provider’s instructions.
What the number on the bottle means
The resin identification number indicates the type of plastic. It can help identify material for sorting, but it is not a guarantee of local collection. EPA explains that the triangle around the resin number resembles a recycling symbol, but “does not necessarily mean it can be collected for recycling in your community.” See the EPA’s recycling guidance for the distinction.

What national recycling figures can—and cannot—tell you
EPA reported that 29.1% of PET bottles and jars were recycled in the United States in 2018, representing 910,000 tons. That historical national estimate is not a current local rate and does not isolate 2-liter water bottles. EPA also reported that 13.6% of all plastic containers and packaging generated in 2018 was recycled, a broader category than PET beverage bottles. For less bottle waste in the future
EPA’s waste-management hierarchy puts reducing and reusing ahead of recycling. If it suits your routine, refilling a reusable bottle, using tap-water filtration, or carrying a thermos can reduce future disposable-bottle use.
