Sometimes—but there is no rule that applies to every air fryer. Follow the instructions for your exact appliance. Philips advises against foil in the Airfryer models covered by its guidance: foil can interfere with airflow, and loose foil may be pulled toward the heating element and burn. A range oven’s Air Fry instructions do not automatically apply to a countertop air fryer.
Why your air fryer’s instructions matter
Air fryers differ in design, so one manufacturer’s directions should not be treated as permission—or a prohibition—for every brand and model. Check the manual for your specific appliance before adding foil. If its instructions say not to use foil, or allow it only in specified locations, follow those directions.

Philips Airfryers covered by Philips guidance
Philips says using baking paper or foil is not recommended for the models covered by its support guidance. Covering the basket bottom can reduce airflow and cooking performance. Foil in the grease-collection pan can also disrupt airflow.

Philips also warns that unsupported material may be drawn toward the heating element and start to burn. In its words: “If you put baking paper or tin foil in your Philips Airfryer without placing food on it, the baking paper or tin foil could be sucked into the heating element and start to burn.”

Ranges with an Air Fry mode
Whirlpool’s foil instructions concern an oven or range with an Air Fry mode: they describe a foil-lined baking sheet on a lower rack, with space below the air fry basket for airflow. That setup is different from a countertop basket air fryer, so those directions do not establish that foil is safe in a countertop model.
If your manual permits foil
- Use it only where and in the manner the appliance manual allows.
- Do not cover airflow openings or place foil where it could obstruct circulation.
- Do not put loose foil in the appliance without food holding it in place; Philips identifies this as a burn risk for the models covered by its guidance.
A manual excerpt for an unidentified air fryer model says not to use metal foil unless directed. Because the excerpt does not clearly identify the model, it cannot establish a general rule; it reinforces the need to check the instructions for your own appliance.

Consider a perforated liner for cleanup
Perforated liners are not automatically compatible with every air fryer. Reynolds says its air fryer liners have ¼-inch holes for airflow and are heat-safe up to 400°F on the air fryer setting only. Those are Reynolds product specifications, not a universal limit or approval for other liners. Check both your air fryer manual and the liner packaging before use.
