Yes—if the LED bulb or fixture is marked dimmable and is compatible with the specific dimmer. The label alone is not a guarantee: check the dimmer maker’s compatibility list, load rating, wiring requirements, and whether your lights are controlled from one location or several. This guide is US-oriented; electrical requirements vary by jurisdiction.
How to check whether an LED and dimmer are compatible
- Identify the exact LED. Confirm that the bulb or integrated fixture is dimmable, and note its make and model.
- Check the dimmer’s compatibility list. Use the manufacturer’s selector or list for the exact dimmer model. Leviton warns that not all LED bulbs dim smoothly with every Leviton dimmer and provides a compatibility tool. Lutron likewise says there are no universal manufacturing standards for dimmable LEDs, making the specific bulb-and-dimmer pairing important (Lutron compatibility information).
- Match the electrical and control requirements. Check voltage, total LED wattage, supported load type, neutral-wire requirement, and whether the dimmer supports single-pole or multi-location control. Use the specifications for the exact model, not a similar-looking dimmer.
What to check in the dimmer specifications
Ratings and wiring options vary by model. For example, Leviton lists the SureSlide 6672-1LT for 120 VAC, single-pole use, with or without a neutral; its specified capacity is 150 W LED or 600 W incandescent/halogen. Leviton directs buyers to its compatibility tool for bulb pairings (6672-1LT product specifications). This is one model’s specification, not a universal rating or guarantee that it will work with your LEDs.
For multi-location control, choose a dimmer explicitly rated for that arrangement and follow its wiring diagram. The Leviton example above is single-pole, so it is not a general solution for circuits controlled from multiple locations.
Does an LED dimmer need a neutral wire?
There is no universal answer. Some models are designed to work without a neutral; others require one. Leviton specifies that the 6672-1LT can be installed with or without a neutral. By contrast, Lutron says its Caséta PD-5NE requires a neutral and lists a 250 W LED capacity for that model (PD-5NE support specifications). Lutron’s cited reverse-phase product guide also specifies a neutral requirement (reverse-phase product guide). Check the precise dimmer’s instructions and the wiring in your wall box before choosing a model.

Why LED lights flicker, dim unevenly, or glow when switched off
Flicker or unstable dimming
A bulb-and-dimmer mismatch or an unsuitable low-end setting can cause flicker or erratic dimming. Confirm the exact pairing in the manufacturer’s compatibility tool. Some dimmers provide an adjustable low-end trim; use the procedure in that model’s instructions rather than assuming every dimmer has the same adjustment (Lutron LED troubleshooting and compatibility guidance).
Glow or flicker when the dimmer is off
Some non-neutral, two-wire digital dimmers pass a small current through the lighting load to power their electronics. A sensitive LED may respond with a faint glow or flicker. Check the bulb-and-dimmer pairing and the device’s troubleshooting instructions; for applicable circuits, a neutral-required dimmer may be an option. Lutron identifies its LUT-MLC shunt capacitor for certain digital switches but explicitly warns not to use it with dimming devices, so it is not a general fix for a dimmer problem (Lutron troubleshooting guidance).

Installation: follow the exact model instructions
There is no single wiring recipe for every dimmer, fixture, or multi-way circuit. Turn off power at the breaker or fuse before working, follow the wiring diagram for the exact device, and comply with applicable electrical codes. Lutron’s MA-PRO instructions warn: “WARNING: ELECTRIC SHOCK HAZARD. May result in Serious Injury or Death. Turn off power at circuit breaker or fuse before installing.” Those instructions apply to that product, not every dimmer (MA-PRO installation instructions).
Do not rely on generic wire-color instructions. If you cannot confidently identify the circuit, wiring, load type, or local code requirements, have a licensed electrician assess the installation.
