Sometimes—but only when the manufacturer approves wall mounting for the exact speaker model. A speaker that fits a wall opening is not automatically suitable for vertical installation. Check the model’s manual or ask the manufacturer before cutting; the Micca M-8C and M-6C are documented examples whose manual permits wall as well as ceiling mounting.
When can a ceiling speaker go in a wall?
It depends on the speaker, not its shape or the size of its grille. The Micca M-8C/M-6C manual says those models can be mounted in walls and ceilings. That is model-specific approval, not a general rule for in-ceiling speakers.
For these Micca models, the manual says they can be mounted in any orientation to provide proper coverage at the listener’s position. Other speakers may have different requirements for orientation, aiming, or placement. If your manual does not explicitly allow wall installation, contact the manufacturer or choose a model designed for wall use rather than assuming it will work.
What to verify before choosing a location
Use the exact model number and its installation manual to check these points before marking or cutting the wall:

- SOLIDLY BUILT FRAMES - The frames are made of heavy-duty plastic and are ultra-rigid, preventing wall speaker mount brackets from bending or breaking. Each frame features strain relief wire guides to help with the connection of speaker wire
- ADJUSTABLE LENGTH - Surround sound speaker mounts with hanging hardware brackets & perforated breakaway wings to adjust length, allowing for a hassle-free setup with no damage to wall or ceiling; incl. 2 mounting brackets, 4 plastic wings & 12 screws
- VERSATILE COMPATABILITY WITH POLK SPEAKERS - These brackets are designed for use with Polk LC80i, TC80i, SC90, RC80i, LC90F/X, LC80i-IP, SC80-IPR, 80-F/X-LS,80-F/X-RT, MC80, & V80 in-ceiling speakers for speaker mount wall use (all sold separately)
- Approved surface and orientation: Confirm the manual allows the speaker to be installed in a vertical wall.
- Fit: Check the specified cutout dimensions, mounting depth, wall thickness, and any required bracket or back box.
- Coverage: Make sure the speaker’s driver and tweeter arrangement can serve the listening position in the planned orientation.
- Wall conditions: Confirm the cavity is clear, the wall can support the speaker, and the installation will not interfere with building features.
- Wiring: Follow the speaker instructions and applicable local requirements for cable concealed in the wall.
OEM Systems’ speaker-selection guide discusses choosing speakers for wall and ceiling placements and notes that round speakers are less suited to vertical surfaces. If the wall location matters, a speaker specifically documented for wall use is the more reliable choice.
How to check the wall safely
- Inspect the location before making an opening. Check for studs, electrical wiring, pipes, and other obstructions. Micca, Klipsch, and Canton all provide installation or safety guidance to check the intended area; Canton warns that concealed cables or pipes can make drilling dangerous.
- Do not treat a stud finder as proof of a clear cavity. It can help locate framing, but it does not establish that the space is free of wiring, plumbing, or other hazards.
- Keep the opening clear of fire stops. Klipsch cautions installers not to compromise fire stops between studs. If the proposed opening or cable route would affect a fire stop, do not cut through it without an appropriate, code-compliant plan.
- Use the model’s specified cutout and mounting method. Follow its dimensions, support, and fastening instructions rather than adapting a ceiling-only installation by guesswork.
- Use suitable concealed cable. GoldenEar specifies in-wall-rated cable in its manual; Rockville describes CL2-rated cable for in-wall and in-ceiling use. The right rating depends on the installation and local requirements, so treat product guidance as an example—not a jurisdiction-specific code ruling.
Manufacturer instructions do not replace applicable local building requirements. If you cannot confirm the cavity is safe, the wall’s support is adequate, or the wiring route is compliant, consult a qualified installer before proceeding.

What to do if wall mounting is not approved
Do not infer approval from a matching cutout or a round grille. Ask the manufacturer whether the exact model is suitable for vertical installation, or select an architectural speaker whose documentation expressly covers wall placement. That gives you a documented mounting method and placement guidance for the intended surface.
