Yes—but sawdust needs a binder or matrix and a forming process to become a composite. Published work includes a prototype furniture part made with polypropylene and factory waste sawdust, but it does not establish a simple, load-bearing DIY furniture recipe. For a home experiment, treat the result as a sample, not as a chair or table component.
What can you mix with sawdust to make it solid?
In a composite, sawdust is the filler; a binder or matrix holds the particles together. Research has explored wood sanding dust with polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) adhesive and epoxy resin, as well as sawdust in a polypropylene (PP) matrix. These materials and their results are not interchangeable, and the studies do not provide a universal consumer formula for furniture.
PVA wood glue may be suitable for an exploratory, non-structural sample, but the cited work does not show that a particular consumer glue will make durable or load-bearing furniture. A sample that holds together is not proof that it can safely support a person or other load.
What does published furniture research show?
A 2023 BioResources study by Kılıç and colleagues used furniture-factory waste sawdust in polypropylene composites. Researchers tested sawdust levels of 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, and 35% by weight, with either 0% or 3% maleated polypropylene (MAPP). They selected a formulation of 20% sawdust, 3% MAPP, and 77% PP for prototype furniture support legs.

The researchers made those prototypes using fabrication-scale injection molding, with extrusion also part of the study’s process. The result demonstrates a specific industrially processed composite—not that sawdust, ordinary glue, and a hand-built mold can reproduce a structural furniture part. The formulation is a study-specific finding, not a home mixing instruction.
Why the process and sawdust matter
Composite forming methods include compression molding, extrusion, resin transfer molding, thermoforming, and injection molding. The appropriate method depends on the intended shape and material properties. Feedstock matters, too: fine sanding dust and furniture-factory waste are different inputs, and results from one should not be assumed to apply to the other.

Can you use a sawdust composite for a chair or table?
The cited studies do not establish a tested DIY design for load-bearing furniture, nor a standardized consumer recipe. Do not treat a small molded sample or a research prototype as a tested chair, table, or support. Structural furniture needs evidence for the actual material, geometry, fabrication method, and loads involved.

Wood dust can become airborne during woodworking and furniture production, particularly where local exhaust ventilation is absent.
