Yes. Soldering wire that contains lead can expose you to lead when heated, and lead residue can also reach your mouth from contaminated hands or surfaces. Exposure does not mean poisoning is inevitable: the material, task, duration, and controls all matter. Lead fumes may be invisible and odorless, so you cannot judge exposure by sight or smell alone.
How soldering wire can expose you to lead
The lead source is solder that actually contains lead. Heating or soldering it can produce lead fumes that may be inhaled. Lead dust and residue can also contaminate tools, work surfaces, clothing, and hands, then be swallowed when contaminated hands or objects touch the mouth. NIOSH describes these inhalation and ingestion routes and warns that lead fumes and dust may not be noticeable: NIOSH guidance on lead exposure risks.
Not every soldering session causes poisoning, and not every soldering fume contains lead. Flux and other materials can present separate hazards depending on their composition and exposure conditions. Check the label and safety data sheet for the specific solder and flux you use; OSHA discusses both lead fume hazards in soldering and the potential hazards of flux compounds in its technical manual on welding, cutting, and brazing hazards.
Does lead solder give off fumes?
Lead-containing solder can create lead fumes when heated. Fumes may be invisible and have no detectable odor, so an apparently clear, smell-free work area does not establish that exposure is absent. OSHA identifies airborne lead fume hazards in soldering and brazing work, including work that is short-term or intermittent: OSHA interpretation on solder hazard labels.

How to reduce exposure when soldering
Use controls suited to the specific material and task. NIOSH recommends eliminating lead sources where possible, substituting lead-free materials where the application permits, and using local exhaust ventilation as an engineering control. Such controls need to be properly maintained and operated to work effectively. See NIOSH recommendations for employers.
- Capture fumes: Use local exhaust ventilation where provided. In confined work areas, OSHA describes portable local exhaust as a way to remove metal fumes and gases.
- Keep the area clean: Use wet cleaning methods or a HEPA-filtered vacuum for lead-contaminated dust. Avoid dry sweeping, which can put dust back into the air.
- Prevent hand-to-mouth transfer: Avoid touching your face during lead work. Do not eat, drink, or smoke in the work area, and wash with a product intended to remove lead after handling lead-containing materials.
These worker practices are outlined by NIOSH worker guidance. For construction or maintenance work, controls should reflect the actual site, work area, and materials rather than assuming that brief or occasional work is hazard-free.

Is lead-free solder safer?
Replacing lead-containing solder with lead-free solder removes that solder as a lead source, when the project and equipment allow the substitution. NIOSH specifically gives lead-free solder as an example of substituting away from a lead source. That does not mean all risks disappear: flux may still pose a hazard, and suitable ventilation and safe handling remain important. Follow the label and safety data sheet for the particular product.
There is no single lead-free alloy or product established here as right for every job. Compare the project specification, the alloy and flux listed for the product, the equipment and process, and the exposure controls available. For drinking-water plumbing, EPA recommends lead-free solder; that plumbing guidance is specific to work on drinking-water systems and should not be treated as a universal rule for every soldering application. See the EPA guide to lead in the home.

What workplace measurements do—and do not—show
A NIOSH-hosted 2001 evaluation of wave-soldering operations in circuit-board manufacturing reported sampled breathing-zone and area air results below the evaluation criteria used in that study. The same evaluation found surface wipes with lead results as high as 1,700 micrograms per wipe and a hand wipe result of 52 micrograms per wipe after a worker deep-cleaned a solder pot and washed normally. The report concluded that ingestion remained possible because lead was present on surfaces, and it recommended improved housekeeping, hygiene, personal protective equipment, and engineering controls: NIOSH-hosted 2001 exposure evaluation.
Those measurements describe one manufacturing evaluation, not typical exposure for a home hobbyist, a current population statistic, or a poisoning threshold. The available evidence does not quantify the chance that an individual hobbyist will be poisoned by soldering.
