Usually not in climates with cold winters. Snake plants are tropical, and the conservative guidance is to keep them outside only while nighttime temperatures stay above 55°F. Bring a potted plant indoors before colder nights or frost; USDA Zones 10–12 are listed as its winter-hardiness range, but that is not a guarantee for every site or exposure.
When is it warm enough to leave a snake plant outside?
Mississippi State University Extension recommends moving Sansevieria outdoors only once temperatures are consistently warm and nighttime lows stay above 55°F. It is a practical care guideline, not a measured survival threshold. The University of Connecticut also advises avoiding temperatures below 55°F, while North Carolina State Extension says the plant tolerates cool temperatures around 50°F. Those recommendations differ, and none supports leaving a snake plant exposed to frost or freezing conditions.
UF/IFAS lists Sansevieria trifasciata as winter hardy in USDA Zones 10–12. A hardiness zone describes a broad climate range; it does not account for every yard’s exposure, a sudden cold snap, or a plant’s growing conditions. If frost or freezing weather is forecast, move a container-grown plant indoors rather than relying on the lower temperature guidance.
Should you bring a potted snake plant inside for winter?
Yes, if your area has cold nights. A container makes it possible to move the plant to shelter before temperatures fall. Take it inside when nighttime lows are expected to drop below the conservative 55°F guideline, and do not wait for frost. The advice to place snake plants outdoors applies to warm-weather conditions, not to winter exposure in colder climates.

How should you care for it indoors during winter?
Water less as growth slows
Let the potting mix dry between waterings and avoid keeping it soggy. Illinois Extension advises giving only enough winter water to prevent the foliage from shriveling; UF/IFAS also recommends significantly reducing watering from fall to late winter.

Keep the plant sheltered
Move the pot to a warm indoor location before cold weather arrives. General advice about covering tender garden plants does not establish that frost cloth will protect a snake plant sufficiently through winter, so do not treat a cover as a substitute for bringing it inside.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the plant’s names and hardiness range mean
Snake plant is commonly sold under the name Sansevieria trifasciata. North Carolina State Extension uses Dracaena trifasciata as the current name and lists Sansevieria trifasciata as a former name, so either may appear on plant labels and care information. UF/IFAS’s Zones 10–12 rating is useful climate guidance, not a promise that every plant will tolerate every winter condition within those zones.
