Sometimes—but only if your treadmill’s manual allows it. WD-40 recommends WD-40 Specialist Silicone for some fitness-machine maintenance, but treadmill makers specify different lubricants and some decks require no lubricant at all. Check your exact model’s instructions before applying anything; if they permit lubrication, use the specified product and apply it only where directed, never to the belt’s top running surface.
Why the treadmill manual decides
“Silicone” on a product label is not enough to establish that it is suitable for your treadmill. WD-40’s fitness-maintenance guidance names WD-40 Specialist Silicone or the treadmill maker’s recommended lubricant and says to apply it underneath the belt. But that is general product-company advice, not a compatibility guarantee for every treadmill.
Manufacturers may specify 100% silicone oil, a different lubricant, or no added lubricant. For example, Horizon’s guidance for applicable silicone-surface models calls for 100% silicone lubricant, while its waxed-deck and belt guidance says those surfaces are maintenance-free. A Nautilus treadmill manual warns against using a degreaser such as WD-40 because it could seriously affect performance. That warning applies to the equipment covered by that manual; it should not be generalized to every WD-40-branded product or treadmill. Read the manual for your exact model and follow it over general advice.
WD-40’s treadmill advice is not consistent across its articles
WD-40’s fitness-machine article recommends Specialist Silicone or the manufacturer-recommended lubricant. A separate WD-40 exercise-equipment article describes Specialist Dry Lube as a treadmill-belt maintenance product. Because the two recommendations differ, do not choose between them by guesswork. If your treadmill maker does not approve the product or the manual is unclear, contact the manufacturer or use only a lubricant it identifies as compatible.

How to check whether lubrication is appropriate
- Find the model-specific maintenance instructions. Check the treadmill manual or the maker’s support page for the exact model. Look for the lubricant type, whether the deck is lubricated or maintenance-free, and the location, amount, and interval for application.
- Match the product and method to those instructions. “Silicone” may mean a specified 100% silicone oil, not a spray. Use WD-40 Specialist Silicone only if your treadmill’s instructions permit it.
- Do not lubricate a maintenance-free deck. Horizon says not to add lubricant to the waxed surfaces covered by its guidance. Do not assume another model has the same deck design.
- Ask the treadmill maker if the instructions do not settle the question. Do not apply a product simply because it is marketed for fitness equipment.
If your manual permits lubrication
Use the model’s own procedure, quantity, and schedule. The following is WD-40’s general procedure, not a substitute for model-specific directions: unplug the treadmill, consult the manual for how to loosen or lift the belt, and apply the permitted lubricant underneath the belt on both sides. Keep it off the top running surface. WD-40 says to clean accidental spills from that surface with soap and water, run the machine slowly to spread the lubricant, and wipe away excess. If your treadmill’s manual gives different steps, follow those instead.
Horizon’s March 2026 guidance illustrates why amounts and schedules should not be borrowed across brands or models. For the applicable machines in its silicone-surface instructions, Horizon specifies lubrication every three months or 150 miles and describes 20 ml per application, with no more than 30 ml at one time in that procedure. These are Horizon-specific instructions, not general treadmill rules. Its separate guidance says waxed decks and belts should have nothing added.

What is not established about WD-40 Specialist Silicone
No independent comparative test was identified measuring WD-40 Specialist Silicone against dedicated treadmill lubricant for belt performance, wear, or service life. The available recommendations establish what WD-40 and individual treadmill makers advise for their respective products or machines; they do not establish universal compatibility. NordicTrack UK likewise advises using suitable silicone-based treadmill lubricant and warns against oils or grease intended for other purposes, underscoring that the model maker’s directions matter.
