A report published by Scienmag on October 10, 2026, describes laboratory tests of limestone calcined clay cement (LC3) mortar containing pre-wetted shale ceramsite. It reports gains in compressive strength and lower water-absorption and electric-flux measurements for some pre-wetted mixes. But the available account does not establish that the material is lightweight, chloride-proof, or ready for use in construction: it describes mortar tests, not field performance, and says direct, longer-term chloride testing is still needed.
What was studied
Scienmag attributes the study to Qiaoyun Wu, Zhifeng Xu, Xuyong Chen, and Shukai Cheng. It gives the paper title as “Synergistic internal curing and phase assembly in limestone calcined clay cement mortar incorporating pre-wetted shale ceramsite: Mechanical properties, chloride resistance, and pore structure refinement,” and identifies it as an article in Case Studies in Construction Materials, volume 25, article e06607, DOI 10.1016/j.cscm.2026.e06607. These publication details come from Scienmag’s secondary account and have not been independently confirmed against the journal record or paper.

The account says the researchers compared LC3 mortar containing shale ceramsite aggregate in dry and pre-wetted conditions. It describes the pre-wetted aggregate as being brought to a saturated surface-dry condition, with its pre-wetting water deducted from the mixing water to maintain an effective water-to-binder ratio of 0.4. The ceramsite proportion varied. Those methods are also reported by Scienmag rather than verified from the primary paper.

In this case, however, the available account does not provide enough primary-source detail to assess the mechanism, reproduce the mixes, or establish how the results depend on aggregate dosage and other test conditions.

What results did the report give?
The figures below are claims in Scienmag’s October 10, 2026 report; they have not been checked against the study’s original tables or figures. They should be read as reported laboratory results, not as independently confirmed performance specifications.
| Reported result | What the account says | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Compressive strength | The best pre-wetted formulation had a 10.8% gain at 28 days compared with its dry-aggregate counterpart. | A comparison within the reported formulations, not a general strength increase for LC3 mortar. |
| Capillary water absorption | Pre-wetted mixtures had 64–67% lower absorption over 150 hours than dry counterparts. | A reported laboratory absorption comparison; it does not by itself establish service life or watertightness in a structure. |
| Electric flux | Pre-wetted mixes showed 59–80% lower electric flux; the best mix was reportedly below 100 coulombs. | A proxy measurement in the account, not direct proof of long-term resistance to chloride ingress. |
| Pore structure | A highlighted pre-wetted mix reportedly had a 47.2% gel-pore fraction and 3.1% macroporosity. | The account does not provide enough primary data here to evaluate the measurement method or compare it with other mixes. |
Scienmag also says flexural strength declined as ceramsite content rose, but the account does not expose a primary figure or table for that finding. It is a potentially important trade-off: a compressive-strength gain does not establish that every relevant mechanical property improved.

Why “chloride-proof” overstates the evidence
The report describes electric-flux testing as a proxy and says that longer-term chloride migration and diffusion testing remains necessary. Lower electric flux is therefore not equivalent to demonstrated resistance over years of exposure, and it cannot support a claim that the mortar is “chloride-proof.” The account also identifies carbonation, freeze-thaw, and sulfate resistance as topics needing further study.
Likewise, the headline’s “lightweight” description is not established by the figures available in the account. It reports pore fractions, but does not provide a verified density result or a comparable density benchmark. Porosity figures alone cannot establish the finished material’s weight or its suitability where weight is a design constraint.

What builders and specifiers can conclude
The reported findings make pre-wetted shale ceramsite a research option worth investigating for LC3 mortar, particularly because the account describes improved compressive strength and lower absorption and electric-flux readings in some mixes. They do not qualify a recipe for structural concrete or demonstrate that it can be specified for bridges, marine structures, or other chloride-exposed projects.
- Do not treat the reported percentages as design values. The account is secondary reporting, and the underlying paper and test details have not been verified here.
- Do not infer field readiness. The described work concerns laboratory mortar; the account does not establish field performance, code approval, or a commercial ready-mix product.
- Require project-specific validation. Any practical assessment would need the primary methods and data, comparable mixes at controlled effective water-to-binder ratio and aggregate dosage, density and mechanical results, and direct chloride migration or diffusion testing relevant to the intended exposure.
Scienmag’s account is useful as a report of a promising laboratory direction, not as an engineering specification. Until primary results and broader durability evidence are available, the defensible conclusion is that pre-wetted ceramsite may improve selected measured properties in LC3 mortar formulations—not that it produces proven lightweight, chloride-proof concrete.
