Can Eufy Cameras See Through Windows? What Works—and What Doesn’t

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes, a Eufy camera may show and record a usable daytime view through ordinary window glass. But Eufy says motion detection behind glass is unreliable, reflections can undermine AI detection, and infrared night vision often reflects back into the lens. For dependable outdoor alerts—especially after dark—mount a suitable outdoor camera outside.

What works through a window?

Function What to expect
Daytime live view Often possible through clear glass, but glare, reflections, window coatings and lighting affect the picture.
Daytime recording May capture a usable scene, but a recording only exists if the camera is set to record; a live view alone does not establish that outdoor events will trigger recordings.
Outdoor motion alerts Not reliable with PIR-based cameras: Eufy says glass inhibits the infrared signal their sensors use.
AI or person detection May identify something in the video, but Eufy warns reflections can affect detection accuracy on several Indoor Cam models.
Infrared night vision Usually impaired because infrared light can reflect from the window into the lens.
Weather protection An indoor camera must stay indoors; an outdoor-rated camera belongs at an installation location permitted by its instructions.

Eufy’s guidance is about reliability, not an absolute claim that no camera can ever register movement through glass. Its support documentation says outdoor motion detection behind glass is unreliable and recommends placing outdoor cameras outside when the goal is to detect outdoor movement. Eufy’s explanation of motion detection behind windows describes the limitation for its eufyCam, SoloCam, IndoorCam and OutdoorCam families.

Why motion detection is unreliable behind glass

Many Eufy cameras use passive infrared (PIR) sensors. In plain terms, a PIR sensor looks for changes in infrared radiation associated with a warm object moving across its view. Window glass inhibits the infrared signal reaching the sensor, so someone walking outside may not trigger an alert or event recording. Movement inside the room, on the camera’s side of the pane, may still trigger it. That is why the result can seem intermittent rather than completely nonfunctional.

Eufy’s support article updated December 10, 2025 lists affected product families and models, including Indoor Cam S350, Indoor Cam 2K, Indoor Cam 2K Pan & Tilt, SoloCam C210, Indoor Cam C220 and eufyCam models. A particular model’s features or firmware may differ, but a successful live view should not be treated as proof that its PIR sensor can reliably detect outside movement through a window.

Can an indoor Eufy camera record what is outside?

Visible light can pass through ordinary clear glass, so a camera may show the outdoors in its app and record it during daylight. The image depends on the actual window and room: indoor lights can reflect in the pane, strong daylight can backlight the scene, and dirt, condensation or water spots can soften the picture. Double- or triple-pane glass may add reflections; tinted, mirrored, privacy or some Low-E glass can reduce visible-light transmission. Screens may reduce sharpness or create mesh patterns and moiré.

Distance and angle matter. A camera set well back from the pane is more likely to capture reflections of the room. Positioning it close to the glass and aiming as squarely through the pane as practical can help, though the camera should not be pressed tightly against glass unless its mounting design supports that. Window coatings can also affect wireless signal strength in some installations; test the actual location rather than assuming a universal result.

For an indoor-only option, Eufy describes its Indoor Cam E220 as intended for indoor use, not outdoor or weather-exposed installation. Its listed video and night-vision features do not mean those features will perform well through glass.

Does Eufy night vision work through glass?

Usually, it is the weakest part of this arrangement. Infrared LEDs on the camera illuminate the scene, but when the camera is indoors the light strikes the window and can bounce back toward the lens. That can produce a bright gray or white wash, flare, a mirror-like view of the room, or so little exterior detail that the footage is unusable. Multi-pane windows may add reflections, and interior lights near the camera can make glare worse. Eufy manuals warn that infrared reflection negatively affects night-vision performance; see the Eufy camera manual.

Can turning off infrared help?

If a particular model provides a night-vision, infrared or illumination control, disabling it may reduce the reflection. The camera then needs visible light outside—such as a porch light, street lighting or another suitable exterior light—to show the scene after dark. Controls vary by model and firmware, so check that camera’s settings and documentation rather than relying on a universal app path. Turning off infrared does not restore PIR motion detection through glass, and insufficient exterior light can leave the nighttime image dark.

If nighttime monitoring is important, a camera behind glass is usually the wrong installation. Some owners describe disabling infrared and relying on outdoor lighting, but that is an anecdotal workaround, not a guaranteed result.

How to improve a behind-window setup

  1. Place the camera close to the pane where practical, without forcing it against the glass or blocking ventilation.
  2. Aim as close to perpendicular to the window as the view allows; avoid pointing toward bright indoor lamps or reflective surfaces.
  3. Clean both sides of the glass and, if present, the screen. Check for condensation and water spots.
  4. Reduce nearby interior light at night. A dark cloth or light-blocking enclosure around the camera’s sides and rear may limit reflections, but do not obstruct ventilation or create heat buildup.
  5. If the camera supports it, test with infrared illumination disabled and adequate exterior lighting available.
  6. Check the picture and recordings in bright daylight, at dusk and in darkness, with indoor lights both on and off. Also check conditions such as rain if they affect the view through that window.
  7. Test alerts separately: have someone walk through the outdoor area and confirm whether the camera actually notifies you or records an event. Do not infer detection performance from live video.

Which Eufy camera makes sense?

For a temporary daytime view from indoors

An indoor camera such as the E220 may be practical when the goal is checking whether a porch or driveway is occupied, and exterior mounting is not possible. The trade-off is that outdoor alerts through glass are not dependable, and the camera must remain protected indoors.

For a more capable indoor camera

The Indoor Cam S350 is an indoor product option, not a fix for the window limitation. A higher-resolution camera or more advanced detection does not remove reflections or make PIR sensing through glass reliable. Eufy’s model-specific Indoor Cam guidance warns that reflections can affect AI-detection accuracy on several models: Indoor Cam 2K FAQ, Indoor Cam 2K Pan & Tilt FAQ and Indoor Cam Mini 2K FAQ.

For outdoor alerts or nighttime security

Choose an outdoor-rated camera designed for the exposure and mounting location, then install it outside according to its instructions. Eufy’s outdoor camera listings are a starting point; verify the exact model’s weather rating, power arrangement and detection features before buying. A battery-powered outdoor camera does not solve the glass problem: its outdoor PIR sensor may still miss movement through the pane, and keeping it inside wastes its intended placement and weather protection.

What should renters consider?

If permanent exterior mounting is not allowed, an indoor camera aimed through a window can still provide daytime situational awareness, provided missed alerts are acceptable. Ask the landlord or building management whether removable mounting or an approved doorway installation is allowed. A camera under a protected balcony or overhang is only appropriate if the specific product’s installation requirements are met. Check local privacy and building rules before recording shared hallways, sidewalks or neighboring property.

When is a window-facing camera the wrong choice?

  • Outdoor motion alerts need to be dependable, especially for a gate, driveway, yard or walkway.
  • The area must be monitored after dark and exterior lighting is not adequate.
  • A missed event would create an unacceptable security gap.
  • The window is highly reflective, tinted, mirrored, screened or otherwise degrades the actual view.

In those cases, an outdoor-mounted camera is the more suitable approach. A video doorbell can suit an entry point, while a wired outdoor system may fit a permanent installation where running cable is practical. Match the product to the location and check permissions before mounting.
