A properly functioning microwave used according to its manufacturer’s instructions is not generally expected to blow up. But “explosion” can describe several different hazards: sparks inside the oven, a fire, a superheated liquid erupting, or a sealed container failing under pressure. If you see sparks or the oven behaves abnormally, stop it; if its door is damaged or it runs with the door open, stop using it.

What people mean when they say a microwave “blew up”

The appliance and the food or container inside it pose different risks. A microwave can be damaged by arcing or fire, while hot liquid can erupt and a sealed container can release pressure suddenly. These events do not all mean the oven itself exploded.

  • Sparks: Electrical arcing inside the oven, often involving metal or metallic decoration.
  • Liquid eruption: Superheated water or another liquid can suddenly boil over when disturbed, causing scalds.
  • Container failure: Steam or pressure can force a lid or container apart if it is sealed or its vent is blocked.
  • Appliance damage: Arcing or fire can damage the oven or an item inside it.

The FDA says ovens that meet its safety standard and are used according to their manufacturers’ instructions are safe for use. That is not a guarantee against misuse, damaged equipment, or burns from hot contents. FDA microwave oven safety guidance

Why a microwave may spark

USDA FSIS describes arcing as sparks inside the oven caused when microwaves react with metallic materials. Metal utensils, foil, gold-colored dish trim, and twist ties can cause arcing or uneven heating. Some foods, including raw carrots and hot dogs, can also be a source of sparks. Prolonged arcing may damage the oven or utensil; USDA says arcing caught immediately should not damage the oven. USDA FSIS microwave ovens and food safety

  1. Turn the oven off immediately when you see sparks. Do not continue the cycle to see whether they stop.
  2. Wait until it is safe to open the door, then remove the item that may be causing the arcing.
  3. Use cookware labeled for microwave use, or choose another cooking method. Check your specific oven’s manual before using foil or any other metal; some models allow limited uses.
  4. If sparking continues without an obvious removable cause, or the oven appears damaged, stop using it and contact the manufacturer.

Sparks alone do not establish that microwave radiation is leaking. FDA guidance focuses on following the instructions and stopping use if the door or its safety behavior is abnormal.

Can water or food explode in the microwave?

Water can become hotter than its usual boiling temperature without visibly boiling. Moving the vessel or adding an ingredient can trigger sudden boiling and a violent eruption. USDA describes this as very unlikely but possible; the danger is a burn or scald from the liquid, not the microwave appliance exploding. USDA FSIS microwave ovens and food safety

These precautions reduce risk but cannot guarantee that a liquid will not erupt.

Why covers and sealed containers can fail

Heating food produces steam. Loosen or vent covers and wraps so steam can escape, and use cookware labeled for microwave use. Do not reuse a container that has warped or melted during heating. USDA FSIS microwave ovens and food safety

A 1992 CPSC recall notice documented a specific product hazard: a Micro-Dome food preserver could pressurize and its top could blow off if its vent stem or safety release became plugged. The notice also warned of failure during or after removal, or after impact or damage. This is a historical example involving one pressurized container, not evidence that ordinary microwave ovens routinely explode. CPSC 1992 Micro-Dome recall notice

When to stop using the microwave

Stop using the oven if its door is bent or damaged, does not close firmly, or the oven continues operating with the door open. Contact the manufacturer about damage to the door, hinges, latches, or seals. These are different warning signs from a brief spark caused by an item inside the oven, and they warrant stopping use rather than testing the appliance again. FDA microwave oven safety guidance

FDA explains that microwave ovens do not make food radioactive. Its safety guidance notes a federal leakage limit of 5 milliwatts per square centimeter measured about 2 inches from the oven surface, and required interlocks that stop microwave production when the latch is released or the door is opened. These are regulatory specifications, not a measure of how often ovens fail. A damaged door or abnormal interlock behavior should be addressed by discontinuing use and contacting the manufacturer.
