Yes, a gasoline generator may be made to run on natural gas with an improvised hose-and-valve arrangement, but that does not make the setup safe or approved. Hackaday’s 2021 report describes gas being fed into the engine intake and warns that fuel may keep flowing after a stall or shutdown. Use a generator designed for natural gas and have its supply installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions and local requirements.
What the field-expedient tip describes
In a March 3, 2021 report, Tom Nardi of Hackaday described a setup in which a hose was attached to a generator’s air-filter box and a valve was manually adjusted while the engine was cranked. The article characterized it as an unsafe, improvised hack—not a manufacturer-approved conversion procedure. It also noted that the arrangement may conflict with generators that automatically vary engine speed as electrical loads change.
The critical failure mode is straightforward: the valve is not automatically tied to engine operation. If the engine stalls, or the operator leaves the valve open, natural gas can continue to flow. Hackaday’s report is historical reporting, not an independent safety test or proof of compatibility with any particular generator.
Can a portable generator run on natural gas?
Some generators are designed for natural gas; an ordinary gasoline model should not be assumed to be compatible. For example, Champion lists model 201438 as a tri-fuel portable generator rated by the manufacturer at 10,000 watts and capable of using natural gas, propane, or gasoline. Champion says the model includes a 25-foot natural-gas hose kit. This is one product example, not a recommendation for every job or a substitute for checking current specifications and instructions.

- Uses existing port in carburetor for the natural gas inlet. No permanent modification required, retain the ability to run gasoline
- To switch back to propane, re-connect the stock propane hose
- APPLICATION: LOW PRESSURE NATURAL GAS CONVERSION Compatible with DUROMAX XP12000EH
- Required inlet pressure 9-13.8"wc
- Package includes: 1PCS Natural Gas Conversion Kit as Picture shows
When comparing equipment, check the manufacturer-approved fuels and the rated output on the fuel you intend to use. Also verify the manual’s fuel-system requirements, compatible hose and fittings, allowable inlet pressure, installation instructions, warranty terms, and any protective features such as carbon-monoxide shutoff. Those details vary by model; the examples cited here do not establish a side-by-side performance comparison.
Why an improvised gas connection is unsafe
A natural-gas supply is not simply a matter of attaching a hose. Pressure limits, compatible connections, installation requirements, and the generator’s own controls all matter. ANSI/PGMA G300-2023 addresses natural-gas supply connection instructions and input-pressure limits, and calls for installation by a licensed contractor, local utility, or equivalent. Follow the requirements applicable to the specific generator, supply, and location rather than adapting a workaround.

- No automatic shutoff in the reported arrangement: gas can continue flowing if the engine stops and the manual valve is left open.
- Unestablished compatibility: the report does not show that the hack is approved for any particular generator or fuel supply.
- Possible engine-control conflict: automatic speed changes under varying electrical loads may not work as intended with the improvised fuel arrangement.
Carbon monoxide remains a fatal hazard
Changing the fuel does not eliminate exhaust danger. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that carbon monoxide from a generator can kill within minutes. Portable generators must be operated outdoors, well away from windows, doors, vents, and other openings; direct exhaust away from occupied structures. Follow the placement and clearance instructions in the generator manual and applicable safety requirements.
The CPSC reports that more than 200 people in the United States die each year from accidental, non-fire-related carbon-monoxide poisoning associated with consumer products, with more than 100 of those deaths linked to portable generators. The cited page does not specify a reporting year, so these figures should not be read as a count for a particular year.

- 【Conversion Kit for Petrol Generators】
- - Allows petrol generators with a power range of 2-5KW to be converted for use with methane CNG or propane for LPG gas, while still retaining the option to use gas.
- - Includes a pressure regulator and a gas carburetor, ensuring a safe and stable gas supply to the engine. The pressure regulator shuts off the gas supply when the generator stops, prevents any gas from entering the engine.
- - The power output of the generator remains unaffected after the conversion. The power performance depends on both the quality of the generator and the gas being used (propane or methane).
- - TriFuels capability: Supports gas, low pressure propane for LPG gas, and methane CNG gas, allowing the use of type of gas at a time.

- Gas Pressure Requirements and Installation: The gas must be pressure regulated natural gas (PNG or CNG) between 0.29 or 0.37 psi and LPG needs to be 0.40 or 0.55 psi. Natural gas generally has a regulator before entering the building. For LP gas a regulator must be installed on the tank. Basic mechanical ability is needed as these units only come with basic operation instructions
What to do instead
- Choose equipment rated for the intended fuel. Confirm the exact model’s approved fuels and output on natural gas in the manufacturer’s current documentation.
- Use the specified supply components. Check required hose, fittings, inlet-pressure limits, and connection instructions in the model manual; do not infer compatibility from appearance or from another model.
- Arrange qualified installation. Have the natural-gas connection handled by a licensed contractor, local utility, or equivalent qualified provider, and confirm local requirements.
- Set up the generator safely. Operate it outdoors, position it away from openings, and direct exhaust away from occupied areas as the manual and applicable instructions require.
