A camp kitchen woodworking plan should fit the stove, cookware and vehicle you actually use—not an assumed standard size. The WOOD Store’s Camp Kitchen Woodworking Plan builds a large box with a stowable windscreen, a stacking base, fold-out prep surfaces and a paper-towel holder. If that design is too large or its layout does not suit your gear, compact chuck boxes, modular cabinet-and-table systems and customizable free plans offer different trade-offs.
What the WOOD Store camp kitchen plan builds
The WOOD Store plan is for a large storage box intended to carry campground cooking gear and serve as a campsite cooking station. Its windscreen stows inside for transport, the base stacks on the box to make hauling more compact, and the fold-out lids create prep space. It also includes a paper-towel holder for cleanup. The plan appeared in WOOD Issue 242 in October 2016; the retailer page says it was updated March 6, 2025. See the WOOD Store plan listing; the related listing identifies product code GR-01128 (product listing).
Compare camp kitchen plan formats
These plans solve the same broad problem—organizing cooking equipment at camp—but differ in footprint, setup and how much of the build is specified. Dimensions listed for one design are not universal requirements.
| Plan format | Layout and dimensions | What the listing or guide provides | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| WOOD Store Camp Kitchen | Large box; stowable windscreen, stackable base and fold-out lids. Dimensions are not stated in the WOOD Store listing. | Plan featured in WOOD Issue 242, October 2016; listing updated March 6, 2025. | Builders who want an integrated storage box and campsite work surface. |
| Lee Valley U-Bild chuck box | Completed box listed at 30 × 19 × 17 inches. | Instructions, in-progress photographs, exploded diagrams, materials lists and cutting schedules (Lee Valley plan listing). | Those seeking a defined portable cabinet and detailed visual and cutting guidance. |
| Hansen Wheel and Wagon Shop modular system | Upper cabinets, lower cabinets and a trestle table; the listing gives unit configurations and dimensions. | A 20-page booklet with 24 illustrations (Hansen plan listing). | Those who prefer a modular setup rather than one transport box. |
| Customizable or free build | Size and layout can be adapted to the builder’s stove and equipment. | REI provides a DIY process; Tom Builds Stuff describes a free portable chuck-box plan (REI guide; Tom Builds Stuff plan). | Those who want to tailor storage to their own gear and are comfortable making design decisions. |
Choose by storage, transport and setup
Start with the equipment you need to carry, then consider how the unit will travel and work at camp. A large box can combine storage and prep space, but its packed footprint and loaded weight matter if it must fit a crowded vehicle or be carried any distance. A compact chuck box limits capacity in exchange for a more defined cabinet. A modular arrangement separates storage from the table, which can make setup more flexible but means managing multiple pieces.

Compare the build information, not just the finished appearance
Before choosing a booklet or free plan, check whether it supplies dimensions, a cut list, a materials list, assembly instructions and diagrams. Lee Valley explicitly lists instructions, process photographs, exploded diagrams, materials lists and cutting schedules. Hansen lists a 20-page booklet and 24 illustrations. For a free or customizable design, confirm that you can determine the missing dimensions and cuts before buying materials.
Size a camp kitchen around your stove and cookware
Measure the gear before fixing the box dimensions or shelf positions. REI’s May 5, 2021 guide recommends measuring the stove with its fuel bottle attached, allowing clearance for the stove lid to open, and measuring tall items to establish shelf spacing (REI’s camp kitchen guide).

- Lay out the gear. Group the stove, fuel, cookware, utensils and supplies you intend to store. Decide which items need to be accessible during cooking and which can sit in less convenient compartments.
- Measure the stove in use-ready configuration. Include the attached fuel bottle, and leave room for the lid to open. A box that fits the stove only after the fuel is removed may not suit your intended setup.
- Measure tall items before setting shelves. Check the height of bottles and cookware and allow space to lift them out, not just to fit them in place.
- Check access and work surfaces. Consider where the stove will sit when operating and whether open doors, fold-out lids or the windscreen interfere with nearby storage or prep space.
- Test packed fit in the vehicle. Account for the box’s outside dimensions and how it will be loaded alongside other camping equipment.
Plan materials, hardware and tools
REI’s design uses a 4 × 8 foot sheet of ½-inch plywood, four sets of hinges, two latches, two magnetic closures, wood glue, screws and a lid prop. Its listed tools and equipment include a screwdriver, tape measure, drill and small bit, pencils, square, saw, small handsaw and safety glasses (REI guide). These are examples for REI’s design, not a universal shopping list: another plan may call for different dimensions, hardware or materials.

- One item includes a 18L camping storage bag, a shoulder strap, a US flag patch and a lemubeane logo hook. Made of 600D nylon, durable and water-resistant, these camping organizers are meant to last for years even for the most rugged users. Three colors to choose from: black, khaki & Army Green.
- Full size: 14.2" x 9.6" x 8.3" (folded size: 14.2" x 9.8" x 4.4"), Volume: 18L. Please note it is not a large‑sized bag. There are many MOLLE trims and slots around the bag for carrying and organizing hand tools, flashlights, camping mugs and bowls. There are two mesh pockets on each side of the bag. The nylon bag itself is a big compartment and it is foldable. You can add the two separating pads to the hook-and-loop lining to create three small compartments as you like, and there is a big zipper mesh pocket on the top of the bag.
- The bottom of our camping bag is made of waterproof fabric to isolate moisture and make the bag easy to clean. When the bag is set up, you can carry it with the two handles on the top or carry it with the breathable shoulder strap. The two short sides and the two dividers are embedded with hard boards to keep solid shape. Each side of the bag is embedded in pearl cotton to protect your items from impacts. There is an area to add the patches you like and we offer a US flag patch & a lemubeane logo.
- Our camping storage bag is perfect for storing camping cookware such as pans, stoves, a gas cylinder, tableware, and other items like clothes, shoes, snacks, books, and so on. You can also leave it in your trunk as a trunk organizer and fold it to save space when you don't need it. It is a versatile storage bag for your camping, hiking, picnic, travelling and daily use.
- Use the chosen plan’s own cut list and materials schedule when available; do not buy plywood based on another design’s bill of materials.
- Check that the specified hinges, latches and lid supports suit the doors and fold-out surfaces in your design.
- Gather measuring, cutting and drilling equipment appropriate to the plan, and use safety glasses during cutting and assembly.
Which plan should you choose?
- Choose the WOOD Store plan if you want a large, integrated box with a stowable windscreen, stackable base, fold-out prep space and paper-towel holder.
- Choose the Lee Valley U-Bild plan if a 30 × 19 × 17-inch cabinet suits your gear and you value listed cutting schedules, diagrams and process photographs.
- Consider Hansen’s modular system if separate cabinets and a trestle table better match your campsite setup than one box.
- Use a customizable or free plan if your stove or cookware needs an unusual layout and you are willing to work out dimensions and cuts that the guide does not specify.
