The Pursat–Pray Svay section of Cambodia’s National Road No. 5 Improvement Project received the Construction and Development Project Category award in the 9th Japan Construction International Award. The recognized contract package widened 47 km to four lanes, with construction running from April 2019 to September 2022.
What is Cambodia’s National Road No. 5?
National Road No. 5 connects Phnom Penh with the Thai border and forms part of the Southern Economic Corridor, according to the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Its improvement is being delivered through multiple projects and contracts, rather than one continuous award-winning job. JICA’s 2023 project information and its 2024 announcement describe work on other sections of the route.
Which section won the award?
The awardee was the National Road No.5 Improvement Project Middle Section Contract Package 2 (Pursat–Pray Svay), Cambodia. The Japan Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) lists Obayashi Corporation, Katahira & Engineers International, and Oriental Consultants Global Co., Ltd. in connection with the award. This recognition applies to that specific package, not to every National Road No. 5 improvement project. MLIT’s 9th award project page identifies the package and its participants.
What did the Pursat–Pray Svay package involve?
MLIT describes a 47-km section widened to four lanes, with road and bridge works. The client was Cambodia’s Ministry of Public Works and Transport; Obayashi was the contractor, and the relevant Pursat and Battambang public works and transport departments were responsible for operations and maintenance. MLIT’s project description highlights features evaluated by the award, including:

How does this package fit into the wider road improvement program?
The Pursat–Pray Svay award package should not be conflated with other National Road No. 5 projects. JICA’s 2023 loan project covers Prek Kdam–Thlea Ma’am, while its 2024 announcement describes works on Thlea Ma’am–Battambang and Sri Sophorn–Poipet. Those projects have separate scopes, agreements, and timelines; their lengths, funding, and planned works are not part of the award-winning 47-km package.
