Burpee sells seeds for vegetables, flowers, fruit and herbs, along with plants and gardening supplies. To choose a variety and start it successfully, check its packet directions against your growing space and local frost date; Burpee’s indoor-starting advice is useful, but timing and growing needs vary by seed and location.
What are Burpee seeds?
Burpee is a seed company whose official history traces its business to W. Atlee Burpee, who began a mail-order poultry and livestock business in 1876 and started offering seeds in 1877. The company says Fordhook Farm, purchased in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, in 1888, became a breeding and trial site; it also credits itself with introducing ‘Iceberg’ lettuce in 1894. These dates and milestones are from Burpee’s account of its history.
Today, Burpee’s catalog includes vegetable, flower, fruit and herb seeds, as well as live plants and gardening supplies. Its broader assortment can change with the season and stock. The company also offers larger-pack seeds for farming customers, including Burpee-bred, Fordhook Farm, novel and some organic varieties. Burpee describes Fordhook Farm as a 60-acre test farm in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, in its Farmers Market FAQ.
Does Burpee sell GMO seeds?
Burpee says it has never bred or sold GMO seeds and does not intend to do so. That is the company’s own statement in its FAQ, rather than an independent assessment of every seed variety or the seed industry as a whole.

How do you choose a Burpee variety?
Start with the conditions you can provide and what you want to harvest or grow. Burpee’s seed-starting basics recommends accounting for available space, mature plant size and sunlight. It says many vegetables and flowering plants need at least six hours of full sun daily; individual varieties can have different requirements, so use the packet and variety listing for specifics.
- Space: Check the mature size and spacing so plants will fit the bed, container or other growing area.
- Sun: Compare the site’s direct sunlight with the variety’s stated needs.
- Purpose: Choose based on whether you want food, cut flowers, ornamental color or another use, and whether the variety suits your growing season.
- Availability: Confirm current stock and any shipping limits on the specific product page before ordering.
When should you start Burpee seeds indoors?
Use the seed packet and your location’s average last frost date, not a single calendar date for every seed. Burpee says packet directions provide information such as when to start, planting depth, expected emergence and thinning. Its example of starting seeds six to eight weeks before a May 1 last frost is only an illustration of counting backward; it is not a universal schedule. Starting indoors can give slow-growing plants more time to mature before frost, but starting too early may leave seedlings weak and leggy, according to Burpee’s seed-starting basics page, published May 21, 2021. Conditions such as local weather and the growing space matter, so adjust to the packet’s crop-specific instructions rather than treating the example as a guarantee.
How do you start seeds indoors?
Burpee’s indoor-starting instructions call for small pots or cells, seed-starting soil or coir, evenly moist soil and adequate light. Seedlings are fragile, so small containers help keep the growing setup manageable. Soil should be moist, not waterlogged.

- Read the packet. Check the recommended start date, sowing depth and any crop-specific guidance.
- Prepare containers. Use small pots or cells and seed-starting soil or coir.
- Sow and water. Plant at the specified depth and keep the medium evenly moist rather than wet.
- Provide light. Use a full-sun window if it supplies enough direct sun. If it does not, Burpee recommends supplemental artificial light; its guide suggests 16 hours of light and 8 hours of dark. Follow the directions for your light equipment and the seed packet.
What should you look for on a seed packet?
Burpee says packets include key planting and emergence details. Before sowing, look for the timing guidance, planting depth, expected time to emergence and thinning directions. These details help you plan the start date and space seedlings appropriately; follow the packet for the specific seed rather than assuming all varieties share the same schedule.
What supplies do you need to start seeds?
A basic indoor setup needs containers, a suitable growing medium, water and enough light. Burpee recommends small pots or cells and seed-starting soil or coir. Its seed-starting supplies collection also lists categories such as seed-starting mix, pellets, trays and a self-watering grow system. Those are options, not requirements for every gardener; choose equipment that fits your space and follow its use instructions.

What should you know before ordering?
Seeds and live plants may follow different shipping schedules. Burpee says live plants are shipped to arrive at an appropriate planting time for the customer’s USDA growing zone. It also says some seeds or plants cannot ship to certain states, seeds and plants may arrive separately because they ship from different locations, and unavailable items cannot be preordered. These policies and seasonal availability can change, so check the current product listing and shipping details before placing an order.
What does Burpee say about its seed quality?
Burpee says its seeds germinate “up to 35% over required state and federal minimums” and describes its products as guaranteed on its About page. This is a company claim; the page does not state a publication year, and it is not an independent comparison showing that Burpee seeds outperform another brand.
