Buildings can be designed to accommodate change, but adaptability is a plan—not a guarantee of future capacity, lower environmental impact, or unlimited service life. In an October 13, 2026 ArchDaily feature, Agustina Iñiguez uses steel construction to explore strategies for adding to buildings, changing their uses, and making some components easier to disassemble and reconfigure. The practical lesson for owners and project teams is to anticipate plausible changes early, then verify every proposed intervention through engineering, code review, and project-specific documentation.
What built-in adaptability means
Building needs shift as users, programs, and environmental, economic, and technical conditions change. A design that assumes a building will keep the same occupants and purpose indefinitely may make later changes difficult or demolition more likely. Built-in adaptability means considering likely interventions at the design stage: adding capacity, changing a building’s use, or replacing or relocating selected components while retaining useful parts of the existing structure.

Iñiguez’s feature presents steel as one lens on this approach. Dimensional precision, industrialized components, and the potential for mechanical connections can support open structural systems. The article refers to the Neue Nationalgalerie and Centre Pompidou as historical examples of steel’s role in large-span and flexible architecture; it does not treat them as measured demonstrations of lifecycle performance.
Two different kinds of future change
Planning for growth
A building intended to expand may need connection points and reserved areas identified in advance. Designers can consider dimensions, spans, load capacity, and building systems so that a later addition is more feasible. Repetitive, standardized systems may make it easier to connect new modules or levels to an existing building.
#1 Best Overall
- Valued Carpenter Pencil Set: You will get 2 pcs solid carpenter pencils with 26 piece 2.8 mm refills, 1 replaceable sharpener, 1 plastic storage box.The complete carpenter pencils combination allows you to finish your work faster and more easily
- Deep Hole Marker Pencil: The deep-hole construction pencils adopts 45mm elongated tip design, which is more convenient to mark in the small hole or in other tight areas that other carpenter markers cannot reach
- Carpenter Pencils with Sharpener: The sharpener is screwed into the top of the work pencil, which won't get lost either. Built-in pencil sharpener that keep the lead with pointed and smooth to Improves line of sight in fine work
- Stronger Solid Lead: This work pencil is matched with a 2.8 mm thick lead , which is much thicker and stronger during the drawing process of construction work, it will not break or damage easily
- Marks on Various Surfaces: 3 colors solid construction pencil can marks on various surfaces, such as metal, plastic, wood, paper etc. Ideals for woodworkers, contractors, craftsmen, builders, merchants and masons
These measures establish design intent, not proof that a future addition is safe or permissible. Whether a structure can accept another level or an extension depends on its actual condition and engineering, applicable loads and codes, building services, and site constraints. The ArchDaily feature supplies no calculations or guarantee that any particular building can accept a later addition.
Planning for a new use
Adaptation can also mean changing what a building is for: an office might become housing, an industrial building cultural space, or a commercial property an educational or community facility. That kind of conversion may require changes to interior components and building systems while retaining as much of the existing architecture as remains useful.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
The right strategy depends on the proposed program and the building. Retaining existing structure can avoid unnecessary replacement, but the article provides no quantitative comparison of retention, renovation, and rebuilding. A design team must establish feasibility for the specific project rather than assume that an adaptable-looking interior can support every new use.
How connections affect future options
Standardized components and mechanical connections—including bolted connections—may make some additions, disassembly, and reassembly more practical than extensive demolition. Their value is in creating options: components designed to come apart may be easier to alter or recover than elements that are permanently joined.

The Katerk bit holder is cast from high-quality alloy material, promising a long product lifespan. Despite its rugged strength, the bit holder remains lightweight, making it portable.
- 【Cool Christmas Gift For Men Stocking Stuffers】 This screwdriver bit holder, driver bit holder, impact bit holder, can be given as a gift to your loved one, especially for anyone involved in construction or electrical work. It's a must-have for stocking stuffers for men and women, tools gifts for dad, tech gadgets for men, gifts for dad, gifts for him, gifts for husband, gifts for boyfriend, cool gadgets for men, and cool gifts for dad.
A bolted connection alone does not guarantee reuse. Recovery depends on the detail and condition of the component, records that identify it, careful handling, and a viable destination. The feature gives no detailed engineering specifications for a particular alteration, so it cannot establish the safety, code compliance, or reuse potential of a given building.
What the projects illustrate—and what they do not
Laab Is More, Thailand
Designed by Sifah Studio, Laab Is More draws on local vernacular forms and community life while aiming to minimize wood use. Concrete foundations and a concrete structural system support steel columns, beams, and a roof truss. The corrugated roof sheets are identified as BlueScope Zacs Cool steel in Asian White. Wall cladding echoes traditional rice-barn panels, and the roof is separated from the walls to create an intermediate space.

FNI Office & Workshop, Jakarta
Designed by Heru Mudito Prasetyo, this factory and office complex responds to constraints in a steel-fabrication operation where conveyor belts and rollers had become inefficient. The feature describes elevated structures, ventilation, natural lighting, and a building volume shaped around operational needs. It reports no measured before-and-after productivity or environmental outcomes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to assess an adaptability proposal
For an owner or project team, the useful question is not simply whether a building is called flexible. Ask what change is anticipated, which parts of the building make it possible, and what evidence would be needed before undertaking it.
- Name the likely change. Distinguish a planned extension from conversion to a different use; they place different demands on structure, space, and services.
- Identify enabling provisions. Look for documented connection locations, reserved extension areas, structural dimensions and spans, capacity assumptions, and strategies for building systems.
- Check the actual building. Have qualified professionals assess condition, loads, services, site limitations, and local code requirements for the proposed intervention.
- Review how components are joined. Mechanical connections may help with disassembly, but confirm details, access, component condition, and records rather than inferring reuse from the connection type.
- Ask for outcome evidence. Claims about energy, heat, waste, cost, durability, or lifecycle benefits need project-specific measurements or independent technical support.
What “infinite lifecycle” can—and cannot—mean
The feature frames efficiency partly in terms of how many transformations a building can accommodate while retaining architectural or material value. That is a useful design ambition, not a measured performance standard. “Infinite lifecycle” is rhetorical: buildings do not thereby acquire endless service lives, and the article reports no lifecycle assessment, numerical comparison, or quantified savings in energy, waste, cost, or emissions.
