Brazilian coastal houses do more than point large windows at the ocean. They edit the horizon through screens, structural frames, calibrated openings and changing floor levels, balancing visual contact with shade, privacy and shelter. Angra House fragments the panorama through a wooden mashrabiya; Ponte House projects over a slope while its steel structure makes a shaded threshold; Modico House controls the gaze with doors and openings, including one 3 × 3 metre portal to a deck; and RLW House turns movement through staggered levels into a sequence of sea views. Together, the projects show that an ocean view is an architectural operation: the house selects how, when and from where the sea is seen.

Why is framing the ocean an architectural problem?

A sea-facing site appears to offer an obvious solution: remove the wall and expose the panorama. Yet an entirely open facade can erase privacy, increase glare and heat, and make the interior feel unprotected. The four houses featured by Camilla Ghisleni for ArchDaily treat the horizon as material to be edited rather than scenery to be displayed.

That idea has a long history. In De Pictura (1435), Leon Battista Alberti described painting as a window onto what one wants to represent. In a 1923 debate, Le Corbusier defended the horizontal fenêtre en longueur, while Auguste Perret preferred a vertical opening that could include both ground and sky. Perret criticized the horizontal window as a “perpetual panorama” and “an amputation of the landscape.” The Brazilian examples revisit that disagreement at full building scale: each house decides what the horizon should do inside domestic life.

How does Angra House filter an uninterrupted panorama?

Studio Arthur Casas reorganized an existing coastal condition in Rio de Janeiro so rooms occupy different levels and encounter the ocean in several everyday situations. The house does not depend on a single sheet of glass. Instead, a wooden mashrabiya stands between inside and outside.

Its slats preserve a visual relationship while limiting exposure. The sea arrives as fragments, and the eye joins those fragments into a larger image. This makes privacy an active part of viewing: the screen is not a decorative layer added after the view, but an instrument that controls its rhythm, scale and degree of disclosure.

How does Ponte House turn structure into a shaded lookout?

TETRO Arquitetura suspends Ponte House above a slope in Florianópolis and projects it toward the horizon. Its steel structure draws on the image of the city’s bridge, but the reference is practical as well as visual. The structural frame thickens the boundary between room and landscape, creating a place to pause rather than a paper-thin edge.

Structure and shadow moderate the view, particularly against the western sun. The ocean remains the house’s destination, yet the projecting form also makes a refuge from which to inhabit that distance. Ponte House therefore combines prospect—the desire to reach outward—with refuge, the need for a protected and shaded interior threshold.

How does Modico House make a smaller opening feel more expansive?

At São Miguel do Gostoso in Rio Grande do Norte, Atelier Branco Arquitetura arranges two symmetrical volumes and a sequence of doors with different dimensions. The openings do not reveal the sea all at once. They lead the gaze gradually toward it, giving the horizon a measured progression.

The largest opening is 3 × 3 metres and connects directly to a beach-facing deck. Bedrooms receive a more intimate version of the view through horizontal wooden slats. By limiting what is visible in private rooms, the design gives the distant horizon a clear scale within the domestic setting. Seeing less can make the sea more perceptible because the house supplies a near frame against which distance is understood.

How does RLW House create cinematic ocean views?

Jacobsen Arquitetura faced a constrained site in Guarujá, São Paulo, while accommodating an extensive program. Rather than spread everything across one level, the house is organized vertically through staggered floors that follow changing elevations in the terrain.

Social areas retain ocean views, but no single viewpoint explains the whole house. As occupants move between levels, the sea appears, disappears and reappears from different heights and angles. The result is cinematic in the literal sense of a sequence: movement through the building edits time and viewpoint, turning circulation into part of the landscape experience.

What design strategies do the four houses share?

Project Primary framing device Response to terrain Privacy or environmental control Experience of movement
Angra House Wooden mashrabiya Spaces distributed across different levels in an existing coastal condition Filtered, fragmented exposure through slats Sea encountered as still visual fragments
Ponte House Steel structure and deep threshold Suspended above a slope Shadow and structure protect against western sun Reach toward the horizon from a sheltered edge
Modico House Symmetrical volumes, varied doors and openings Paired-volume composition Horizontal slats make bedroom views more intimate Gaze advances gradually toward the deck and sea
RLW House Staggered levels and serial viewpoints Vertical organization follows changing elevations Spatial separation gives each floor a degree of independence Walking produces a changing, cinematic sequence

Across the projects, the key variables are exposure, refuge, framing, terrain, solar control and time. None treats a coastal house as a single glazed facade. Screens, shadows, doors and level changes all make the view selective and therefore inhabitable.

How can architects preserve privacy while opening to the sea?

These examples suggest several practical moves for a coastal brief:

  • Filter instead of simply expose: A mashrabiya or slatted layer can maintain orientation to the water while preventing direct views into living spaces.
  • Design a thick edge: A structural frame, covered terrace or deep reveal provides shade and a place to occupy the boundary.
  • Vary opening size by room: Large public-room openings can lead to a deck, while bedrooms use narrower or screened apertures.
  • Use level changes deliberately: Staggered floors can preserve views on a tight site and give each room a distinct relationship to the horizon.
  • choreograph arrival and movement: A sequence of doors or landings can reveal the sea progressively instead of exhausting the view at the entrance.

What does the historical window debate add to these projects?

Alberti’s window metaphor and the Le Corbusier–Perret disagreement clarify why “more glass” is not a complete design position. A horizontal opening promises continuity, while a vertical or selectively placed opening can include more of the ground, sky and immediate surroundings. The four Brazilian houses move beyond that binary: they use screens, frames and sectional organization to compose a view that changes with privacy needs, sunlight and movement.

Ghisleni’s formulation is concise: “The architecture does not simply open onto the ocean; it constructs a particular way of seeing it.” That construction is the shared subject of the four projects, even though their forms and sites differ.

What should a coastal-house brief specify before design begins?

A useful brief should describe the desired experience, not just request an ocean-facing elevation. Define which rooms need direct horizon contact, where privacy is essential, how western sun will be controlled, whether the site calls for suspension or stepped construction, and whether movement through the house should reveal successive views. These decisions determine the window, screen, threshold and level strategies before facade details are drawn.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a mashrabiya in coastal house design?

A mashrabiya is a perforated or slatted screen traditionally used to filter views, light and air. In Angra House, the wooden screen lets occupants remain visually connected to the sea while reducing direct exposure and preserving privacy.

Why can a smaller window make a landscape feel larger?

A limited opening supplies a near scale reference—a wall, door or room edge—against which the distant horizon can be read. Modico House uses this contrast so the sea is perceived as a measured depth rather than an undifferentiated expanse.

How does western sunlight affect an ocean-facing house?

Low western sun can produce glare and substantial heat late in the day, even when a view is desirable. Ponte House addresses that condition with a projecting steel structure and shadowed threshold rather than relying on an unprotected opening.

Can level changes improve views on a narrow coastal site?

Yes. Staggered floors can preserve sightlines while fitting a large program into limited ground area, and they give different rooms distinct elevations. RLW House uses this sectional strategy to make circulation part of the view.

Where can I read Alberti’s original window metaphor?

The idea appears in Leon Battista Alberti’s De Pictura (1435), commonly translated as On Painting. It is the historical starting point for understanding the window as a deliberate frame for representation.
