Building an Affordable Press for Heat-Set Inserts

A small drill press can guide a soldering iron for heat-set inserts with a compatible tip and printed adapter. Compare that approach with sliding extrusion rigs, then check fit, heat, and part preparation before installing inserts.

A guided press keeps a soldering iron vertical while you seat heat-set inserts in 3D-printed parts. The simplest documented approach repurposes a small drill press, a compatible soldering iron and insert tip, and a printed adapter. FixturFab published a parts total of $80.39 in 2024; that is a historical figure, not a current quote. An extrusion-based sliding fixture is another option if you already have the parts and prefer to fabricate a frame.

How the press works

The fixture controls the iron’s alignment; heat and the correct insert-and-hole combination create the joint. A heat-set insert has a knurled or barbed exterior that anchors in softened thermoplastic and an internal thread for a fastener. A press can make repeated installations easier to guide, but it does not replace choosing the right insert, hole dimensions, temperature, or technique.

FixturFab describes installing inserts by hand as well as using a press to speed work during small production runs. Its design uses a drill press frame for vertical movement and a printed adapter to hold the soldering iron. The adapter must suit the chosen iron’s dimensions and the drill press holder; do not assume one printed part fits every tool. FixturFab’s DIY Heat-Set Insert Press was last updated November 4, 2024.

Option 1: Adapt a small drill press

This is the most direct documented build: use the drill press as a guided vertical-action frame, fit a printed adapter to grip the iron, and install a dedicated heat-set insert tip that matches the iron and insert. FixturFab’s cited parts list was:

Kaisiking Helping Hands Soldering Station with Magnifying Glass
  • SOLDERING STATION WITH MAGNIFYING GLASS: 2.5X magnifying glass can help you zoom in on tiny details while working, ensuring the accuracy of your work as much as possible.
  • Purchase Notice: Our welding station secures the magnifying glass and alligator clip hose with screws. When adjusting the rotating arm during use, simply turn it counterclockwise—opposite the direction of screw tightening—and the arm will not loosen; instead, it becomes even more secure. Users who have reported arm loosening in reviews, as well as new buyers, are encouraged to try this method—you'll be pleasantly surprised. Trust users understand how screw threads work.
  • STURDY GOOSENECK PIPE:4 adjustable 8.34 inch metal gooseneck arms are tightly locked to the base with screws. The alligator clips can be rotated 360 degrees, then positioned and locked in place. The clip comes with a rubber boot to avoid scratching the polished surface of the jewelry or short circuits.
  • HEAVY DUTY BASE: Kaisiking soldering helping hands with weighted metal base,7.87" x 5.51" rectangular painted steel base ensures your soldering station won't tip over.
  • NON-SLIP FOOT PADS: There are 5 anti-slip rubber pads on the bottom to prevent the welding assistant from sliding on the workbench and protect your work surface from scratches and scuffs.
Part Published amount
Drill press $46.98
Weller 40-watt soldering iron $21.17
Heat-set insert soldering tips $11.99
Printed adapter $0.25
Total $80.39

These amounts are FixturFab’s published 2024 list, not current prices or confirmation of present stock. The guide does not establish a current model number. Before building, check the drill press geometry, the iron’s diameter, the adapter fit, and whether the selected tip fits both the iron and the insert. FixturFab describes a “green” drill press and an adapter made for the selected iron; color alone is not a compatibility specification.

Option 2: Build a sliding extrusion fixture

If you would rather make a frame—or already have suitable hardware—a sliding arm guided on aluminum extrusion can provide the same basic vertical action. The designs below involve more mechanical components and adaptation than the drill-press approach.

Spring-loaded arm

Hackaday’s September 9, 2020 project describes an arm that slides vertically along aluminum extrusion, using smooth rod, springs, and fasteners. Its base can be made from scrap wood; the featured project used a storage base. Expect to adapt the arm or holder to the dimensions of your soldering iron. See Hackaday’s project description.

Roller-carriage rig

The Ruiz Brothers’ Adafruit Learning System rig uses 20 mm by 20 mm aluminum extrusion, a roller carriage, bearings, a soldering-iron holder, printed assemblies, and metric hardware. Its guide lists a 60-watt iron and dedicated tips. One referenced M3/#4-40 tip is marked no longer stocked on the guide, so check present sourcing and compatibility rather than treating that listing as available. Choose the fixture around your tools and fabrication capacity

Decision factor Drill-press frame Custom extrusion fixture
Parts on hand Most attractive if you already have a suitable small drill press; the documented design also needs an iron, insert tip, and printed adapter (FixturFab, updated November 4, 2024). May suit a maker with extrusion, bearings, rod, springs, and fasteners already available (Adafruit, last edited May 1, 2024; Hackaday, September 9, 2020).
Fabrication effort The documented adaptation centers on a printed adapter (FixturFab, updated November 4, 2024). Requires a larger set of mechanical and custom parts, with details depending on the design (Adafruit, last edited May 1, 2024; Hackaday, September 9, 2020).
Tool fit Adapter must match the iron and fit the press arrangement (FixturFab, updated November 4, 2024). Holder or sliding arm must suit the iron; the Adafruit design also uses a roller carriage (Adafruit, last edited May 1, 2024; Hackaday, September 9, 2020).
Current component cost and availability Current prices and stock are not stated by FixturFab; its listed total is $80.39 in its 2024 guide. Current total cost is not stated in the project guides; Adafruit marks one referenced tip no longer stocked (Adafruit, last edited May 1, 2024).

The published guides do not provide a controlled side-by-side test of speed or alignment accuracy. Choose based on what you can build and fit reliably rather than assuming one architecture performs better.

Prepare the printed part and insert

  • Use an insert designed for heat installation in the thermoplastic used for the part.
  • Follow the insert maker’s recommended hole dimensions. Confirm the insert orientation and that the tip is intended to fit the insert.
  • Set up the fixture so the iron can travel straight down and the tip can reach the insert without the iron or hot tip contacting and damaging the surrounding part.
  • Try the process on representative printed coupons before relying on a setting for finished parts. Material, printing method, geometry, insert, and tool can affect the result.

Install with controlled heat and straight pressure

  1. Secure the printed part and align the insert beneath the iron tip.
  2. Heat the iron using guidance appropriate to the insert, polymer, and tool. SPIROL gives a typical soldering-iron installation range of 650–750°F (343–399°C), and a rule of thumb of the material’s heat-deflection temperature plus 150°F (65°C). These are SPIROL’s guidance, not universal settings for every polymer or insert; follow the insert and material makers’ recommendations and validate on coupons. SPIROL’s 2026 guide also distinguishes heat/ultrasonic inserts from press-in inserts. Its recommendation for constant pressure from an arbor press applies to press-in inserts, not soldering-iron heat-setting.
  3. Lower the iron steadily so the insert enters straight. TriMech advises a straight, steady push rather than rocking the insert. TriMech’s installation guidance says a 40-watt iron is sufficient for all but the largest inserts in its guidance; the 40- and 60-watt irons in the project examples are not a universal wattage requirement.
  4. Keep the iron and heated brass away from skin, flammable items, and heat-sensitive work surfaces. Let the installed insert cool before fitting a fastener.

How print settings affect insert performance

SPIROL’s 2026 guide identifies 0.16–0.2 mm layer thickness, at least 50% infill, and a wall-loop count equal to or above the insert’s nominal metric size as an optimal configuration in its findings. It also reports that, under its specified high-infill and wall-thickness conditions, FDM parts carry approximately 70–80% of equivalent molded-material performance; its cited SLS comparison is approximately 50–70% of molded-plastic performance. These are document-specific findings, not guarantees for a particular part: SPIROL notes results vary with printing methods, materials, and parameters and recommends testing individual assemblies.
