A genuine vintage Altair offers the greatest historical authenticity, but it also brings restoration, electrical-safety, scarcity, and repair challenges. Modern systems such as the Altair-Duino and Altair 8800 Mini reproduce the front-panel experience and software environment far more practically.
The important distinction is between historical authenticity, functional authenticity, and visual authenticity. Decide which matters most before choosing a build path.

What the Altair 8800 was
MITS—the Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems company, led by Ed Roberts—developed the Altair 8800 around Intel’s 8080 processor. The machine became famous after appearing on the cover of the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics. That exposure showed electronics hobbyists that a computer could be sold directly to individuals as a kit.

Calling it the first personal computer ever is too absolute: the answer depends on whether “personal computer” means a microcomputer, a machine sold to individuals, a programmable kit, or a usable general-purpose system.

The Altair also became part of the origin story of Microsoft. Bill Gates and Paul Allen saw the Popular Electronics cover and developed Altair BASIC. Gates’s account is a useful firsthand recollection, but the Altair’s influence also came from the wider hobbyist ecosystem it helped create.
IEEE Spectrum’s historical and build account, the University of York computer-history exhibit, and MITS historical-reproduction material provide additional context.
What the original kit contained
The original Altair was an electronics construction project, not a ready-to-use desktop computer. Its core included an Intel 8080 8-bit CPU with a 16-bit address bus, supporting logic, a front panel of toggle switches and LEDs, and an S-100 expansion bus. Memory and peripheral cards were added as the owner’s budget and needs allowed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIt did not arrive with a conventional keyboard, monitor, operating system, or mass-storage system. Early owners might have had only a small amount of memory and the front panel. Period advertising listed a kit price of $495, with a $100 introductory discount before March 1, 1975, although prices varied by configuration and date. Those are historical prices, not current buying guidance.
How people operated an original Altair
The front panel was not merely decorative. It was the initial user interface:
- Set the address bits with the toggle switches.
- Set the data bits for the instruction or value to be stored.
- Use the control switches to deposit that value into memory.
- Repeat the process for a bootstrap loader or small program.
- Transfer control to the loaded program.
- Use a serial terminal after adding suitable interface hardware and software.
This explains why an original Altair should not be imagined as a keyboard-and-screen computer. For practical programming, owners needed additional memory, an I/O interface, a terminal, storage, and software. BASIC and later operating systems made the machine much more usable, but those capabilities depended on the installed hardware and configuration.

Restoring a genuine vintage machine
Choose an original Altair only if historical hardware is the point of the project. Expect aging components, difficult-to-source parts, possible power-supply work, scarce documentation, and troubleshooting at the board and bus-signal level. A vintage unit should be inspected and electrically restored before regular operation; it is a poor default choice for a beginner or anyone expecting immediate access to BASIC or CP/M.

Building an Altair-Duino
Altair-Duino systems use modern microcontroller hardware—originally associated with Arduino Due-based implementations—to emulate the Altair internally while retaining its characteristic panel. The documented implementation supports front-panel switches and LEDs, USB and serial connectivity, Bluetooth on supported versions, software selection, Microsoft 4K and 16K BASIC, games such as Lunar Lander, Star Trek, and Hunt the Wumpus, SD-card disk images, and CP/M support.
That convenience is also the key qualification: an Altair-Duino is a modern emulator in an Altair-inspired enclosure, not a discrete-logic reproduction of the 1970s machine.
Buying an Altair 8800 Mini
The Altair Mini product family offers compact modern hardware with different combinations of terminal, Wi-Fi, storage, floppy, and expansion features. Vendor listings showed configurations from roughly €149 to €229 for emulator, Mini, and full-size products, with expansion bundles costing more. Prices, stock, taxes, customs, warranty handling, and shipping can change; the vendor advertises a special U.S. shipping price of €35, but checkout terms should be verified.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhat assembling a modern kit involves
A through-hole kit is approachable for someone with basic soldering ability, but it is still an electronics project. Typical work includes:
- Inventory the parts. Confirm the board, components, panel, controller, headers, case hardware, and accessories match the kit revision.
- Install low-profile parts first. Resistors are normally easier to fit before sockets, headers, and taller components.
- Check orientation. Verify LED polarity, IC orientation, connector direction, and component values against the specific manual.
- Align the front panel. Install the panel while positioning the LEDs, then inspect alignment before permanently soldering the assembly.
- Install the controller and connectors. Attach the Arduino-compatible controller, serial hardware, USB connections, and storage accessories supplied by that version.
- Inspect the board. Look for solder bridges, cold joints, uncut leads, reversed parts, and poorly seated headers.
- Test before final enclosure assembly. Confirm power rails, switches, LEDs, and communications while access remains easy.
- Load the appropriate firmware and software. Use documentation for the exact hardware revision rather than assuming that instructions for another model apply.
The required tools are a temperature-controlled soldering iron, suitable fine solder, flush cutters, small screwdrivers, a multimeter, solder wick or a desoldering pump, good lighting, and magnification. Useful skills include reading resistor values, recognizing LED polarity, checking continuity and voltage, inspecting joints, and configuring a serial terminal.
The Altair-Duino vendor estimates approximately five to six hours for one Pro kit, but that is a vendor estimate. Actual time depends on the revision, soldering experience, inspection, and troubleshooting.

Connecting a replica to a modern computer
Connection methods vary by model. Possible interfaces include USB serial, a DE-9 serial connector, Bluetooth, built-in terminal emulation, VGA, USB keyboard, and SD-card storage. The Altair-Duino Pro listing identifies VGA, USB keyboard support, DE-9 serial, audio, SD storage, and support for six expansion cards in its bus implementation.

In the IEEE account, a Mac software terminal was opened with:
screen /dev/tty.usbmodemXXXX 115200
This is an example, not a universal command. The device name varies by operating system and hardware, and the required baud rate depends on the firmware. The expected result is a terminal connection to the replica’s configuration or emulated serial interface, after which supported software can be selected or launched.
If there is no connection, confirm that the USB cable carries data, select the correct serial device, close other programs using the port, verify the baud rate, and reset the replica. On a newly assembled unit, inspect headers, shorts, component orientation, and regulator or power-supply issues.
Software and compatibility
A modern Altair system may provide:
- Front-panel demonstration programs.
- Altair BASIC, including 4K and 16K variants on supported implementations.
- Early games such as Lunar Lander, Star Trek, and Hunt the Wumpus.
- CP/M where the firmware and emulated hardware support it.
- Forth and other community-developed software.
- Virtual floppy or hard-drive images on systems with SD-card support.
- Machine-language programming entered through the switches.
Compatibility is not all-or-nothing. Check the firmware’s CPU accuracy, memory configuration, peripheral emulation, disk-image format, terminal behavior, and whether the system exposes a genuine S-100-style electrical bus or only emulates one. “Runs CP/M” and “compatible with original software” must always be tied to a particular model and firmware version.
Troubleshooting common failures
The LEDs work, but the computer does not communicate
Separate panel operation from computer operation. Check the USB data connection, serial-device selection, terminal settings, firmware, controller headers, and solder bridges. Functional LEDs do not prove that the serial interface or firmware configuration is correct.
The panel is partly dark or switches behave incorrectly
Likely causes include reversed LEDs, poor solder joints, a bridged pin, an incorrectly seated header, or switch-wiring errors. Recheck polarity and continuity before replacing components.

Terminal text is garbled
Verify the baud rate and other terminal settings required by the specific firmware. Close competing serial applications and reconnect after resetting the system.
BASIC starts but software will not load
Check the memory configuration, image format, storage device, loading method, and terminal implementation. A BASIC image that works on one firmware revision may not be selectable or usable on another.
The SD card is not detected
Confirm that the card and disk-image format are supported, the card is prepared as the documentation specifies, and the storage hardware is properly seated. Avoid assuming that every Altair-compatible program or image is supported by every replica.
How authentic is a modern replica?
Ask what is being reproduced:
- Instruction set: Does it behave like an Intel 8080 system?
- Front panel: Are switches and LEDs physically operated?
- Bus: Is there a real S-100-style expansion interface or a software model?
- Timing: Does execution reproduce original timing closely enough for the intended software?
- Peripherals: Are serial, disk, cassette, and terminal devices emulated?
- Software: Are BASIC, CP/M, and disk images actually included and supported?
- Construction: Are the case, boards, wiring, and power system period-correct?
A modern replica may offer more memory, USB, VGA, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, SD-card storage, CP/M, and multiple BASIC versions—capabilities that make it more useful than the original. Those are conveniences, not evidence of original circuitry.

Final recommendation
Choose a genuine vintage Altair if restoration and historical hardware are your purpose. Choose a full-size Altair-Duino Pro-style kit if the front panel, cabinet, soldering project, and broad modern feature set matter most. Choose an Altair-Duino Experimenter for a smaller, less expensive hands-on build. Choose an Altair 8800 Mini for a compact, more turnkey system. Choose a software emulator if you mainly want to study the processor, BASIC, CP/M, or early programs. Build a custom open-source system only if designing and debugging the hardware is itself the goal.
