A flash flood on Nepal’s Budhi Gandaki River swept away the construction camp and some equipment belonging to the 341 MW Budhi Gandaki Hydropower Project on October 11, 2026. The camp was at Salleri in Chumnubri Rural Municipality-3, Gorkha district. The full extent of damage to the project had not been established in same-day reports.
What the flood damaged
The project is a semi-reservoir hydropower plant under construction. Nepal News reported that the flood swept away its construction camp and some equipment; that account does not establish that the entire project site or generating equipment was destroyed. Kathmandu Post reported damage to homes and bridges across Chumnubri and Dharche rural municipalities, while the full damage assessment was still incomplete.

The Associated Press reported on October 11 that about three dozen houses had been swept away and four bridges damaged or destroyed. Those are figures from AP’s same-day account, not a final assessment.
Urja Khabar, citing the Independent Power Producers’ Association of Nepal (IPPAN), reported damage to four under-construction hydropower projects in the corridor, with a combined capacity of 412.09 MW. The reported impacts included camps, construction equipment and materials, bridges, and access infrastructure. That corridor-wide figure is separate from the 341 MW capacity of the Budhi Gandaki project; it does not quantify the damage to any one project.

What was reported about missing people and rescue
Casualty and rescue figures differed between same-day reports and should be read with their source and timing. Kathmandu Post reported four people missing in a shed near the Ungilung River and said authorities had not confirmed deaths or injuries in its account, published October 11 and updated at 09:18 Nepal time. AP later reported that Nepal’s disaster authority said at least five people were missing. AP also reported that the army had rescued 49 people by Sunday afternoon. These were developing figures, not a final count.
What authorities said about the flood’s cause
The cause was not fully reconciled across the October 11 reports. Kathmandu Post said authorities were still gathering information and relayed possible landslide blockages near the Syar River and near the Ungilung River in Chumchet. AP attributed a different, more specific account to Nepal’s disaster authority: a landslide blocked the Budhi Gandaki near Chumchure, forming a dam that later breached and triggered the flood. The reports do not establish that these locations and accounts refer to the same blockage.

What remains unknown about the project
Same-day reporting established the loss of the camp and some equipment, but not the full extent of damage to project works, the project’s overall operational status, or any construction-schedule consequence. Nepal News reported an estimated construction cost of Rs 70 billion; that is the estimate reported by that outlet, not a post-flood cost assessment. The available incident reports do not establish a revised cost, delay, insurance outcome, or cancellation.
