Start with the house and the conditions of the site, plan how people will use the space, and choose a restrained palette that suits the scale. The result can feel bold without becoming cold, whether it is a courtyard, balcony or larger garden.
Begin with the building, site and intended use
Brutalist gardening is not a fixed recipe or a requirement to copy a building style literally. It translates architectural qualities—clear forms, visible materials and purposeful structure—into an outdoor layout. The strongest starting point is the architecture the garden meets: note its lines, finishes, levels and the views from inside. Repeating one or two materials or aligning a path, wall or planter with the building can make the transition feel deliberate. Garden Design’s modern garden guide emphasizes planning the space around its function and relationship to the home, not just its appearance.
Before choosing paving or plants, map the practical conditions: sun and shade, wind exposure, drainage, soil, access to water and existing level changes. Then decide what the garden must do. Dining, moving between doors, creating privacy and finding a quiet seat each call for different space and circulation. Sketch the main route, outdoor rooms and important indoor-to-garden views first; details can follow.
Build a simple, repeatable hardscape framework
Choose a small group of materials and use them consistently across paths, walls, planters, seating or a water feature. Concrete, stone, steel, timber and gravel can all work in a modern composition; the aim is coherence, not using every material at once. Large-format slabs or pavers can give a patio or path a strong rhythm, while gravel or crushed stone can form a transition, edge or path. Scale each element to the property so paving does not overwhelm a compact yard.

Hard geometry does not require a barren result. In a Cambridge courtyard project, minimalist hard landscaping and concrete furniture were balanced by relaxed planting and greenery in paving joints; corten steel planters and a water feature echoed the garden’s geometry. It is one example of how crisp edges and informal planting can work together, not a universal design formula. Colm Joseph Gardens’ Cambridge courtyard case study shows that contrast in practice.
Use planting to soften, structure and animate the space
Plants supply the change and movement that hard materials cannot. Repeat a few structural plants to give the composition rhythm, then layer grasses, perennials, climbers or looser naturalistic planting to soften edges and add seasonal texture. Near a seating area, planting can feel organized; toward the garden’s edges, looser forms can help connect the design to surrounding vegetation. Colin Miller, a landscape designer interviewed by Garden Design, cautions against a sterile, museum-like landscape and describes the warmth of loose, lively planting.

Choose plants for the local climate and the conditions at their actual planting locations—not because they appear in a photograph from somewhere else. Consider mature size, sun, shade, heat, frost, wind, rainfall, soil and water access. A plant that suits a sheltered courtyard may struggle in an exposed, hot strip beside a wall.
What a Brisbane project illustrates—and what it does not
At the Chambers house in subtropical Brisbane, landscape designer Steven Clegg used tough plants in a harsh strip between bitumen and a block wall. Sculptural agave and dracaena, contained creeping fig, climbers and Indian mast trees helped bring softness, containment, vertical emphasis and privacy to the setting. Clegg said, “The green was really important to soften and settle the house.” The species and techniques belong to that particular climate and site; they should not be treated as a generally suitable planting list. ABC Gardening Australia’s Chambers house case study provides the project details.

Adapt the design to a courtyard, balcony or larger garden
Courtyards and small urban gardens
In a small footprint, a few larger angular containers can create a clearer composition than many small pots. A trellis can add vertical growth without taking up much floor space. Keep the route through the area clear, and use a focal point only if it supports a view or gives the space a purpose. A compact basin may suit a small courtyard; a reflecting pool or pond generally calls for more room and maintenance.
Balconies and raised installations
Containers and vertical planting can bring the same geometry and greenery to a balcony, but heavy pots, wet soil and water features add substantial loads. Confirm that the balcony or raised structure can carry the intended installation and provide adequate drainage before specifying them. The design guidance supports containers and trellises as space-saving approaches; it does not establish structural capacity. Seek qualified advice for that site-specific question.

Larger yards
With more room, use paving, walls or planted boundaries to define outdoor rooms and guide movement between them. Consider how the garden is seen from inside as well as experienced outdoors. Repeating a material or line across those views helps tie the house and landscape together without forcing every area into the same use.

- Seating: Place it where people can use it comfortably and where it relates to a route, view or outdoor room.
- Water: A basin can provide a compact focal point; larger pools need space and ongoing care. Use one when it contributes to the experience rather than as a default feature.
- Lighting: Keep it subdued, but provide enough light for safe circulation and evening use. Check local electrical and weatherproofing requirements for outdoor installations.
- Paths: Make routes direct and usable, with paving or gravel suited to the ground conditions and the way people will move through the garden.
Modern garden guidance discusses these features as options to be selected according to the space and its use, rather than essentials for every design. Garden Design’s planning and feature guidance includes paving, containers, water and lighting considerations.

Concrete and metal can feel cool when every surface is hard, bare and uniform. Planting is the main counterweight: use texture, varied heights and movement, and allow green edges to interrupt the geometry. Timber, rust-toned corten steel and carefully chosen color can add warmth while keeping the material palette controlled. The contrast is part of the effect: Gina Taylor, founder of East London Garden Design, described planting against concrete as a contrast that can make a space feel calmer and more human in Livingetc’s 2026 interview about the Barbican’s Beech Gardens.
For a practical design decision, compare options by site fit, scale, maintenance, material character and function. Ask how paving size affects circulation, how large plants will become, how finishes weather, and what pruning, irrigation, leaf cleanup or water-feature upkeep will involve. There is no single correct material or planting formula; the right choices depend on the building and the site.
Quick Recap
A practical sequence for planning
- Survey the space: Record the building’s geometry and finishes, levels, drainage, soil, light, exposure and access.
- Set the uses: Mark dining, seating, privacy needs, paths and views from the house.
- Draw the framework: Establish the main lines and outdoor rooms before choosing individual products or plants.
- Limit and repeat materials: Select a small palette of hardscape finishes and use it consistently at an appropriate scale.
- Plan the planting: Choose for local conditions and mature size, combining repeated structure with softer layers.
- Add only useful features: Specify seating, water and lighting where they support the garden’s use, and check drainage, safety and structural constraints.
