Use a string trimmer for grass, lawn edges and light weeds; choose a brushcutter for dense weeds, brush, fibrous grass and tougher vegetation. The key difference is the cutting attachment—but not every trimmer can take a blade. Check the exact model’s manual and approved equipment before choosing or changing attachments.

What is the difference between a brushcutter and a string trimmer?

A string trimmer—also called a grass trimmer, line trimmer, weed whacker or whipper snipper—typically cuts with flexible nylon line. It is suited to lawn edges, grass and lighter weeds, and the line is useful for finishing around trees and fence posts. STIHL notes that line presents a lower risk of bark damage than a blade when working near trees. STIHL UK’s cutting-attachment guide and grass-trimmer guide describe these uses and common names.

A brushcutter is intended for heavier or denser growth. Depending on the model, it may use heavier line or a compatible cutting blade. A blade can tackle tougher vegetation, but it is less suited to close work around obstacles; follow the tool and attachment instructions. STIHL’s UK guide describes brushcutters as able to use a selection of attachments, but that general distinction does not mean every brushcutter accepts every blade—or that every grass trimmer is line-only.

Which tool fits the job?

Work or consideration String trimmer Brushcutter
Typical vegetation Grass, lawn edges and light weeds Dense weeds, brush, fibrous grass and tougher vegetation
Cutting system Usually flexible nylon line Heavier line or a compatible blade, depending on model
Near trees and posts Line is useful for finishing around obstacles and has a lower risk of bark damage than a blade, according to STIHL A blade may be less appropriate close to obstacles; check the instructions
Attachment compatibility Some models are line-only; others support specified attachments Confirm the attachment and required safety configuration in the manual
Site preparation Check for debris and keep bystanders clear Assess access and check especially carefully for rocks, metal and other hazards before blade work

This is a qualitative comparison, not a universal performance ranking. The manufacturer sources do not establish general differences in weight, power, noise, cost, runtime or clearing rate. If any of those matter, compare the specifications for the particular models you are considering.

Can you put a blade on a string trimmer?

Only if the manufacturer explicitly approves the blade for that exact model and specifies the required equipment configuration. Husqvarna says blade use is possible on select models, while STIHL’s US safety manual requires cutting attachments authorized for the particular FS model, along with the correct handle, harness and deflector. See Husqvarna Australia’s comparison and STIHL’s trimmer and brushcutter safety manual.

Do not assume a blade fits because it can be physically mounted, or buy a generic blade without verifying compatibility. The tool manual—not a general description of brushcutters—controls which attachment and safety parts are approved. Requirements can vary by model and market.

How to choose safely for a worksite

  1. Identify the vegetation. For grass, edges and light weeds, a line trimmer is generally appropriate. For dense weeds, brush or fibrous growth, look at a brushcutter and its approved cutting options.
  2. Inspect the area. Check access and look for rocks, metal and other objects that could be struck. Rotating line or a blade can cut; striking solid foreign objects can fling debris or damage an attachment. If the site is hazardous or cannot be accessed safely, STIHL advises asking a professional.
  3. Check the manual before fitting an attachment. Verify the attachment is authorized for the exact model and install the specified deflector, handle and harness combination.
  4. Use the specified protective equipment and operating procedure. STIHL’s operating guidance recommends face and hearing protection, protective glasses, gloves, long trousers and sturdy footwear; it also advises checking the work area and attachment installation and keeping other people at a safe distance. Follow the current manual for the model and market. See STIHL USA’s brushcutter operating guide.

What to compare when buying

Start with the vegetation and the attachments approved for the specific model. If you need to work close to trees, posts or other obstacles, consider whether a line head is the more appropriate option. For tougher growth, confirm that the model supports the line or blade you intend to use and includes or specifies the necessary safety configuration. Manufacturer guidance from the UK, Australia and the US reflects different markets; consult the current local manual and dealer for model-specific advice.
