State briefing material in 2026 shifted that expectation to summer 2026, and local reporting later moved it to fall 2026. The current schedule pushes mobilization to spring 2027.

Officials expect the work to be well underway by Easter 2028. That date is a progress marker rather than a stated completion date; the available schedule does not establish a final opening or substantial-completion day.

Why was the renovation delayed?
The latest postponement is tied to the project’s financing, specifically the sale and closing of tax-credit packages. Empire State Development construction lead Paul Ray said the project team makes its best estimate of when the tax-credit financing will close, but those transactions can take longer than expected.

The delay therefore reflects financing timing rather than a cancellation or a decision to abandon the renovation. Broadway Market Management Inc. board member and former Fillmore District councilman David Franczyk said the project is expected to move forward and that there is broad support for it.
How much will the Broadway Market project cost?
The transformation is valued at approximately $45 million, according to 2026 figures from Empire State Development and WKBW. About $39 million is identified as state funding in the same reporting. Those figures describe the project’s reported value and state-funding share; they are not a published item-by-item construction bid or a consumer price.

What will change inside the market?
The renovation is intended to modernize the city-owned market while preserving its architectural character and continuing its public-market function. The stated scope includes:

Will Broadway Market stay open during construction?
Officials say shoppers and vendors should not see an interruption through the upcoming holiday season or Easter 2027. The current operating plan does not call for a full closure while construction proceeds.
Instead, vendors are expected to be relocated within the market in phases as crews work through different areas. That approach can change which entrances, aisles or stalls are available at a given time, but it is intended to preserve ongoing market operations. Specific temporary stall assignments and a detailed public phasing map have not been released in the information available for this update.

Who is responsible for the project?
Empire State Development is the principal state funder and is leading the construction process. Broadway Market Management Inc. is the new nonprofit operator of the city-owned building.
