Box Joints: How They Work and How to Cut Them

A box joint uses square-ended fingers and sockets to form an interlocking corner. Compare table-saw and router-table setups and learn how to plan finger size and test the fit.

A box joint—also called a finger joint—is made from complementary square-ended fingers and sockets that interlock at a corner. It is commonly used for boxes, drawers, and carcases. You can cut one with an indexing jig on a table saw or with a straight bit and indexing fixture or template on a router table; the right setup depends on your machine, stock, and intended finger size.

What a box joint is

Each piece has alternating fingers and gaps. When the pieces meet, the fingers on one fit into the gaps on the other, creating a right-angle corner with multiple mating surfaces. The fingers have straight sides and square ends, unlike the angled teeth of a dovetail joint.

Box joints suit box-shaped work such as drawers and carcases. Their appearance and fit depend on consistent finger spacing and on the two mating pieces being cut to complementary patterns.

Choose a cutting method

Method Typical setup What to check
Table saw An indexing jig, often attached to a crosscut sled, registers each successive cut against a key or spacer. Compatibility with the saw and sled, cutter width, stock thickness, repeatability, and setup accuracy.
Router table A straight bit with an indexing fixture, or a router-jig template. Compatibility with the router and table, template limits on board width and finger size, adjustability, and setup effort.
Commercial router joinery jig A model-specific fixture or template with its own workpiece selection and alignment procedure. Verify the exact model, supported workpiece range, setup method, and current availability. Leigh’s RTJ400 guide includes box-joint instructions, while INCRA documents router-table alignment methods.

There is no evidence here for a controlled, like-for-like comparison of accuracy or cost across these methods. Choose based on the machine you own and the dimensions and setup demands of the work, rather than assuming one jig is universally best.

#1 Best Overall
Router Table Box Joint Jig with 1/4", 3/8" & 1/2" Indexing Keys
  • Box Joint Jig: Make a strong, tight-fitting box joint router bit that is great for small to medium-sized boxes! This woodworking tool makes the perfect accessory for your router table.
  • Interchangeable Indexing Keys: Our router jig uses precision-machined solid brass indexing keys to ensure uniform finger spacing. The keys are included for three finger widths: ¼”, ⅜” & ½”. With improvements in design, these router accessories can be swapped and can be stored in slots on the sled.
  • Smooth Sliding Sled: The smooth-sliding router table sled features long ''skis'' that keep it square to the router bit and tabs on the bottom that stop the sled at the end of the cut. Lock it into the miter slot of your router table with our comfortable Easy-to-Grip knobs and you're ready to route.
  • MDF Platform: Place the MDF fence on your box joint jig to control tear out and apply router bit lubricant on the melamine-coated low-friction MDF platform for easy sliding and enhancing durability. The ergonomic knobs lock the platform into a ¾” miter slot.
  • What’s Included: Our router finger joint jig includes the following essential woodwork tools - 1 Melamine-coated MDF platform, 2 Soft-grip knobs with miter track hardware, 1 Glass-filled nylon sled, 1 sacrificial fence face, a ¼” brass indexing key, a ⅜” brass indexing key, a ½” brass indexing key, and an instruction manual, all aimed to help you perfect your box joint routing.

Plan finger size around the stock and jig

Finger width, stock thickness, cutter, and indexing system must work together. Fine Woodworking’s table-saw guide uses 1/2-inch fingers as an example and describes adapting its basic jig approach for fingers from about 1/8 inch to 3/4 inch. Those are dimensions in that method, not universal limits for every jig. The guide also advises keeping joint width no greater than stock thickness.

Before cutting project parts, check the jig or template’s supported finger sizes and workpiece width, along with the cutter and any guide-bushing combination it requires. Some template systems limit both finger size and board width, and adjustment for a snug fit may be limited.

Set up and cut a test joint

  1. Confirm the system’s limits. Check the jig or template instructions for compatible machine, cutter, stock dimensions, and indexing method.
  2. Set the indexing spacing. On a table-saw jig, the key or spacer determines the spacing of successive cuts. On a router setup, follow the fixture or template’s alignment and indexing procedure.
  3. Use matching stock and settings for both parts. The two patterns must complement one another. Keep the workpiece registered consistently against the jig through each cut.
  4. Make a test joint from scrap. Assemble the pieces and assess the fit before cutting the project parts. Make any adjustment the jig permits, then test again.
  5. Cut the project pieces only after the test fits. Maintain the same registration and settings for both mating patterns.

Why narrow fingers demand careful indexing

Narrower fingers require more cuts across a given width. Small indexing errors can accumulate over those repeated cuts, leaving the last fingers out of alignment or the joint poorly fitted. Accurate registration and a test joint are therefore especially important when using fine spacing.

Safety and fit checks

  • Follow the machine, cutter, and jig manufacturer’s safety and operating instructions. Leigh’s RTJ400 documentation includes a safety chapter; consult the instructions for the exact model you use.
  • Check that the workpiece is supported and registered as the jig specifies before making repeated cuts.
  • Do not assume a template will accommodate a particular board width or finger size; verify the stated range and required cutter or guide-bushing combination.
  • Assess fit on a test piece rather than relying on an assumed universal setting. The sources describe box joints as strong but do not provide independent comparative strength measurements that support a quantified strength claim.
