Box blight is a fungal disease of box (Buxus) that causes leaves to turn brown and fall, leaving bare patches, and can produce black streaks and dieback on young stems. The fungi responsible are Calonectria pseudonaviculata and C. henricotiae, formerly grouped under the name Cylindrocladium buxicola. If you suspect it, check for the characteristic stem streaks, distinguish it from caterpillar damage and other box diseases, then act promptly: remove infected material in dry conditions, clean tools and reduce the damp, dense growth that helps the disease spread.
What box blight looks like
Box blight affects plants in the genus Buxus and may also affect other members of the Buxaceae family. Symptoms can vary with conditions, but the most useful signs to look for together are:
- Leaves turning brown and dropping, sometimes leaving bare patches in the plant.
- Black streaks on young stems, often accompanied by dieback.
- In wet conditions, white spore masses on the undersides of infected leaves.
Brown foliage alone is not enough to identify box blight: several problems can damage box. Where you are uncertain, treat the visual signs as a reason to investigate rather than a definitive diagnosis.
A simple visual check for spores
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) describes placing affected leaves in a plastic bag with a piece of moist tissue for a few days and then looking for spore masses. White masses are consistent with box blight; pink masses point instead towards Volutella blight. This is a practical clue, not a laboratory test, and it may not settle an uncertain diagnosis.

Is it box blight, Volutella or box tree caterpillar?
Check stems, leaves and the plant for signs of insects before deciding that browning is fungal blight.
| Possible problem | Signs to look for | How it differs from box blight |
|---|---|---|
| Box blight | Brown leaves that fall, bare patches, black streaks and dieback on young stems; white spore masses may appear under leaves in wet conditions. | The black streaks on young stems are a useful distinguishing sign. |
| Volutella blight | Leaf and twig death; spore masses may look pink. | RHS notes that the characteristic black streaks do not form and defoliation is not common. |
| Box tree caterpillar | Webbing, green-and-black caterpillars and curved cut-outs along chewed leaf edges. | Look for caterpillars, webbing and feeding damage rather than assuming the foliage loss is caused by a fungus. |
How to prevent box blight spreading
The fungi can be introduced on planting material and carried on tools, footwear or clothing. They also benefit from damp conditions and dense growth. Prevention therefore depends on checking plants and limiting the movement of infected leaves and debris.

- Approved for organic gardening, this fungicide is suitable for the production of organic produce and can even be used up until the day of harvest!
- Copper Fungicide effective in the control and prevention of a wide range of plant diseases. Listed common garden diseases include blight, black spot, powdery mildew peach leaf curl and more.

- Quarantine new box. Keep commercially purchased plants separate from existing box for at least four weeks before planting, and inspect them during that period. Nursery fungicide treatment may suppress infection without eliminating it, so a symptom-free plant at purchase is not a guarantee.
- Clean tools and footwear. Clean pruning tools with garden disinfectant or a mild bleach solution between areas of the garden. Take particular care when tools or footwear move between gardens.
- Keep foliage drier and more open. Avoid overhead watering and, where practical, reduce clipping frequency to improve airflow. Remove leaf litter and clippings from the canopy and around the plant base.
- Limit rain splash. Mulch can help reduce splash from soil onto foliage. RHS notes that soft mulch, such as Topbuxus Carpet, reduces splash more than hard bark mulch. Replace old mulch occasionally if infected debris may have accumulated beneath the plants.
- Avoid overly lush growth. Feed moderately; excessive nitrogen can encourage dense growth that is harder to keep open and well ventilated.
- Inspect regularly. Pay particular attention during warm, humid weather and in gardens where box blight has occurred before. No box cultivar should be treated as immune: RHS says none are highly resistant.
How to treat a box blight outbreak
RHS recommends a coordinated response rather than relying on one intervention. The scale of pruning depends on how much of the plant is affected, the value of the hedge or topiary, and whether the remaining growth can be kept open and monitored.
- Choose a dry spell. Cutting out infected growth in dry conditions helps avoid working with wet foliage and debris.
- Remove affected tissue. Cut out infected areas and remove a little beyond the visible symptoms, because infection may be present before it is obvious. Clean tools regularly as you work, and do not move from infected plants to healthy ones without cleaning them.
- Contain the debris. Bag suspect leaves and clippings instead of carrying them loose around the garden. Clear leaf litter from the plant and its base as well.
- Adjust the plant’s shape if necessary. For more extensive disease, RHS describes substantially reducing hedge height or cutting plants back severely. The right choice depends on the extent of infection and how much of the plant you are prepared to remove.
- Keep monitoring. Check the treated plants and other box in the garden for new signs. New shoots can become infected, and outbreaks can recur in damp summer or autumn weather.
RHS says box blight does not kill the roots, so a plant may regrow after being cut back rather than needing to be dug out. Regrowth is not guaranteed to remain disease-free: new shoots can be reinfected, so cutting back needs to be paired with hygiene and continued checks.

Should you spray box blight?
RHS advises avoiding fungicides wherever possible, citing potential effects on biodiversity, soil health and the wider environment. It also says fungicides are unlikely to control box blight as a stand-alone measure; they do not replace removing infected material, sanitation, reducing leaf wetness or monitoring.
Fungicide approvals and permitted uses depend on location and can change. If considering a product, check the current rules and label directions for your jurisdiction rather than relying on UK guidance elsewhere. Do not use homemade sprays: RHS describes them as unregulated and usually untested.

- This product arrives conveniently ready-to-use in a trigger sprayer bottle! To use, shake well and apply to affected plants. Please see product label for full use instructions.
How long can box blight persist?
RHS says spores can remain viable on fallen leaf litter for at least six years. This is why clearing debris and keeping infected clippings contained matter beyond the day you prune. Continue to inspect affected plants and nearby box, particularly when damp weather returns.
