On March 25, 2011, Boeing marked placement of the last steel beam on a new 300,000-square-foot interiors fabrication building in North Charleston, South Carolina. The topping-out ceremony celebrated a construction milestone; the facility was still under construction, with opening projected for the fourth quarter of 2011.
What the final-beam milestone marked
Boeing held a topping-out ceremony on March 25, 2011, after the building’s final steel beam was placed. Hundreds of construction workers and Boeing employees had signed the beam before it was raised. The milestone signified progress on the structure, not completion of the building or the start of production.
Lane Ballard, then director of Boeing’s Interiors Responsibility Center, said: “This is an exciting day for Fabrication as it puts us one step closer to producing innovative 787 interiors for the South Carolina final assembly and delivery team.” Boeing also quoted Ballard recognizing the construction workers for their work and progress on the project. Boeing’s March 25, 2011 release reported the ceremony and quotations.
Where the building was and what it was for
Boeing described the planned building as 300,000 square feet (27,871 square meters). It was located in Palmetto Commerce Park in North Charleston, about 10 miles from Boeing South Carolina’s site. The company’s Interior Responsibility Center South Carolina team was to manufacture 787 interior components there, near the operation assembling and delivering the aircraft.

Boeing said the proximity was intended to improve the efficiency of final assembly and delivery in South Carolina. The new building’s role was fabrication of interior parts; it was distinct from the nearby final-assembly and delivery operation.
Which 787 interior components Boeing planned to make
Boeing’s planned product list included stowbins, closets, partitions and class dividers, along with floor-mounted stowbins used by flight attendants. It also named overhead flight crew rests and overhead flight attendant crew rests, video-control stations, and attendant modules. These examples show that “interiors” referred to a range of cabin and crew-use components rather than a single finished cabin product.

Construction schedule and project partners
Boeing said construction began in September 2010 and was scheduled to continue through the fourth quarter of 2011, when the facility was expected to open. That opening date was a projection in the 2011 announcement, not confirmation of when the building ultimately opened. BRPH and Pattillo Construction Corporation were identified as the design-builders.
The company’s release documents the construction milestone and its plans at the time. It does not establish the facility’s current status.
