Bob Dylan’s Former Manhattan Townhouse: The Harlem Home at 265 West 139th Street

The likely subject is 265 West 139th Street on Harlem’s Strivers’ Row—not Dylan’s separate Turtle Bay townhouse. Here’s what is reported about its history, architecture and 2026 sale.

Bob Dylan’s former Manhattan townhouse most likely refers to 265 West 139th Street, a four-floor residence on Strivers’ Row in Harlem. Dylan is reported to have lived there from 1986 to 2000; the house sold for $2.8 million on June 25, 2026. It is not the separate townhouse at 242 East 49th Street in Turtle Bay, also associated with Dylan.

Where is Bob Dylan’s former townhouse?

The recently sold property is at 265 West 139th Street in Harlem, on Strivers’ Row and within the St. Nicholas Historic District. The address is important because coverage has also linked Dylan to a different Manhattan townhouse in Turtle Bay.

Harlem: 265 West 139th Street

Sotheby’s International Realty and 6sqft report that Dylan lived in the Harlem house from 1986 to 2000. 6sqft says he sold it in 2000 for $560,000. The Strivers’ Row association describes the period as 14 years of ownership; that shorthand should not be read as an independently established measurement of continuous residency.

Turtle Bay: 242 East 49th Street

Realtor.com identifies 242 East 49th Street as a separate five-story townhouse in Turtle Bay. Its account places Dylan there in the 1970s and again in the 1990s, and reports that he bought it in 1990 and sold it in 2006. Those dates and transactions belong to the Turtle Bay property, not the Harlem house.

The transactions are not a like-for-like measure of appreciation: they involve different properties and years, and the cited accounts do not establish intervening sales, renovation costs, or inflation-adjusted values.

What is known about the Harlem townhouse?

Sotheby’s sale report describes a five-bedroom residence of roughly 4,500 square feet, arranged across four floors and a cellar. It lists period moldings, restored hardwood floors, pocket doors, six decorative fireplaces, and a wood-paneled entry vestibule. These are attributed descriptions from the sale coverage, not an independent building inspection.

The closed Howard Hanna/REBNY RLS listing also describes zoned central HVAC, radiant-heated bathrooms, and a gated carport. Those are listing claims; the page cautions that listing information is not guaranteed.

What did the house sell for?

Howard Hanna’s MLS-fed listing reports that 265 West 139th Street closed on June 25, 2026, for $2.8 million. Sotheby’s reports that the property originally went on the market in 2025 with an asking price of $3 million. The asking price was not the closing price.

For historical context, 6sqft reports Dylan’s 2000 sale of the Harlem house for $560,000. That figure refers to the earlier transaction, not the Turtle Bay residence.

What is Strivers’ Row, and how is the house designed?

Strivers’ Row is a Harlem enclave of historic row houses. The neighborhood association says the north side of West 139th Street features Italian Renaissance Revival designs by Stanford White’s firm, McKim, Mead & White. Sale coverage attributes the specific townhouse at 265 West 139th Street to White and dates it to 1893.

The association says the St. Nicholas Historic District was designated in 1967 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Those dates refer to the district. The sources cited here do not establish a separate designation date for this individual townhouse, so it is most precise to say the property sits within the historic district.

Why do accounts describe two Dylan townhouses?

“Bob Dylan’s former Manhattan townhouse” is not a uniquely identifying address. The recent Harlem sale is the likely subject when the phrase accompanies the 2026 sale coverage, while the Turtle Bay home has its own, separate history. Keep the addresses, dates, features, and sale figures distinct when reading or sharing stories about either property.

Can visitors see the house?

The Strivers’ Row association says walking tours are available, but it does not identify a current operator or confirm that a tour enters or stops at 265 West 139th Street. Visitors should verify a tour’s current route and availability with its provider rather than assume the former Dylan residence is included.
