Bowl coring uses a supported curved knife to cut nested bowl forms from one turning blank, saving wood that ordinary hollowing would turn into shavings. The demonstrated method is a twice-turning workflow: core green wood, rough-turn the bowls with thick walls, dry them, then turn them to final shape. Jan Svec’s WOOD Magazine article, published March 28, 2023, shows the Oneway Easy-Core system; its measurements and operating details are examples, not universal specifications.

What bowl coring does

A bowl-coring system guides a curved knife through a blank so the cut forms the inside of one bowl and the outside of the next. Rather than hollowing each bowl separately and removing the central wood as shavings, the turner separates several nested bowls from the same piece.

The method is especially useful when the blank is valuable, highly figured, or simply worth using efficiently. It does not guarantee a particular amount of material saved: the number and size of bowls depend on the blank, the cutter geometry, and the wall thicknesses planned.

Plan the blank and nested cuts

Choose a suitable blank

Svec recommends starting with green wood and shaping a blank whose depth is roughly half its diameter for the circular-arc knives used in the example. The article’s example is 15 inches in diameter and 7½ inches deep. These are working dimensions for that setup, not a required ratio for every lathe or coring system.

  • Material: HSS blade and beech wood handle
  • Size: Total length: 22.4 inch; blade length: 9 inch; handle length:13.4 inch
  • Blade: High Speed Steel blades outlast high carbon steel and sharper (Hardness: HRC60)
  • Handle: The handle is made of wood beech. High hardness, can be used for a long time
  • Contents: 5/8 Inches Bowl Gouge for woodturning

The blank needs a fairly flat face for the demonstrated system. Svec notes that the Oneway Easy-Core cannot accommodate natural-edge blanks with large undulations. Shape the outside, mount the blank securely in a four-jaw chuck by a tenon, and face it before setting up the coring base.

Lay out the cuts before mounting a knife

Mark the intended inside diameters, rough wall thicknesses, and cutter kerfs on the blank’s face and along its depth. In Svec’s 15-inch example, two cuts with 9-inch and 11½-inch knives produce three nested bowls. The article suggests rough walls about 10% of each bowl’s diameter, leaving extra wood to accommodate drying movement and final shaping.

The demonstration uses an aftermarket cutter with a 3/8-inch kerf. Kerf width, bowl dimensions, and usable knife sizes vary with the chosen equipment and workpiece, so plan around the actual cutter rather than treating that figure as standard.

As Svec explains, “The coring knives cut circular arcs, meaning the radius of the rough-turned bowl equals one-half of the diameter.” That circular geometry is why the blank’s depth and the planned bowl diameters need to work together.

Set up and core the blank

The following setup and cutting figures describe Svec’s 2023 demonstration. Check the current instructions for your lathe and coring system before operating; do not assume these settings transfer to another machine, blank, or cutter.

  1. Seat the base on the lathe ways. Choose a base sized for the lathe’s swing capacity and align the planned kerf with the knife path.
  2. Fit the first knife and support finger. Svec begins with the smallest knife and its matching support finger. Set the cutter 1/16 inch above the blank’s centerline and position it to follow the marked kerf.
  3. Start conservatively. The article demonstrates 500 rpm, slow entry, and light feed pressure. Treat 500 rpm as a setting used for that example, not a universal speed recommendation.
  4. Advance in controlled increments. Withdraw the knife regularly to clear chips and keep the kerf from closing around the cutter. As the cut deepens, adjust and advance the support finger to support the knife.
  5. Manage vibration on large blanks. Svec recommends engaging the tailstock center for large blanks to reduce vibration. Use the support arrangement and operating procedure specified for your equipment.
  6. Repeat for the remaining bowls. After completing a cut, remove the bowl, form a tenon, and proceed with the next planned cut and appropriately sized knife.

Rough-turn, dry, and finish-turn

Once separated, rough-turn each bowl with walls thick enough to leave material for movement during drying and for final shaping. The cited article’s rough-wall guideline is about 10% of bowl diameter; it is an example for planning, not a guarantee against cracking or distortion.

Set the rough bowls aside to dry before returning them to the lathe for final turning. Svec gives a rule of thumb of about one year of air-drying per inch of wall thickness. Actual drying time and results depend on the wood and drying conditions, so that estimate should not be treated as a schedule that assures a particular moisture level or outcome.

The article mentions Anchorseal and brown-paper bags as approaches some turners use to reduce splitting. It does not establish that either works equally well for every species or climate. Follow an approach appropriate to the wood and your drying conditions, and inspect the bowls before final turning.

Choosing a bowl-coring system
