Billboard House was a temporary home built behind a rooftop advertising billboard in Polanco, Mexico City, for Scribe México’s 2013 campaign. Architect Julio Gómez Trevilla designed the 16 m² (about 172 sq ft) dwelling, and artist Cecilia Beaven stayed there for 10 days while painting the billboard’s façade. It was a one-off campaign project, not a currently established lodging service.
What was Billboard House?
Billboard House combined an advertising surface with a compact place to live and work. Scribe México commissioned the project, which placed the residence behind the canvas face of a rooftop billboard. Designboom lists its site as Alejandro Dumas 123 in Polanco, Mexico City, and dates the project to February–March 2013. Designboom’s project listing identifies Julio Gómez Trevilla as its designer and records an area of 16 m².
The concept treated the billboard as more than a place to display an advertisement: its outward-facing canvas became the façade Beaven painted, while a small interior space was fitted behind it. Contemporary accounts describe a short-term artist residency tied directly to the campaign, rather than a permanent home or public accommodation.
How the dwelling was built and arranged
New Atlas described a lightweight structure attached behind a typical billboard, with a steel support frame and walls made from wooden chipboard sheets lined with plastic. The design included a concealed entrance in the billboard face, a balcony at the rear, and a tower above the dwelling to accommodate plumbing. New Atlas’s 2013 account also describes a separate wooden roof or terrace that offered shade and outdoor space. The reported 16 m² (about 172 sq ft) living area contained a kitchen, dressing and closet space, a bathroom and shower, and a work desk. Furniture was largely mobile, and the bed folded against a wall to free floor area. Small windows and a transparent wall section with a curtain brought daylight inside. These are descriptions from 2013 coverage, not an independent assessment of building-code compliance, safety, ventilation performance, or long-term durability.
Who stayed there, and what happened during the campaign?
Beaven was the first reported resident. New Atlas says she stayed for 10 days while painting the billboard mural and incorporated about 50 requests submitted through Twitter. Designboom also describes the mural project as a 10-day effort. The request count and activity details are New Atlas’s reporting, not independently verified production records.

New Atlas also reported performances on a makeshift stage beneath the billboard, including a stand-up comedian and the rock band Molotov. The campaign therefore connected the temporary studio-residence above with public-facing art and events below.
Is Billboard House still standing or available to stay in?
The available accounts establish the project’s 2013 campaign, but they do not establish whether the structure remains in place, is occupied, or is open to visitors today. New Atlas reported in 2013 that Scribe had not revealed further plans at that time; that does not confirm what happened after 2013. It is most accurate to describe Billboard House as a historical project and not as a bookable residence or ongoing artist-housing program.

What the project demonstrates—and what it does not
Billboard House is a striking example of using an advertising structure as both a public-facing surface and the enclosure for a temporary creative workspace. Its reported details show design responses to a tight footprint: folding and wheeled furniture, a compact work area, daylight openings, a rear balcony, and an outdoor terrace. But the published accounts provide no measured data on structural performance, thermal comfort, privacy, ventilation, accessibility, or suitability for sustained habitation. The project is best understood as a short residency integrated into an advertising campaign, not evidence that billboard structures generally make safe or practical housing.
