BILCO Doors in Brighton’s Erger’s Pond Station: How Access Design Supports Colorado Water Management

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Brighton’s water-management solution was the Erger’s Pond Augmentation Station, not the access doors alone. The project used two raw-water pump stations beside a city-owned reservoir near the South Platte River: one pump fills the reservoir and the other returns water to the river. Fourteen aluminum floor doors provide access to the wet wells above the submersible pumps so operators can remove, maintain and eventually replace that equipment.

The doors are therefore a maintainability and safety component of a larger pumping project. The project scope and figures below come primarily from The BILCO Company’s Erger’s Pond case study, with trade context from WaterWorld and Wastewater Digest. BILCO’s product descriptions and project statistics are manufacturer-reported rather than independent performance-test results.

Which Colorado project does the headline describe?

The project identified in available documentation is Brighton, Colorado’s Erger’s Pond Augmentation Station. It should not be confused with a separate BILCO case study about the Canyons Water Tank in Parker, Colorado. Parker’s project involved a 5-million-gallon potable-water tank and a 24-inch supply pipeline; those figures do not describe Brighton and are not evidence about the augmentation station.

Brighton’s station was built to support management of raw water associated with a city-owned reservoir next to the South Platte River. The BILCO case study describes the city as having more than 41,000 residents and about 15 inches of annual rainfall. Those numbers explain why dependable water infrastructure matters locally, but they do not by themselves measure a supply deficit or prove how much water the station adds.

What the augmentation station does

Two pump stations, two directions of flow

The station comprises two raw-water pump stations. One pump moves water into the reservoir. The other pumps water back into the South Platte River. In practical terms, the arrangement gives the city permanent infrastructure for operating an augmentation system rather than relying on temporary pumping arrangements.

WaterWorld’s account adds that the installation includes permanent pumping infrastructure and wet wells. A wet well is the below-grade chamber in which submersible pumping equipment is installed. Because the pumps sit below the access surface, the station needs engineered openings large enough for crews to reach and remove them.

Why permanent infrastructure mattered

The project engineer quoted in BILCO’s case study, Jake Hebert, said: “Construction of permanent infrastructure to facilitate pumping operations was necessary and beneficial to the city.” This statement describes the station’s value: a durable civil and mechanical installation makes recurring pumping operations possible. It does not claim that the floor doors create water, increase rainfall or independently resolve regional supply constraints.

What the 14 BILCO floor doors do

Access to wet wells and submersible pumps

The station uses 14 floor doors over the wet wells. When a pump requires inspection, repair or replacement, personnel can open the corresponding door and use the access point to reach the equipment below. The doors also preserve access for future replacement, an important distinction from an opening designed only for initial construction.

Hebert’s statement in the BILCO case study is specific: “The BILCO doors were preferred by the operations department and are used to access the wet wells.” It is a manufacturer-published project quotation, not an independently collected interview presented by a third party.

Access is part of reliability

A pump station can be hydraulically capable yet difficult to operate if its equipment cannot be reached safely. Floor openings connect the operating surface to the wet wells while keeping the station closed during normal operation. Their contribution is maintainability: crews have a defined route to equipment instead of having to redesign the structure or improvise access when a pump is out of service.

Design element What the case study says Why it matters at a wet well
Door material Aluminum Provides a lightweight access panel suitable for a permanently wet infrastructure setting; the case study does not state an alloy, thickness or structural load rating.
Hardware Type 316 Specified for corrosion resistance. The case study does not state exposure concentration, service life or a corrosion-test standard.
Lift assistance Engineered lift assistance for one-hand, counterbalanced operation Reduces the effort required to open a panel. The documented source does not state the opening force or the operator’s required training.
Hold-open behavior Automatic hold-open arms Keeps an opened door secured while work is performed. The source does not state wind rating, locking details or the release procedure.
Quantity 14 floor doors Indicates multiple wet-well access points across the station. Individual opening dimensions and locations are not stated.

How access supports pump maintenance

  1. Identify the affected wet well. Operations staff determine which pump or wet-well compartment requires attention using the station’s operating procedures. The project documentation does not specify the control system or diagnostic method.
  2. Isolate the equipment. Before opening a floor door, the pump and associated systems must be placed in the condition required by the facility’s safety procedures. The case study does not publish Brighton’s isolation, lockout or confined-space program, so those details should not be inferred.
  3. Open the designated floor door. The engineered lift assistance is intended to permit one-hand, counterbalanced opening, while the automatic hold-open arm secures the panel in the open position.
  4. Reach the submersible pump. The opening provides the route for maintenance access and for removing equipment from the wet well. The documentation confirms access and future replacement capability but does not state the lifting equipment, pump weight or removal time.
  5. Restore the opening after work. Once the pump work is complete, the door is closed and the wet well is returned to its operating condition under the site’s procedures. The published case study does not specify gasket, drainage, traffic-loading or testing details.

This sequence explains the practical value of a properly selected floor door without overstating it. The door makes the pump maintainable; the pumps and associated civil works perform the water-transfer function.

Why wet-well door selection deserves engineering attention

Corrosion exposure

Wet wells combine moisture with an environment that can be demanding for metal components. BILCO’s selection of aluminum and type 316 hardware is presented as a corrosion-resistant solution for this project. Designers still need to check the actual water chemistry, atmospheric exposure, cleaning agents and interfaces with surrounding materials. No project-specific chemistry or service-life calculation is published in the case study.

Opening size and structural loading

The door must be large enough for the pump and lifting path, while the surrounding slab and frame must support the loads expected at the station. Brighton’s case study does not state opening dimensions, live-load classification, point loads or pump weights. Those values must come from the project’s drawings and equipment schedule rather than from the door count alone.

Safe retention in the open position

An automatic hold-open arm addresses one hazard: an open panel that could fall or move while a worker is below or beside it. The published material does not describe the arm’s rating, inspection interval or behavior in high winds. A facility specification should require those details if they are critical to the site.

Human factors

Counterbalanced, one-hand operation can make routine access less strenuous than lifting an unsupported cover. It does not eliminate the need for site-specific training, fall protection, atmospheric testing or confined-space controls. The station’s safety program is not described in the available project account, so those requirements should be confirmed with the owner and engineer.

What the doors did not solve

It is inaccurate to say that installing BILCO doors solved Brighton’s water-resource issue. Doors do not augment a reservoir, transfer water or operate a pump. The water-management intervention was the augmentation station’s pumping and permanent civil infrastructure. The doors solved a narrower but essential problem: how operators would reach the wet wells and remove equipment throughout the station’s service life.

This distinction matters when evaluating project outcomes. A headline about doors can make an access product sound like the principal water treatment. The evidence supports a more precise conclusion: the doors enabled safe, maintainable access to the machinery that performs the pumping operation.

How to evaluate a similar commercial floor access door

Owners planning a pump station, lift station or other wet-well facility can use Brighton’s documented design priorities as a checklist, while obtaining project-specific engineering data before purchase.

  • Confirm the equipment path: match clear opening dimensions to the largest pump, guide rail, lifting device and replacement component.
  • Specify the design load: document pedestrian, maintenance, vehicle or other loads on the finished surface; do not assume a rating from the material name.
  • Match materials to exposure: identify water chemistry, humidity, cleaning products and dissimilar-metal interfaces, then specify compatible frame, hardware and fasteners.
  • Define operating force: require the manufacturer to state opening force, counterbalance behavior and adjustment requirements.
  • Detail hold-open protection: specify how the arm locks, how it releases and what inspection is required.
  • Coordinate safety systems: integrate the door with fall protection, confined-space entry, lockout and lifting plans prepared by the owner’s safety team.
  • Plan for replacement: verify that the opening and lifting route remain usable when the original pump is removed years after commissioning.
  • Record maintenance information: keep door model, hardware, seals, adjustment points and inspection intervals in the facility’s asset records.

Evidence boundaries and the separate Parker case

The Brighton figures in this article come from a BILCO case study whose publication date is not stated in the available citation. WaterWorld and Wastewater Digest provide trade context about the permanent pump stations and wet wells. Neither the case study nor the trade descriptions supplied here establish hydraulic capacity, annual water savings, operating cost, pump model, construction schedule or measured reliability improvement.

The Parker Canyons Water Tank case study is useful only as a location check. Its 5-million-gallon tank and 24-inch pipeline belong to Parker, not Brighton, and should not be used to describe Erger’s Pond. Likewise, statewide supply-gap figures mentioned in that separate case study are not included here because the underlying state documents were not verified.

Bottom line for project teams

Brighton’s Erger’s Pond Augmentation Station addressed water-management needs with two raw-water pump stations positioned by the reservoir and South Platte River. Fourteen aluminum floor doors with type 316 hardware, lift assistance and automatic hold-open arms gave operators access to the wet wells and submersible pumps. The doors’ contribution was dependable, safer maintenance access and future pump replacement—not water creation or hydraulic augmentation. For any comparable facility, specify the door from the pump-removal path, structural loading, corrosion exposure and site-safety plan outward.
