In BILCO’s account of The Gordy, a renovated warehouse theater in downtown Houston, seven acoustical smoke vents were selected specifically to limit exterior-noise intrusion. The project is a useful example, but the vent choice remains a site-specific design decision rather than a universal theater requirement.
The project figures and performance claims in this article come from BILCO’s published case study and product documents. The exact Building Design + Construction article named in the topic could not be confirmed from the available publication record, so the correspondence between that article and BILCO’s case study should be verified before citing it as the same source.

Why acoustical smoke vents matter in theaters
A smoke vent has a life-safety job: when released, it provides a roof opening intended to help remove smoke and heat. A theater also has a demanding acoustic environment. Quiet dialogue, music, and audience concentration can be disrupted by sound entering through a roof assembly, particularly when a conventional hatch uses relatively light covers or uninsulated construction.

An acoustical smoke vent addresses that second problem by adding mass, insulation, and weather-sealing features while retaining the required release and opening functions. It does not make a theater soundproof, and an acoustic rating does not prove that every sound at a particular site will be inaudible. The relevant question is whether the vent’s tested performance is suitable for the actual noise sources, room criteria, roof construction, and code strategy.

What noise sources must be considered
- Road traffic, emergency sirens, and nearby loading or service activity.
- Aircraft or rail noise that reaches the roof from above.
- Heavy rain striking the roof and vent covers.
- Mechanical equipment, wind, and other exterior sources that may be noticeable during quiet performances.
The same vent can be appropriate in one theater and unnecessary in another. A building set back from major noise sources may meet its acoustic goals with a standard listed smoke vent, while a downtown venue beside busy streets may need the added attenuation.
The Gordy renovation: what BILCO reports
BILCO’s case study, “New Houston Theater Limits Noise Intrusion With BILCO’s Acoustical Smoke Vents”, describes The Gordy in downtown Houston. BILCO reports that the project renovated a former warehouse in a $35 million undertaking covering 66,850 square feet. The work included an addition and three stages. The largest venue has 251 seats, and BILCO lists maximum combined occupancy across the three stages as 606.
According to the case study, the design team faced concerns about exterior noise and used seven acoustical smoke vents. BILCO quotes Bruno Cardenas of Charcoalblue: “With the acoustical hatches, you will not hear rain, you won’t hear traffic. With a regular smoke hatch, you will hear sirens and other external noises.” That is a participant’s description of the project objective and perceived benefit, not a published laboratory measurement of sound levels in the completed theater. It should not be read as a promise that an acoustical hatch eliminates all outside sound.
How to cite the project accurately
The dollar value, floor area, stage count, seating, occupancy, and seven-vent quantity should be attributed to BILCO because those figures are manufacturer-published. They are not independently verified figures in the available project account. If a specification, planning document, or article requires the original Building Design + Construction reference, confirm the project identity and publication details separately.

How an acoustical smoke vent differs from a regular smoke hatch
Both products must be evaluated first as smoke-vent assemblies, including their listing, release temperature, structural capacity, opening behavior, weather protection, and compatibility with the fire-protection design. The acoustical version adds construction and tested ratings intended to reduce airborne and rain noise when the vent is closed.
| Design question | Acoustical smoke vent | Conventional smoke hatch or vent |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Smoke venting plus reduced exterior-noise transmission | Smoke venting; acoustic enhancement may not be provided |
| Sound performance | BILCO publishes STC 50, OITC 46, and an ISO 140-18 rainfall sound rating for Type ACDSV | Comparable acoustic values are not established here and must be obtained for the selected product |
| Construction example | 14-gauge galvanneal steel covers with 4-inch mineral-wool insulation, according to BILCO literature | Construction varies by manufacturer and model |
| Release and opening | Automatic release using a UL-listed 165°F fusible link; gas springs open and lock the covers | Varies by listed assembly and control arrangement |
| Project decision | Use where exterior or rainfall noise threatens room criteria and the assembly meets life-safety requirements | Use where acoustic performance is not required and the listed assembly satisfies the design |
Sound Transmission Class (STC) is commonly used for interior airborne sound transmission, while Outdoor-Indoor Transmission Class (OITC) is intended to reflect exterior noise spectra. Their values should be treated as product-test ratings under the applicable test methods, not as a direct prediction of sound pressure inside a particular auditorium. Flanking paths through the roof, curbs, ducts, doors, glazing, and wall assemblies can dominate the finished room’s result.
BILCO Type ACDSV: published characteristics

Published standard double-leaf sizes
The same BILCO literature lists these standard double-leaf sizes:
| Nominal size | Availability in the cited literature |
|---|---|
| 48 × 48 inches | Listed |

| 60 × 96 inches | Listed |
| 66 × 144 inches | Listed |
| 72 × 72 inches | Listed |
Confirm dimensions, curb details, lead times, options, and current catalog status with BILCO before placing a requirement on drawings. Roof structure and equipment layouts may make a listed size impractical even when its acoustic rating is attractive.
How to specify an acoustical vent for a theater renovation
1. Establish the smoke-vent objective
Start with the code analysis and fire-protection design. Identify the required vent area, number and location of openings, release sequence, manual or automatic controls, and interfaces with the fire-alarm strategy. The architect, fire-protection engineer, structural engineer, and authority having jurisdiction should agree on the basis of design before acoustic features are selected.
2. Set room and site acoustic criteria
Document the performance target for the auditorium, rehearsal room, lobby, or stage support area. Identify the dominant exterior sources and their operating times. A theater beside a highway may need a different approach from one beneath an aircraft route. Include rainfall if roof noise is a known complaint. Ask the acoustician to evaluate the entire roof and ceiling assembly rather than treating the vent as an isolated component.

3. Compare the vent’s rated performance with the target
Request the current test reports or certification documents behind the quoted STC, OITC, and rainfall values. Check that the tested configuration matches the specified size, glazing or infill conditions, insulation, seals, and curb detail. Ratings can change with substitutions, field modifications, or an installation that bypasses the tested perimeter seal.
4. Coordinate structure and weatherproofing
Verify roof openings, curb dimensions, framing, snow and wind loads, drainage, membrane transitions, and flashing. The manufacturer’s statement that the covers are designed to open against a 10 psf snow/wind load does not replace project-specific structural calculations. Confirm that the roof assembly can support the vent and that maintenance access will not compromise the acoustic or weather seal.
5. Select the release and control arrangement
Coordinate the 165°F fusible link and any motor, winch, or electric-release option with the smoke-control sequence. Determine what happens during normal operation, alarm, power loss, testing, and reset. The gas springs must be able to open the covers under the specified environmental condition, and the assembly must remain accessible for inspection without blocking stage functions or audience circulation.
6. Inspect installation and commission the system
Require installation to follow the current manufacturer instructions and the approved details. Inspect insulation continuity, seals, fasteners, curb alignment, flashing, and clear opening. Test release and opening functions with the fire-protection team, record results, and establish an inspection schedule. If the project has a stringent noise target, consider field acoustic verification after other roof and ceiling work is complete; product ratings alone cannot reveal flanking paths or construction defects.

When a standard smoke vent may be the better choice
Acoustical venting adds construction, coordination, and cost considerations, so it should not be specified automatically for every theater. BILCO’s case study of a separate Utah theater reports that the project selected standard motorized smoke vents because acoustical venting was not needed at that location: “BILCO Smoke Vents Help Reduce Fire Risk at New Utah Theater.” The example illustrates a decision based on site conditions, not a rule that one vent type is always superior.
- Choose an acoustical assembly when exterior or rainfall noise threatens documented room criteria and the assembly can satisfy the smoke-vent design.
- Choose a standard listed vent when the acoustic assessment shows no meaningful benefit, provided the product meets the project’s life-safety, structural, weather, and control requirements.
- Revisit the decision if the site, stage use, roof assembly, or performance expectations change during design.
Limitations, verification, and common mistakes
Assuming a rating guarantees silence
STC 50 or OITC 46 describes a tested product characteristic. It does not mean that a theater will experience no sirens, rain, or traffic. Sound can enter through adjacent roof areas, penetrations, ductwork, doors, walls, and ceiling joints.
Using a product value without its conditions
Carry the model, size, construction, test method, and installation assumptions into the specification. Do not transfer a rating from one configuration to another without confirmation.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Treating listings as universal approval
UL 793 and UL 790 Class A references are product information published by BILCO. The design team still must verify the edition of each applicable code, local amendments, roof classification, fire-alarm interface, structural loads, and authority requirements.
Ignoring maintenance
Smoke vents are life-safety equipment. Keep access clear, inspect fusible links and operating components as required, and document functional tests. A roof hatch that is acoustically effective but inaccessible for inspection is not a complete design solution.
Failing to confirm current information
Model availability, dimensions, control options, and technical documentation can change. Obtain the current Type ACDSV data and installation instructions from BILCO and coordinate them with the project design team before procurement.
Quick Recap
Practical decision checklist
- Has the fire-protection engineer defined the required smoke-vent function and release sequence?
- Has an acoustician identified measurable room criteria and dominant exterior noise sources?
- Does the proposed configuration have current documentation for STC, OITC, and rainfall performance?
- Do the size, curb, structure, snow, wind, membrane, and flashing details work together?
- Are motor, winch, or electric-release controls coordinated with the fire alarm and emergency procedures?
- Can installers preserve insulation, seals, and tested construction?
- Is there a documented inspection, testing, and maintenance plan?
- Has the team confirmed that acoustical venting is actually needed at this site rather than assuming every theater requires it?
