BILCO ACDSV Automatic Smoke Vent: Sound Ratings, Sizes and Specification Facts

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BILCO’s Type ACDSV is an acoustical automatic smoke vent for buildings that need roof-level smoke relief without making the interior unnecessarily vulnerable to exterior noise. BILCO developed it for spaces such as auditoriums, concert halls and theaters, and publishes OITC 46, STC 50 and a 37.5 dB ISO 140-18 rainfall sound rating. Those figures, along with the vent’s fire-release mechanism, structural ratings, sizes and listings, are manufacturer claims that should be checked against the current project submittal before procurement.

What the ACDSV is and why BILCO developed it

Type ACDSV is a double-leaf automatic smoke vent with acoustical construction in the covers and curb. Its purpose is to provide a roof opening for smoke-control or smoke-ventilation designs while reducing transmission of traffic, aircraft, rain and other exterior sound into occupied rooms. BILCO specifically names auditoriums, concert halls and theaters, where background noise can interfere with performances, speech intelligibility and recording.

BILCO’s launch announcement is dated January 27, 2020. It says the new vent was developed for locations where exterior noise intrusion is undesirable and describes mineral-wool insulation, a high-density sound mat, heavier-gauge steel for the curb and cover liner, revised cover gasketing, gas-spring lift assistance and a center-mounted gas traction spring.

The announcement quotes Michael Toohey, identified as BILCO’s General Manager, saying: “Our new Model ACDV features a number of upgrades and improvements over the Model ACDSH it replaces, yet still offers similar pricing and installation ease.” The quoted announcement uses the model string “ACDV,” while BILCO’s product page and catalog identify the product as ACDSV. Treat that as a wording inconsistency in the historical announcement, not as evidence of a separate current model; ask BILCO to confirm the designation on the submittal.

Published acoustical performance

BILCO presents three different sound measures because a roof vent can encounter several types of noise. OITC emphasizes lower-frequency outdoor noise, STC is a general airborne-sound rating, and ISO 140-18 addresses rainfall sound transmission. They are not interchangeable scores, and none by itself predicts the sound level in a finished room.

Measure BILCO-published result What it addresses Qualification
OITC 46 Outdoor-indoor transmission, with particular relevance to lower-frequency sources such as road traffic and aircraft Manufacturer figure from BILCO literature
STC 50 General airborne sound transmission through the tested assembly Manufacturer figure from BILCO literature
ISO 140-18 rainfall sound 37.5 dB Sound generated by rain striking the assembly BILCO says this is nearly a 9 percent improvement over its previous four-cover smoke-vent models; the underlying independent report was not identified

These ratings apply to the assembly BILCO describes, not automatically to every roof build-up. Curb connections, flashing, adjacent roofing, interior finishes, ductwork and other flanking paths can dominate the acoustic result. An acoustical consultant should therefore review the complete roof and ceiling construction when a project has a strict sound-isolation target. Request the current test documentation, test specimen description and installation limitations with the submittal rather than treating the summary ratings as a field guarantee.

Cover, curb and hardware construction

BILCO’s guide specification describes covers made from 14-gauge galvannealed steel. The covers include 4 inches of mineral-wool insulation. The curb is described as 12 inches high with 4-inch fiberboard insulation. The launch material additionally refers to mineral wool and a high-density sound mat in the covers and curb, heavier-gauge steel for the curb and cover liner, and a revised gasketing system. Because those descriptions come from different documents, the current project submittal should control the exact layer sequence and materials.

The product page identifies PVC gaskets, stainless-steel hinge pins and corrosion-resistant hardware. A positive hold/release latch keeps both leaves closed until the release device operates. The latch housing is mounted at the curb so personnel can reach it from the roof when resetting the vent. Manual pull-release cables are provided on both the interior and exterior sides, allowing a deliberate release when the design or emergency procedure calls for it.

Acoustical seals are only effective when the leaves close squarely and the gaskets remain continuous. Roof trades should protect the curb, avoid fasteners or sealants that interfere with the leaves, and follow the manufacturer’s installation drawings for flashing and membrane transitions.

How the automatic opening sequence works

  1. Normal closed condition: The positive latch holds the two covers shut. The insulated covers, curb and gaskets form the closed acoustic and weather barrier.
  2. Heat release: A UL-listed fusible link rated at 165°F (74°C) releases the latch when the link reaches its rated temperature. This is a heat-operated mechanism; smoke-detector or fire-alarm initiation requires the optional electric-release configuration.
  3. Assisted opening: Gas springs lift the covers and are specified to open them against a 10 psf (49 kg/m²) snow or wind load. Integral dampers control the rate of movement, and the springs lock the covers in the open position.
  4. Alternative release and controls: Manual pull cables can release the latch from inside or outside. The catalog also lists a motor with push-button control station, winch operation for remote opening and closing, and electric release for smoke-detector or fire-alarm activation. Confirm which combination is available for the selected model and project.
  5. Reset: After inspection and any required corrective work, the roof-level latch housing is used to reset the covers. Resetting should follow BILCO’s current operation and maintenance instructions; do not substitute an unapproved fusible link or hardware.

BILCO states a gas-spring durability of 50,000 cycles. That figure is a manufacturer specification, so the maintenance plan should still account for environmental exposure, seal wear, corrosion and any change in opening force.

Control choices and coordination points

A basic installation can rely on the fusible-link release, while a smoke-control sequence may require an electrically initiated release or remote operation. The catalog’s motor push-button station, winch and electric-release options have different wiring, access, testing and control-panel implications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Coordinate electric-release wiring with the fire-alarm or smoke-control engineer and identify the power source, supervision and reset sequence.
  • Locate a push-button station where authorized personnel can operate it without creating an unintended opening hazard.
  • For a winch, confirm the route, mounting, closing procedure and whether remote closing is permitted by the smoke-control design.
  • Keep the roof-level latch housing and manual cables accessible after insulation, pavers, screens and other rooftop work are installed.
  • Document whether the project requires one vent or multiple vents and how each opening is identified in the emergency sequence.

How to specify and source an ACDSV

  1. Establish the design objective. Define the required smoke-vent or smoke-control function, clear opening area, acoustic target and operating sequence before selecting a model.
  2. Select a nominal size. Compare the five catalog models with the engineer’s required area, roof grid, structural framing and access paths. Use the latest BILCO drawing for curb and clear-opening dimensions.
  3. Check acoustic interfaces. Review the complete roof, ceiling and curb assembly. Confirm whether the project needs OITC, STC, rainfall performance or all three, and obtain current supporting test documentation.
  4. Check loads and weathering. Compare site wind uplift, snow, maintenance live load, seismic conditions where applicable, membrane type, flashing details and corrosion exposure with the selected construction.
  5. Choose the release and controls. Decide between fusible-link operation, manual cables, motorized push-button operation, winch operation and electric release. Make the choice explicit in the control diagram and life-safety narrative.
  6. Verify listings and approvals. Request the current UL information, installation instructions and any authority-having-jurisdiction requirements. Manufacturer statements about UL 793 and UL 790 Class A should be confirmed for the exact configuration.
  7. Obtain the current submittal. BILCO’s product resources include specifications, submittal drawings, CAD, BIM, installation information and operation-and-maintenance documents. Have the supplier or representative confirm model, size, options, lead time and revisions in writing.
  8. Coordinate installation and turnover. Protect the acoustic seals during roofing, test the release and controls as required by the project, record the installed fusible-link type, and give the owner the reset and maintenance instructions.

Inspection and maintenance considerations

Maintenance personnel should inspect the vent in accordance with the current BILCO instructions and the building’s smoke-control program. Practical inspection points include unobstructed leaf movement, intact PVC gaskets, secure hinge pins, corrosion on galvannealed steel and hardware, gas-spring condition, damper action, latch engagement, manual-cable operation and the condition of the fusible link.

Do not assume that any 165°F link is interchangeable. The published material does not establish a replacement part number, cross-brand compatibility or a marketplace source. Replacement components should be identified through BILCO or the authorized project supply chain and matched to the exact assembly.

After roof work, verify that membrane, coatings, insulation, snow guards or rooftop equipment have not reduced the clear opening or blocked the latch housing, cables or control hardware. Record each functional test, including whether the covers open fully, remain locked open and reset correctly.

What the published information does—and does not—establish

The ACDSV’s sound ratings, load values, materials, cycle figure and listing statements come from BILCO’s launch announcement, product page, catalog and guide specification. They describe what BILCO reports for its product. The available material does not provide an independent laboratory comparison, field-acoustic study, jurisdiction-specific code review, current inventory confirmation or proof of availability through a particular retailer.

For that reason, the responsible selection process is to use BILCO’s current submittal and have the project’s architect, structural engineer, fire-protection engineer and acoustical consultant verify the parts relevant to their disciplines. The historical 2020 announcement is useful background, but current dimensions, options, certifications and availability should always be confirmed before the vent is written into a purchase order or final specification.
