For most buyers, the Xiaomi Outdoor Camera BW500 is the best wire-free choice, while the AW300 is the better value if you already have outdoor power. Choose the BW300 for a smaller, lower-cost battery installation, the BW400 Pro Set for a solar-first package, and the CW500 Dual when one device must cover two directions.

1. Xiaomi Outdoor Camera BW500: best overall wire-free choice
The BW500 is the strongest all-round recommendation when running power to a driveway, entrance, garden or outbuilding is difficult. Xiaomi lists 2.5K video, a 136-degree field of view, IP67 protection, full-colour night vision up to 10 metres, a 10,000mAh battery, 8GB of built-in eMMC storage and person, vehicle and animal detection.
Its wide view is useful for covering a gate or driveway, but a wider image also makes distant faces and number plates smaller. Resolution alone does not make it a dedicated licence-plate camera.

Battery life: do not treat 180 days as a guarantee
Xiaomi advertises up to 180 days of battery life under a limited scenario of no more than 20 triggered 10-second recordings per day. A busy driveway, frequent alerts, weak Wi-Fi, cold weather or repeated night illumination can reduce that figure substantially. If the camera will see constant traffic, a wired model is usually the more predictable choice.
The optional 5W solar panel can reduce charging, but it does not make the BW500 independent of sunlight. Shade, panel orientation, winter conditions and high recording demand still matter.
Buy it if: you need a wire-free camera, want local built-in storage and can accept periodic charging or add solar.

2. Xiaomi Solar Outdoor Camera BW400 Pro Set: best solar-oriented package
The BW400 Pro Set is the more convenient option for buyers who specifically want a solar package rather than a camera followed by a separate panel purchase. Xiaomi’s catalogue lists it as an outdoor-camera product, and European Xiaomi stores sell a set containing the camera and receiver.
That recommendation comes with an important qualification: resolution, storage, operating range and included accessories must be checked on the local product page. Regional bundle contents are not necessarily identical.
Buy it if: the mounting position receives dependable sunlight and the local set includes the receiver and accessories you need.
Skip it if: the camera will sit in deep shade or you need specifications and compatibility that the local listing does not clearly document.
Check the global catalogue and the relevant regional Xiaomi store listing.
3. Xiaomi Outdoor Camera BW300: best value wire-free model
The BW300 is a sensible choice for a front path, side gate, balcony or small yard where 2K video is sufficient. It has a 4,900mAh battery, IP67 protection, full-colour night vision, Xiaomi Home integration, local/cloud storage options and support for an optional 5W solar panel.

It is less ambitious than the BW500: the resolution and battery capacity are lower, and the smaller model is less attractive for a large or busy driveway. Xiaomi’s regional information also qualifies human recognition: in some markets, that feature may require a paid Pro Mi Cloud membership.
Do not equate “AI detection” with “all AI features are free.” Check the features and cloud terms shown in the Xiaomi Home app for your country.
Buy it if: you want a lower-cost battery camera for a relatively small, moderate-traffic area.
Skip it if: you need the BW500’s wider view, larger battery or built-in storage, or you want to avoid any subscription-linked AI feature.

4. Xiaomi Outdoor Camera AW300: best low-cost wired option
If outdoor power is available, the AW300 avoids the central compromise of battery cameras: runtime uncertainty. It records in 2K from a 3MP sensor, supports microSD cards up to 256GB, uses H.265 encoding, includes a 3-metre power cable and offers two-way audio, focus-zone detection, audible and visual alarms, and full-colour night vision using white and infrared illumination.

Its IP66 rating means it is dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets, but it is not the same as IP67 temporary-immersion protection. Xiaomi also specifies installation orientation; do not simply turn the AW300 upside down to change its view.
Buy it if: you have a safe outdoor power route, want microSD recording and prefer low maintenance.

5. CW300, CW400 and CW500 Dual: regional models to verify carefully
CW300
Xiaomi lists the CW300 as an outdoor model, while regional material describes IP67 protection, battery operation, full-colour night vision and optional 5W solar charging. However, storage, AI terms and exact package contents should be checked against the model’s own local product page or manual. Do not borrow BW300 specifications simply because the names are similar.
CW400
The CW400 appears in Xiaomi regional stores and is a candidate for a higher-resolution wired installation. The available authoritative material does not establish a complete, consistent specification set, so it should not be ranked definitively above the AW300 without checking the local manual and product page.
CW500 Dual
The CW500 Dual is best considered a separate multi-view option. It may suit a corner, driveway entrance or two adjacent directions where one dual-camera device is preferable to two single cameras. Verify the exact camera arrangement, pan/tilt behaviour, storage, hub or receiver requirements and recording behaviour locally. One device may simplify mounting, but it can also use more bandwidth and create more complicated app or storage behaviour.

These models are listed in Xiaomi’s global catalogue; European store listings provide useful evidence of regional sales but not universal availability.
Wired or battery: make this decision first
Choose wired when: the camera will face a high-traffic driveway, you want long operating periods without charging, or continuous recording is important. The AW300 and regional CW models are the more natural starting points.
Choose battery when: there is no convenient outlet, the location is used intermittently, or drilling and cable routing would be disruptive. The BW300 and BW500 are easier to place, but event frequency directly affects runtime.
Choose solar when: the panel can receive reliable sunlight for much of the year. Solar reduces maintenance; it does not eliminate the effects of shade, winter conditions or heavy recording.

Video quality and night vision
Use resolution as a secondary criterion. The BW500’s 2.5K image and 136-degree view are useful, but a wide angle can reduce distant detail. The BW300 and AW300 offer 2K, with the AW300 using a 3MP sensor. Lighting, mounting height, compression, motion and distance often matter more than a small resolution difference.
Infrared night vision normally produces a monochrome image. Full-colour night vision generally relies on visible LEDs or enough ambient light. White light can reveal more colour detail, but it may disturb neighbours, attract attention or affect wildlife. Xiaomi’s advertised 10-metre BW500 night-vision distance and detection distances for models such as the AW300 are manufacturer or test figures, not guarantees of identification-quality footage at that distance.
Weather ratings: IP66 is not IP67
- IP66: dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets.
- IP67: dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion under specified test conditions.
Neither rating guarantees immunity to condensation, salt air, chemicals, direct sprinkler impact, poor cable entries or incorrect mounting. Follow the installation instructions, keep connectors protected, and seal wall penetrations properly. A camera’s rating does not automatically make every plug, cable joint or hole in the wall weatherproof.
Storage, cloud plans and continuous recording
Storage is one of the biggest differences between a convenient camera and a dependable security record.
- AW300: supports microSD cards up to 256GB and offers event-cloud storage. Xiaomi says a free three-month rolling cloud-storage period may follow activation, with further cloud storage available at extra cost; this is region-dependent.
- BW500: includes 8GB of eMMC storage. Xiaomi claims up to 40 days of playback under a specified recording pattern, not unlimited retention.
- BW300 and other models: storage and cloud terms must be checked by exact model and country.
Xiaomi’s Home Secure FAQ says the basic home-surveillance system records a 9-second motion clip with a five-minute interval between recordings. Continuous recording requires a supported SD card or a Xiaomi Home Secure subscription. Subscription prices and service availability vary by regional cluster.
Local storage can avoid recurring cloud costs, but it is not a backup: a stolen or damaged camera can take its card or built-in storage with it. Use a high-endurance card where supported, periodically play back recordings, and download important clips.

Do not promise “no subscription required” without qualification. Local recording may not require a cloud plan, while cloud history, remote features or particular AI functions may remain paid or region-limited.

AI alerts: useful, but not infallible
Supported Xiaomi models can offer person, vehicle, animal or package detection, focus zones, sensitivity controls, sirens and flashing lights. These features can reduce unnecessary notifications, but they do not replace careful camera placement.
False alerts can come from trees, shadows, insects, headlights, rain, snow and passing traffic. Missed or delayed alerts can result from darkness, occlusion, poor Wi-Fi, a bad camera angle or movement outside the selected detection zone. Xiaomi says the BW500 uses a 1.2 TOPS AI chip and identifies people, vehicles and animals; these are manufacturer claims, not independent accuracy measurements.
Wi-Fi and installation requirements
- Place the camera temporarily at the intended mounting point.
- Check live view and notifications from that position before drilling.
- Test the connection at night as well as during the day.
- Keep the camera close enough to a router or mesh node for stable uploads.
- Do not assume a strong phone signal means the camera has a strong signal.
- Avoid metal enclosures, sealed boxes and views directly into sunrise or sunset glare.
- For wired cameras, route the cable with a drip loop and protect the connection and wall entry.
- Format and test the storage card, then confirm that recordings can be played back and downloaded.
- Set a focus zone and tune sensitivity after observing normal traffic for several days.
The AW300 advertises an external antenna and 2.4GHz-class long-range connectivity, but that should not be generalized to every Xiaomi outdoor camera. Confirm the exact Wi-Fi requirement for the regional model.
Common installation problems
Busy driveway
A battery camera can trigger far more often than Xiaomi’s battery test scenario. Choose wired power or expect frequent charging and reduced runtime.

Outdoor placement is not enough. Heavy shade, poor orientation and short winter daylight can leave the battery losing charge.
Long driveway or licence plates
A 7-to-10-metre detection or night-vision claim does not mean faces or plates will be readable at that distance. Wide-angle views, glare and motion make dedicated identification difficult.
Bright porch light
Direct backlighting can turn faces into silhouettes. Reposition the camera so the main light source is not directly behind the subject.
Cold weather
Battery capacity and runtime can fall in low temperatures. Check the exact operating-temperature range for the selected model.

Live view may stutter, notifications may arrive late and event clips may fail to upload. Improve the network before blaming detection settings.
Privacy and account dependence
Xiaomi advertises encrypted video transmission and a Mi Home Security Chip on models including the AW300 and BW500. That is a manufacturer security claim, not a guarantee of absolute privacy.
Cloud recording and remote access involve a Xiaomi account, app infrastructure, regional servers and service policies. Review the local privacy policy, retention terms and cloud region. Local microSD or eMMC storage reduces dependence on cloud history but does not necessarily remove app or account dependence.
Do not assume RTSP, ONVIF, NAS recording or third-party NVR compatibility. Those capabilities must be confirmed for the exact model and firmware. Xiaomi’s privacy policy explains the broader data-handling framework.

Before purchasing, check all of the following in your country:
- Whether the exact model is officially sold, rather than merely listed globally.
- Mi Home app-region compatibility and firmware support.
- Warranty coverage and replacement options.
- Plug, adapter and cable requirements.
- Cloud-service cluster, subscription terms and AI-feature availability.
- Whether a solar panel, receiver or base station is included.
- Whether local recording requires a particular card capacity or format.
For the United States, the available evidence does not establish broad retail availability for every camera in this list. European Xiaomi store listings, including France and Germany, should not be treated as US prices or proof of US warranty support.
