For wood joints exposed to rain, start with a wood glue the manufacturer identifies as ANSI/HPVA Type I waterproof, such as Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue or Gorilla Wood Glue Ultimate. For a project that stays under cover and sees only limited direct wetting, Gorilla Wood Glue is a Type II option. These are manufacturer-supported choices, not proven head-to-head winners; the right fit depends on the joint and its exposure.

Choose glue by the kind of outdoor exposure

“Outdoor” can mean a sheltered porch joint, a garden project repeatedly wetted by rain, or a joint that remains submerged. Those conditions are not interchangeable. Match the glue to the expected exposure, then follow the product’s current label and directions.

  • Covered and mostly dry: Gorilla Wood Glue is a Type II product whose manufacturer says it is suitable for outdoor use under a covered area, but not for continual water exposure.
  • Rain-exposed wood-to-wood joints: Consider a Type I waterproof wood glue, including Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue or Gorilla Wood Glue Ultimate.
  • Continuous submersion or below-waterline use: Do not assume a waterproof rating makes a product suitable. Gorilla specifically excludes continuous submersion and below-waterline use for Wood Glue Ultimate.

Type I and Type II are useful manufacturer-stated resistance distinctions, but they do not by themselves predict the service life of every joint in every outdoor setting.

How the candidates compare

Product Manufacturer-stated resistance and directions Best-supported fit Limits
Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue Franklin International says it passed ANSI/HPVA Type I and describes the formula as waterproof. The company dates development of the one-part Type I wood glue from which Titebond III was born to 2004. Franklin International Candidate for exterior wood-to-wood bonding where stronger water resistance is sought. The cited official source does not provide full directions, application temperature, or cure time. No comparative performance ranking is established.
Gorilla Wood Glue Ultimate Passes ANSI/HPVA Type I; the manufacturer states 20–30 minutes of clamp time, 24 hours to cure, and application at or above 50°F. The Gorilla Glue Company Type I option when its listed materials and directions suit the project. Manufacturer says it is not recommended for structural or load-bearing applications, or continuous submersion or below-waterline use.
Gorilla Wood Glue Passes ANSI/HPVA Type II; the manufacturer describes outdoor use under a covered area and says it is not recommended for continual water exposure. The Gorilla Glue Company Covered outdoor projects with limited direct wetting. Not the Type I choice for exposed weather.
Original Gorilla Glue Water-activated polyurethane glue that bonds wood and other listed materials, expands as it cures, and is described as waterproof. The Gorilla Glue Company Alternative when bonding compatible mixed materials or when a polyurethane glue is preferred. The source does not establish that it is superior for ordinary tight wood-to-wood joints. Account for expansion and follow current directions.

These pages report manufacturer claims and product instructions, not independent comparative testing. They do not establish a measured bond-strength ranking among the candidates.

What to check before gluing

Confirm the exposure and intended use

Decide whether the joint will be sheltered, regularly rained on, or continuously wet. Check the exact product’s stated resistance and exclusions rather than relying on “waterproof” alone. Water resistance does not establish that glue alone makes a joint structurally adequate.

Make sure the joint and materials suit the adhesive

Prepare sound wood and a close-fitting joint, and confirm that the adhesive is intended for the materials being bonded. For mixed-material work, Original Gorilla Glue is a possible candidate, but its expansion during cure is an important handling consideration.

Follow product-specific application directions

Clamp and cure times and application temperature are formula-specific. For Gorilla Wood Glue Ultimate, the manufacturer lists 20–30 minutes of clamp time, 24 hours to cure, and application at or above 50°F. Do not transfer those values to other products; use the selected glue’s current label and technical information.
