Best Wi-Fi Thermostats for Garage Heaters: Choose by Voltage and Wiring

Choose a Wi-Fi thermostat for a garage heater by matching its control voltage, wiring, load, and installation environment—not by features alone.

The best Wi-Fi thermostat for a garage heater is the one that matches the heater’s control circuit—not simply the one with the most features. A low-voltage thermostat and a 120/240 V line-voltage thermostat are different products and cannot be swapped based on appearance or wire count. Identify the heater and existing thermostat wiring first, then consider a compatible Wi-Fi model.

Start with the heater’s control circuit

Check the heater’s nameplate and installation manual, along with the instructions for its existing thermostat. The circuit may be 24 VAC, millivolt, or 120/240 V line voltage. Wi-Fi capability does not indicate which circuit a thermostat supports.

Honeywell’s thermostat voltage guidance distinguishes 24 V control systems from 120/240 V line-voltage systems and warns that a low-voltage thermostat will not work on line-voltage wiring. If you cannot confidently identify the circuit, stop and consult a qualified HVAC or electrical professional rather than guessing.

Wi-Fi thermostat options documented for these circuit types

These are conditional candidates, not universal garage-heater recommendations. Verify the exact heater, wiring, electrical load, thermostat rating, and planned installation location before buying.

Resideo / Honeywell Home FocusPRO S200 Wi-Fi, including TH2320WF4010 The FocusPRO P200 & S200 installation manual lists 24 VAC applications and 750 mV support for specified models. Smart models TH2110WF4008, TH2320WF4010, and TH2320WF4011 support 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. For an S200 using a 750 mV application, the manual requires 24 VAC at RC and C as well as the millivolt circuit connected to R and W. The manual specifies indoor use only; confirm environmental suitability before installing in a garage.
Mysa Wi-Fi line-voltage thermostat for electric baseboard heaters Mysa describes its baseboard products as switching 120/240 V for specified electric baseboards, convectors, and fan-forced wall heaters. Its low- versus high-voltage guide distinguishes these products from its 24 V central-HVAC thermostat. Its compatibility quick check says the product replaces a separate wall thermostat on an eligible 120/240 V system. A built-in heater control or 24 V wiring is incompatible with this product. Confirm the exact model’s heater and load ratings.

Check compatibility before you buy

  1. Find the heater’s identity. Record its make and model from the nameplate, then read the heater’s installation manual.
  2. Identify the control circuit. Determine whether the existing control is 24 VAC, millivolt, or 120/240 V line voltage. Do not infer voltage from the thermostat’s location, Wi-Fi features, or number of wires.
  3. Match the thermostat to the heater and wiring. Check supported heater types, terminals, required power or common wire, and rated load in both manufacturers’ documentation. For example, the FocusPRO S200 750 mV configuration also requires 24 VAC at RC and C.
  4. Check the installation location. Compare the thermostat’s environmental and installation ratings with the garage conditions. Do not assume an indoor-only thermostat is suitable for an exposed or harsh location.
  5. Follow the exact instructions. Turn off power before working and comply with applicable local electrical requirements. Honeywell’s thermostat replacement safety guidance advises consulting the model instructions and using qualified help when needed.

When a Wi-Fi thermostat may not be a direct replacement

The documented options do not establish that a Wi-Fi thermostat can directly replace every millivolt control, factory-integrated control, high-current 240 V thermostat, or proprietary garage-heater control. Do not add a relay or adapter unless the heater and thermostat manufacturers explicitly support the exact arrangement and its electrical ratings. If the heater has a built-in control, or the wiring and load are unclear, get qualified advice before proceeding.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best smart thermostat for a garage heater?

There is no universal best choice: first match the thermostat to the heater’s control voltage, wiring, load, and installation location. The Resideo / Honeywell Home FocusPRO S200 and Mysa line-voltage products serve different circuit types.

Can I use a Wi-Fi thermostat with a millivolt garage heater?

Possibly, but only if the exact thermostat model and heater wiring meet the manufacturer’s requirements. For the FocusPRO S200 750 mV configuration, Resideo specifies an additional 24 VAC supply at RC and C, with the millivolt circuit connected to R and W.

Will a smart thermostat work with a 240 V garage heater?

Only a thermostat specifically rated for the heater’s line-voltage circuit and load may be suitable. A 24 V central-HVAC thermostat is not a substitute for a line-voltage thermostat.
