For practice welding clean, relatively thin mild steel, E6013 is a sensible rod to consider: manufacturers describe it as having a softer arc and moderate-to-lower penetration suited to thinner material. It is not the best choice for every beginner or every job. Match the electrode to your welder, base metal, thickness, joint, welding position and service requirements before striking an arc.
Start with the job, not the rod label
“Welding rod” can mean different consumables. This guide is about shielded metal arc welding (stick welding) electrodes, commonly identified by classifications such as E6013 and E7018. AWS maintains classifications for many different welding consumables, so electrodes are not interchangeable just because they fit the same holder. AWS’s A5 Committee on Filler Metals and Allied Materials oversees standards in this area.
Before choosing an electrode, identify the workpiece material and thickness, joint fit-up, welding position, required weld properties and service conditions. Then confirm that the electrode is compatible with the machine’s AC or DC output and follow the rod manufacturer’s data sheet for current and use. Miller’s stick-electrode selection guide covers these factors, including base-metal condition and electrode diameter.
Which stick electrode should a beginner consider?
E6013: a candidate for clean, thin mild steel
E6013 is a reasonable starting point when practicing on clean, relatively thin mild steel with a compatible welder. Miller describes its arc as softer, with medium penetration, and recommends it for clean, new sheet metal. Hobart likewise describes E6013 as having less penetration than E6010 or E6011 and lists thinner materials and light fabrication among its uses. Those are use-case descriptions, not a guarantee that every E6013 product suits every machine or job. Check the specific electrode’s data sheet and your welder’s output.

- PERFORMANCE: Excellent arc stability, increased ductility, and low spatter. Requiring minimal surface preparation.
- APPLICATION: It can be used in a wide range of applications, such as ordinary or galvanized storage tanks, maintenance of steel castings, machine element, construction, pressure pipes, etc.
- SPECIFICATION: Diameter: 3/32''; Length: 14''; Weight: 5LB. Recommended Amperages: 110A-170A.
E6010: a deep, tight DCEP arc
E6010 is designed for direct-current electrode-positive (DCEP) welding and produces a tight, deeply penetrating arc. Miller notes that it can dig through surface contamination. That does not make dirty or coated metal safe to weld, nor does it remove the benefit of preparing the workpiece. Verify that your power source and application support E6010 before selecting it.
E7018: low-hydrogen electrode for demanding work
E7018 is a low-hydrogen electrode used for higher-strength and more critical applications. Hobart describes it as suitable for AC or DCEP and as having medium penetration. Its performance depends on proper storage and, where specified, reconditioning. Follow the particular manufacturer’s instructions; for code-governed or critical work, use the applicable specification and welding procedure rather than choosing by beginner-friendliness.

E7014 and E7024: useful in narrower situations
Hobart describes E7014 as having a smooth, stable arc and higher deposition from iron powder, with applications including frames, heavy sheet and machine bases. E7024 also offers higher deposition, but is intended for flat and horizontal positions. That position restriction makes it a poor fit when the work requires all-position welding. Neither classification replaces an electrode specified for a critical job.
How to read the classification and choose electrode size
Use the full electrode classification and the manufacturer’s literature, rather than relying on a partial label or a general rule of thumb. In common stick-electrode classifications, the third digit indicates position: a 1 denotes flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead positions, while a 2 denotes flat and horizontal. The fourth digit indicates coating and current compatibility. Miller explains these conventions in its stick-welding rod Q&A.

Diameter affects penetration and must suit both the workpiece and the welder. Miller notes that smaller-diameter electrodes provide shallower penetration, which can help on thinner material. There is no sound universal beginner amperage or diameter: select both from the electrode maker’s recommendations for the actual material, joint and machine.
Prepare the metal and handle electrodes correctly
- Remove excessive rust, scale, moisture, paint and grease where possible. Miller links clean base metal with reduced porosity and improved travel speed.
- Do not treat an electrode’s ability to dig through contamination as permission to weld over paint or unknown coatings. Their hazards depend on what is present; identify and address coatings safely before welding.
- For low-hydrogen electrodes such as E7018, follow the manufacturer’s stated storage and reconditioning requirements. Handling instructions are part of using the electrode, not an optional detail.
When a beginner guide is not enough
For structural work, pressure vessels, boilers or other critical service, electrode selection is controlled by the governing specification, service conditions and an applicable welding procedure. Do not choose a rod solely because it seems easy to use or because a strength number appears suitable. If the project’s requirements are unclear, consult the responsible welding professional or engineer before welding.
