Those are that review’s editorial picks—not a verified current ranking or the result of a documented comparative test. For choosing a spreader, start with the surface and how precisely you need to place material: broadcast models cover wider areas, while drop models keep material in a narrower path.
What did the 2021 review recommend?
Ezvid’s July 9, 2021 review named the Chapin International 8400C as its preferred walk-behind model for medium-to-large applications. Its editor’s notes said the Earthway 2150 might perform better on uneven ground. Ezvid also said it added the Chapin largely to replace a similarly sized Earthway model, citing gearbox lifespan concerns when used with salt. The page does not provide a formal comparative test protocol, so treat these as dated editorial judgments rather than established reliability findings or a comprehensive ranking. Ezvid’s 2021 review

Broadcast or drop: which spread pattern fits?
Broadcast for wider areas
A broadcast spreader throws material across a broader swath, which can suit driveways, courtyards, and wide walkways. FISHER describes its WB-100B as a broadcast walk-behind model for wider pathways and similar surfaces. A broader pattern can mean fewer passes, but it also calls for care around beds, lawns, and other areas where salt is unwanted. FISHER’s current walk-behind product page

Drop spreading for narrow walks and edges
A drop spreader releases material beneath the hopper in a more confined path. FISHER describes its WB-160D as a more precise choice for narrow sidewalks and for keeping material away from adjoining landscaping. That control can help when a path runs close to sensitive planting, though a narrower pattern may require more passes on broad surfaces. The capacity figures below are tied to FISHER’s 2021 brochure, not presented as verified current specifications. Capacity alone does not establish which model is best: pattern and the surface you need to treat matter too.

| Model | Pattern and intended use | Capacity listed in FISHER’s 2021 brochure | Other brochure details |
|---|---|---|---|
| FISHER WB-100B | Broadcast; wider pathways and areas | 100 lb | 13-inch pneumatic tires, top screen, powder-coated steel frame; poly deflector kit listed |
| FISHER WB-160D | Drop; narrow walks and more controlled placement near landscaping | 160 lb | 13-inch pneumatic tires, top screen, powder-coated steel frame |
FISHER’s current product page lists both models at 1.5 cubic feet capacity. That is a current-page volume specification, distinct from the model-specific pound capacities in the dated brochure. What to check before choosing a walk-behind salt spreader
- Surface and pattern: Match a wider broadcast swath to open drives or paths; consider drop spreading where you need a narrower line beside landscaping.
- Terrain: If the route is uneven, note that Ezvid’s 2021 review singled out the Earthway 2150 as a possible better fit there. This is an attributed editorial opinion, not a documented terrain test.
- Capacity: Use capacity to estimate how often you may need to refill, but compare figures only when the units and model specifications are clear.
- Material compatibility: Confirm that the exact model supports the salt or ice-melt product you intend to use. A spreader’s general category does not prove compatibility with every material or blend. Buyers Products’ catalog illustrates model-specific paths for winter materials such as bulk salt, ice melt, and bagged rock salt. Buyers Products catalog
- Control and construction: Look for a way to limit material near sensitive areas, and check construction and care instructions relevant to corrosion. FISHER’s 2021 brochure lists a powder-coated steel frame among shared features; that listing by itself does not establish a particular service life.
- Accessories: A deflector or cover may be useful only if it is compatible with the specific model. Verify fit and current availability with the manufacturer or dealer.
How to interpret other salt-spreader reviews
A newer review can offer useful model-specific information without changing what a 2021 ranking said. Bob Vila’s review reports its own testing of several salt spreaders; its Scotts Elite discussion lists an 80-pound capacity and a six-foot spread width, and notes that its edge guard is on one side only. Those details belong to that model and that review, not to the 2021 Ezvid picks or to walk-behind spreaders as a category. Bob Vila’s salt spreader review
Rank #3
- LARGE HOPPER CAPACITY: 130 lb hopper covers up to 1/2 acre or 25,000 sq ft with fewer refills, making this pull-behind spreader ideal for larger lawn projects
- UNIVERSAL TRACTOR COMPATIBILITY: Universal hitch design connects easily to most riding lawn mowers and lawn tractors, including Craftsman, Husqvarna, Cub Cadet, and more
- CONSISTENT WIDE SPREADING: Wide 10 ft to 12 ft spread width helps provide more even fertilizer and seed distribution with fewer passes across the lawn
- VERSATILE ALL-SEASON PERFORMANCE: Ideal for spreading grass seed, fertilizer, lawn treatments, salt, and ice melt to help maintain healthy lawns throughout the year
- DURABLE LONG-LASTING CONSTRUCTION: Built with 1 in steel tubing, enclosed gear house, poly hopper, spreader plate, and 13 in x 4 in pneumatic tires for reliable use
For context, a 2020 arXiv paper states that more than 30 million tons of deicing salt are applied annually on U.S. roads, at an estimated cost of roughly $1.2 billion. That figure concerns road deicing, not residential walk-behind spreaders, and does not measure household salt use. “Sensor-Based Spreader Automation for Reducing Salt Use and Improving Safety”
