Best Vapor Barrier for Shower Walls: How to Choose the Right System

The best shower-wall vapor control depends on the assembly and whether the room is an ordinary shower or a steam shower. Compare the two approaches and their key details.

There is no single best vapor barrier for every shower wall. For an ordinary tiled shower, choose a complete waterproofing assembly—either a traditional behind-the-substrate water-in/water-out system or a bonded membrane on the tile-side surface—and follow its instructions from wall to drain. For a steam shower, vapor permeance and the room’s use matter as well as liquid-water waterproofing.

Do shower walls need a vapor barrier?

A tiled shower needs a designed moisture-management system, but “vapor barrier” can mean different things depending on the assembly. Tile and grout are not the waterproofing layer: water can pass through them into the materials beneath. The assembly must manage that moisture using a compatible set of backing, waterproofing, seams, transitions, and drain components.

In an ordinary shower, the key decision is not simply whether to add a sheet of plastic. It is which complete system is being built and where its water-control layer belongs. A layer behind the substrate and a membrane bonded to its surface are distinct approaches, not layers to combine by default.

Compare the two common shower-wall approaches

Approach Where the water-control layer goes How it connects Key consideration
Traditional water-in/water-out assembly Polyethylene sheeting or roofing felt is placed behind the wall substrate, as described in Schluter’s technical guidance. The wall layer laps over a pan liner; the floor assembly uses a sloped mortar bed and liner connected to the drain. Details such as the pre-slope and protected pan liner matter. Confirm the full assembly and local requirements rather than treating this description as universal code advice.
Bonded surface-applied membrane A sheet-applied or trowel-applied membrane is installed on the tile-side surface of solid backing. The membrane is integrated with a compatible drain connection at the membrane surface, along with treated seams, corners, and penetrations. Use the membrane, backing, floor or tray, and drain as a designed system; do not add a behind-board layer without assembly-specific guidance.

Schluter describes both methods in its guidance on shower-system waterproofing. In its explanation of traditional construction, it notes that omitting the pan’s pre-slope can leave the mortar bed saturated, and that penetrations in a pan liner can cause leaks. These are assembly details, not a substitute for current installation instructions or locally applicable code and inspection requirements.

How to choose for your shower

For an ordinary tiled shower

Choose one complete approach and verify that its products and details are compatible. A surface membrane must connect correctly to its drain; a traditional assembly must handle the pan liner, wall layer, and transitions as specified. Check whether the wall already contains another vapor-control layer before adding anything. Multiple low-permeance layers can create an assembly problem, so do not add one by assumption.

For a residential intermittent-use steam shower

Steam adds a vapor-control question that ordinary liquid-water waterproofing does not answer. Schluter says ANSI A118.10 addresses bonded membranes as barriers to positive liquid-water migration but sets no minimum vapor-transmission criterion. A product’s compliance with that standard therefore does not, by itself, establish its suitability for steam exposure.

Ardex VB 100 Ready-to-Use Fast Drying Vapor Barrier 5 Gal (19 L) Pail
  • Advanced water control: Reduces water vapor emissions in concrete to acceptable levels for floor coverings, performing reliably even in conditions up to 100% RH.
  • Fast drying performance: Quick-drying two-coat system enables installation of underlayments in as little as 60 minutes after second coat application, accelerating project timelines.
  • Ready-to-use formula: One-component, pre-mixed system requires no additives or dilution, ensuring consistent results while saving time during preparation and application.
  • No priming required: Eliminates the need for priming or minimum surface profiling before applying underlayments, simplifying installation and reducing labor requirements.
  • Versatile application areas: Suitable for interior floors and walls in showers, kitchens, bathrooms, steam rooms and other wet or high-wet conditions environments.

Schluter describes water-vapor permeance as the rate at which vapor passes through a material, measured under ASTM E96. Its general guidance says materials at or below 1.0 perm are generally considered vapor retarders; treat that as the manufacturer’s guidance, not a universal code requirement. Lower permeance indicates more resistance to vapor transmission. Confirm the intended use and test conditions with the product manufacturer.

For a continuous-use commercial steam room

Do not extend a residential intermittent-use product statement to continuous-use rooms. Schluter says continuous-use commercial steam showers require more strenuous moisture-management measures. Obtain product-specific design guidance for the actual use, wall and ceiling assembly, transitions, and penetrations.

What the KERDI specification does—and does not—tell you

Schluter describes KERDI as a sheet-applied waterproofing membrane and vapor retarder for tiled showers. Its product documentation lists an 8-mil membrane thickness and a 2-meter (6 ft 7 in) width for one roll option. The product page is Schluter’s KERDI listing.

For residential or intermittent-use steam showers, Schluter reports a KERDI water-vapor permeance of 0.90 perms under ASTM E96 Procedure E at 90% relative humidity. This is the manufacturer’s stated result for that product and test condition, not an independent comparison or proof that KERDI is best for every shower. The manufacturer’s steam-shower guidance says the membrane should cover wall, ceiling, and floor surfaces for the described application. It also calls for waterproofing the ceiling and sloping it to reduce condensation dripping on occupants.

Installation details that protect the assembly

Regardless of approach, the system’s transitions and connections are as important as the membrane field. Follow the selected manufacturer’s current instructions for:

  • Seams, corners, and changes of plane
  • Wall-to-floor transitions and the shower pan or tray
  • The membrane-to-drain connection
  • Pipe, valve, and other penetrations
  • Steam-shower ceilings, where applicable

Do not assume a membrane works with an unreviewed substrate or drain, or that a detail from one method can be borrowed for another. When planning the work, verify local requirements and inspection expectations, and resolve any existing wall vapor-control layers before installation.

What to ask before buying or building

  • Is this an ordinary shower, an intermittent-use residential steam shower, or a continuous-use steam room?
  • Is the chosen water-control layer behind the substrate or bonded to its tile-side surface?
  • Do the backing, membrane, seams, pan or tray, and drain form a compatible assembly?
  • For steam exposure, what vapor-permeance figure applies, and under which test method and conditions?
  • Are the ceiling, corners, penetrations, and transitions addressed in the manufacturer’s instructions?
  • Does the assembly meet locally applicable requirements, and are other vapor-control layers already present?

The cited product and technical information here comes from Schluter Systems, a manufacturer; it does not establish an independent cross-brand ranking. The right choice is the complete assembly suited to the shower’s use and installed according to its instructions.
