These compact point-of-use mini-tanks provide hot water close to a faucet, either from a cold-water feed as a standalone heater or from a remote heater’s hot-water line as a booster. Compare capacity, recovery, fit, connections, and safety requirements before choosing a model.
What an under-sink electric water heater does
An under-sink mini-tank stores and heats a small amount of water near the point of use. Because the water is already close to the faucet, it can reduce the wait associated with hot water traveling through a long pipe run. Manufacturer examples span roughly 1.5 to 6 gallons, but the right capacity depends on how the sink is used and how quickly the tank recovers.
Standalone supply
In a standalone arrangement, the mini-tank is fed with cold water and supplies hot water to the nearby sink. Confirm that the exact model’s instructions permit this configuration and specify the correct plumbing connections.
Booster supply
A booster arrangement connects the mini-tank to the hot-water line from a remote main heater. A nearby stored supply can serve the sink first and be replenished from the main heater. Bosch describes this arrangement for long runs; the selected mini-tank must support the intended feed configuration. See Bosch’s electric water heater FAQ and the Stiebel Eltron SHC product page.

- Get the performance you expect. Choose the right size water heater for your home and verify electrical requirements before installation. When properly sized and professionally installed, Rheem Tankless Electric Water Heaters deliver reliable, on-demand hot water while saving valuable space.
- 3.5 kW model provides up to 0.5 GPM
- Point-of-Use Water Heaters are ideal for small spaces and one fixture applications - Basement sink, garage workshop, outdoor kitchen.
- Wiring Requirements (RTEX‑04T): Requires 120V single‑phase power, one- 30‑amp single‑pole breaker, one set of #10 AWG copper conductors with ground, and a recommended minimum 100 ‑amp household electrical service panel for proper operation.
- Digital thermostatic temperature controls in 1-degree increments ranging from 80°F - 140°F (26°C - 60°C).
How to choose capacity and recovery
Tank capacity is only one part of sizing. Consider how long the faucet typically runs, how often hot water is drawn, how many people may use the sink in succession, and how long the household can wait for the tank to recover. A brief, occasional draw may suit a smaller tank; frequent or longer draws may call for more stored capacity or a model with faster recovery. These are decision factors, not a universal gallon-per-sink rule.
Use recovery time to compare replenishment
Recovery time indicates how long a model takes to reheat its stored water under the manufacturer’s stated specifications. For example, the SHC manual lists 18 minutes for the SHC 2.5 and 27 minutes for the SHC 4. Those values apply to those models; they do not establish how quickly every mini-tank recovers.

- COMPACT DESIGN - Ideal in limited spaces like kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, barns, cabins, RVs, garages, sheds, pet washing station, etc
- EASY INSTALLATION - Installs in minutes with existing plumbing. Uses standard 1/2-in NPT water connections for simple wall or floor mounted installation
- HOT WATER BOOSTER - Works as a standalone unit, or inline with another water heater to boost long pipe runs or washing machines
- INTUITIVE CONTROLS - Easily adjust water temperature and power at the turn of a knob to your desired settings
- STAINLESS STEEL HEATING ELEMENT - Provides reliable heat with ultra-durable design that resists rust and corrosion
Separate a long pipe wait from a small-tank problem
If the main issue is waiting for hot water to travel from a distant heater, assess whether a compatible booster arrangement is appropriate. If hot water arrives promptly but runs out during the task, capacity and recovery are more relevant. Plumbing layout and actual use determine which problem the mini-tank should solve.
Check cabinet fit, power, and plumbing before buying
- Measure the installation space. Compare the exact unit’s width, height, depth, mounting position, and service clearances with the cabinet or wall. Allow access to connections and components that may need inspection or service; do not assume a capacity label tells you the physical size.
- Verify the electrical supply. Check the model label and current manual for voltage, current, wattage, plug, grounding, and circuit requirements. Rheem describes the cited mini-tanks as using a grounded 120 V plug; the SHC manual lists 110–120 V, 1300 W, and 11.3 A. Do not infer that another model will work with the same outlet or circuit.
- Confirm the plumbing arrangement. Identify whether the unit will be fed by cold water as a standalone supply or connected to a remote heater’s hot-water line as a booster. Check the exact manual for permitted feed arrangements and connection requirements.
- Account for filled weight and support. Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the unit’s dimensions and weight, including when filled, and confirm the wall, shelf, or cabinet can safely support it in the intended position.
- Review the warranty for the exact model. Compare the written warranty supplied for the specific unit and seller, including coverage limits and exclusions. Product-line pages can describe related models with different terms.
Installation and safety requirements
Mini-tank placement is a plumbing and electrical decision, not just a matter of finding an empty cabinet. Requirements vary by model and local jurisdiction. The Stiebel Eltron SHC manual says installation must be performed by licensed professionals and comply with state and local codes. It calls for vertical mounting with water fittings upward, service access and required clearance, and protection from routine splashing and freezing. It recommends a drain pan where leakage could damage the surrounding area.

Pay particular attention to the temperature-and-pressure (T&P) relief valve and its discharge route. Follow the exact model manual’s requirements; never block or cap the outlet. Before work begins, have the installer confirm mounting, plumbing connections, electrical compatibility, clearances, drainage, and access for future service. The Stiebel Eltron SHC installation manual provides the cited model-specific requirements; do not apply its directions automatically to a different heater.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not assume a mini-tank will save energy or money
A nearby heater can reduce the wait for hot water at the sink, but energy or cost savings are not guaranteed for every installation. Results depend on the existing pipe run, heater arrangement, usage, temperature settings, and the mini-tank’s standby losses. Stiebel Eltron’s manual, for example, lists SHC standby-loss figures measured under a stated 131°F set point and 68°F ambient-air condition; those are specifications for the two listed models, not a general comparison with other systems. Evaluate the actual layout and product data rather than treating point-of-use placement as a universal savings claim.
