For a freestanding, height-adjustable work light, the DEWALT DCL079 is the closest match: it has a telescoping tripod pole that extends to 7 feet, three brightness settings, and manufacturer-listed output of up to 4,000 lumens on the DCL079B. If you already own a compatible stand or want broader coverage, consider a tripod-mountable area light instead. The right choice depends on coverage, battery platform, kit contents, and the exact runtime specification—not peak lumens alone.

Tripod work lights to consider

These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent brightness, runtime, or durability test results. Compare them by setup and intended coverage as well as by lumen rating.

Model Setup and coverage Manufacturer-listed output and runtime Power and package Key consideration
DEWALT DCL079B Dedicated cordless telescoping tripod light; extends to 7 feet; three settings Up to 4,000 lumens. DEWALT lists more than 11 hours on low with a DCB206 battery; this is not an all-mode runtime. 20V MAX; tool only, with battery and charger sold separately DEWALT lists IP55. Check the manual’s use and weather cautions.
DEWALT DCL079R1 Dedicated cordless telescoping tripod light; extends to 7 feet; three settings 3,000 lumens on high. DEWALT lists more than 11 hours on the specified battery and low setting. Kit includes a 6.0 Ah battery and charger This is a different SKU and configuration from the DCL079B; DEWALT lists IP54.
RIDGID R86903 Area light with 360-degree, front-only, and rear-only modes; 1/4-in.-20 tripod mount 500, 1,000, or 2,000 lumens. RIDGID specifies up to 18 hours on low with an AC840060 6.0 Ah battery. 18V; battery and charger sold separately Confirm whether the stand you plan to use is included; the product specifies a tripod mount.
DEWALT DCL077B Compact task light; 1/4-in.-20 and 5/8-in.-11 tripod mounts Up to 2,000 lumens Works with DEWALT 12V MAX, 20V MAX, and FLEXVOLT batteries; battery and charger sold separately It mounts to a tripod but is not a full telescoping tripod light.
DEWALT DCL073 All-purpose light that can stand, hang, or mount to a tripod Over 5,000 lumens DEWALT 20V MAX or FLEXVOLT batteries; AC pass-through Check tripod compatibility and the package details for the setup you want.

Specifications: DEWALT DCL079B, DEWALT DCL079R1, RIDGID R86903, DEWALT DCL077B, and DEWALT DCL073. Product pages do not establish an independently tested overall winner.

Choose a dedicated stand or a tripod-mounted light

Dedicated telescoping tripod lights

A dedicated unit such as the DCL079 combines its light and stand in one product and raises the head to illuminate a work area from above. It is a straightforward option if you need a freestanding setup and do not already have a suitable tripod. The DCL079B and DCL079R1 are separate packages, so compare the included battery and charger—not just the model family name.

Lights that mount to a separate tripod

A tripod-mountable light can be a more compact choice or give you coverage a directional work light does not. The RIDGID R86903 offers 360-degree, front-only, and rear-only modes; DEWALT’s DCL077B has two specified tripod-thread sizes. Confirm that the light’s mount matches your stand and that the stand is included if you need one.

Match brightness and runtime to the job

Lumens describe light output, but a maximum figure alone does not tell you how long the light will run or how well its beam suits your work. The DCL079B’s “up to 4,000 lumens” and the DCL079R1’s “3,000 lumens on high” are different manufacturer specifications for different SKUs. RIDGID lists three output levels, which lets you choose among its stated modes. Check the product page for the precise mode and battery condition attached to any runtime claim.

For localized work, a directional light may be easier to aim. For a crew working around a central area, the RIDGID’s selectable 360-degree coverage may be more useful than a single forward beam. These are differences in configuration, not proof that one light performs better in a real jobsite comparison.

Check battery platform and kit contents

If you already own compatible batteries, platform compatibility may matter more than a higher maximum lumen figure. The DCL079B is a 20V MAX tool-only listing; the DCL079R1 kit includes a 6.0 Ah battery and charger. RIDGID lists the R86903 as an 18V product with its battery and charger sold separately. The DCL077B supports DEWALT 12V MAX, 20V MAX, and FLEXVOLT batteries, while the DCL073 supports 20V MAX or FLEXVOLT and has AC pass-through.

  • Check the exact SKU and whether it includes a battery and charger.
  • Confirm compatibility with the battery system you own; a brand match alone does not establish compatibility.
  • If buying into a platform, account for the battery and charger needed to use the light.
  • For corded use, verify the intended model’s AC capability rather than assuming a cordless light has it.

Verify the mount, height, and placement

Tripod threads are not interchangeable by assumption. DEWALT lists both 1/4-in.-20 and 5/8-in.-11 mounts for the DCL077B; RIDGID specifies a 1/4-in.-20 mount for the R86903. Match those specifications to the stand before buying. For a dedicated light, consider whether its stated height and the space needed to deploy its legs fit the work area.

Place the stand on a stable surface, aim the head to limit glare, and keep legs and cords out of walkways. For model-specific setup and safety details, use the manual for the exact SKU.

Follow the model’s safety instructions

For the DCL079 family, DEWALT’s manual says, “The tripod light is intended for workspace lighting only. Use as directed,” and “Only use tripod light on stable surface.” It also says not to expose that light to rain or snow and advises providing a dry location for outdoor use. The manual warns against use around flammable liquids or gaseous or explosive atmospheres, submersion, unstable placement, and positioning that could cause people to stare into the light head. Read the instructions for your exact model; DCL079 directions are not a substitute for another manufacturer’s manual.

An ingress-protection rating is a model-specific specification, not a reason to ignore the operating instructions or assume the light is suitable for every outdoor condition. See the DEWALT DCL079 instruction manual for its guidance.
