The best storm door depends on your entryway, sun exposure, and whether you value an uninterrupted view, maximum screen airflow, or a more protected lower panel. Consumer Reports describes tests of several storm doors, but the detailed individual scores are not available in its public listing, so the evidence does not support naming a verified overall winner. Use the guide below to narrow the right configuration and check fit before you buy.
What a storm door is—and is not—for
A typical hinged storm door adds a buffer against everyday drafts and moderate rain. It is not designed to withstand severe storms. Consumer Reports quotes Larry Ciufo, who oversees its door tests, describing the doors as intended for everyday conditions: helping block drafts and keep out the elements.
A storm door can also provide a screened opening for ventilation and a glass panel for visibility and weather buffering. Those benefits depend on the door’s configuration and how it is used; the sources cited here do not establish a specific energy-savings figure.
Choose a configuration based on how you use the entry
| Configuration | What it offers | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Full-view interchangeable glass and screen | Full-height glass can provide a clear view; swapping in a full-height screen can provide top-to-bottom airflow. | You must change panels when you want to switch between glass and screen. Andersen says its 10 Series Quick Change option can be swapped in under a minute; this is a manufacturer claim, not an independent timing result. |
| Full-view retractable screen | Full-view glass with a screen built into the door, so there is no separate screen panel to swap. | Andersen says this offers less top-to-bottom airflow than an interchangeable full screen. |
| Three-quarter- or half-light retractable screen | Retractable screening with a larger solid lower panel than a full-view design. Andersen says a half-light version can be configured with a pet door. | Less glass area means a less uninterrupted view than full-view glass. |
| Fully retractable insect-screen door | An all-screen option for an entry where the priority is insect screening and ventilation. | It has no glass panel to provide the glass-and-screen weather buffer of a conventional storm door. |
These configuration descriptions reflect Andersen’s product guidance. For a clear view and the convenience of a built-in screen, a full-view retractable style is one option to compare; for the greatest screen opening, compare it with an interchangeable full-screen model.

Compare real models without mistaking a listing for a ranking
Consumer Reports’ 2026 storm-door ratings listing showed six models and displayed prices from $219 to $445 when accessed through the search result. That span is a volatile listing snapshot, not a guaranteed current price or a comparable installed cost. The detailed ratings require membership, and the accessible information does not establish individual overall scores or a top model.
The listing names these models, without establishing a ranking order:

Check current product pricing and treat delivery and professional installation as separate costs; the sources here do not provide comparable installed totals.
What Consumer Reports tested
Consumer Reports says it assesses wind resistance, ease of use, installation time, and ease of installation. Its 2026 article describes mounting a door on a prebuilt frame, exposing it to a steady 25 mph wind, and measuring how much air passes through. In its reported test observations, installation ranged from 45 minutes to two hours or more. These are the publication’s conditions and observations, not a promise about how long installation will take at your home.

- Designed for Mobile Homes – A perfect fit for mobile home door frames.
- Durable Aluminum Frame – Lightweight yet strong for long-lasting use.
- Full-View Glass – Allows maximum natural light inside.
- Built-in Screen – Provides fresh air while keeping bugs out.
- Weather-Resistant Seal – Helps with moisture and block drafts.
Because full individual scores are not available in the accessible listing, use those criteria as questions to investigate in model documentation and reviews rather than as proof that one named door performed best.
Check fit, handing, and installation before ordering
A correct model can still be the wrong purchase if it does not fit the opening or swing the way your entry requires. Follow the chosen manufacturer’s measuring instructions and confirm the door’s handing, hinge side, swing direction, reversibility, and required mounting space. Consumer Reports notes that most storm doors are not reversible.

- SIMPLE REPLACEMENT - For Larson, Andersen, Pella, Unique Home Design, EMCO, and many more.
- FOR USE ON A SINGLE DOOR (only one closer comes with touch button) - Easy to Install for new doors - See our video for the straight forward installation process
- Measure the opening using the manufacturer’s specified points and method.
- Check clearance from the main entry door, nearby walls, trim, and hardware throughout the swing.
- Confirm whether the handle and hinges can be configured for your preferred orientation.
- Review what the package includes, such as the handle, closer, mounting hardware, and instructions.
- Assess whether the opening is square and whether the frame needs adjustment.
Consumer Reports advises considering an installer when an opening is out of square or adjustments are complex. Installation time and difficulty vary; its test observations should not be treated as a quote or a universal DIY estimate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Account for sun and heat at the entry
A dark, full-glass storm door can trap heat between itself and the main entry door. Consumer Reports warns that this can be a concern on south- or west-facing entries, particularly in hot climates, and may lead to warping or damage to the door behind it. Consider the entry’s orientation, local climate, door color, ventilation, and compatibility with the main door before choosing a dark full-glass design. Ventilation or a lighter finish may be worth considering.

No storm-door energy-savings percentage is established by the sources cited here. Department of Energy guidance that surfaced in related searches concerns storm windows, not hinged storm doors, so its window ratings and advice should not be treated as storm-door certification or performance data.
Make the final comparison
Before choosing, compare the exact model documentation and your entry conditions—not just the words “full view” or “retractable.” Prioritize the features that address your actual use:
Quick Recap
- For the clearest view, look at full-view glass designs.
- For full-height screen airflow, compare interchangeable full-screen models.
- For convenience, consider a built-in retractable screen, while checking the available airflow area.
- For more lower-panel protection, compare partial-light designs.
- For a sunny, hot-facing entry, weigh glass area, finish, and ventilation carefully.
- For any model, verify fit, handing, swing, included parts, current price, and installation needs.
