The right choice depends on what you are fastening, the thickness of the material, whether the screw needs a drilling point, exposure to moisture or corrosive conditions, and the required head and drive. Match those details to the exact fastener’s installation instructions and performance data—not just its label.
Start with the material and its thickness
Identify every layer the screw must pass through and the material it will engage: thin sheet, a steel profile, wood, or a combination. A screw described as “steel” is not automatically suitable for drilling any thickness of steel. Check the manufacturer’s capacity tables and application limits for the specific product.
Diameter, thread profile and the receiving material affect strength. The required pilot-hole size can also vary with the fastener and material thickness, so a generic sizing chart cannot replace the product datasheet. SFS’s selection guidance explains these product- and substrate-dependent factors.
Know whether you need a tapping or drilling point
Self-tapping screws
A self-tapping screw forms or cuts threads in the material as it is driven. Depending on the screw and substrate, it may require a predrilled pilot hole. “Self-tapping” alone does not mean that predrilling can be skipped; follow the product’s instructions for hole size and installation.

Self-drilling screws
A self-drilling screw has a drill-like tip designed to make the entry hole and form or cut threads in one operation, within its stated capacity. SFS describes the point as the key difference: self-drilling screws do not require a pilot hole before application within their intended use. Do not assume that this applies beyond the screw’s rated material and thickness.
SAE J78_202107 covers carbon-steel self-drilling tapping screws and sets out mechanical and performance requirements for screws intended to drill a hole and form or cut mating threads without deforming their own thread or breaking during assembly. SAE lists the revision date as July 28, 2021; its public listing establishes the standard’s scope, not the full requirements of the paid standard. See the SAE J78_202107 listing.

Choose steel and corrosion protection for the exposure
Carbon steel is a common, cost-effective choice in less corrosive settings. Stainless steel generally offers greater corrosion resistance, but the result depends on the alloy and the particular product. Do not assume every stainless grade suits marine, chemical or other severe exposure. Coatings can protect carbon steel, but their suitability depends on the exposure, coating compatibility and expected service conditions. SFS summarizes material trade-offs in its fastener guidance.
For a job that needs a drilling point as well as a corrosion-resistant body, a bi-metal screw may be an option. For example, ADIT Fasteners describes its BIE product as having an AISI 304 stainless-steel body and a hardened C1035 carbon-steel drill tip. The manufacturer states capacity up to 6.5 mm profile thickness for that product; that figure is not a general limit or rating for other bi-metal screws. Check the product’s conditions and datasheet before relying on it. ADIT BIE product details.

Match head, drive and dimensions to the joint
Length, diameter and thread must suit the joint and the material being engaged. Head style affects bearing surface, clearance and finish: a countersunk head is intended for a flush finish when the receiving material and design allow it, while hex, hex-washer and pancake styles provide different profiles and bearing surfaces. Verify the actual geometry and application for the screw you are considering; names alone do not establish fit.
Choose a compatible drive and bit, then follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for tool operation, speed, torque and any pilot hole. Installation details matter to performance; the ICC-ES AC500 criteria document lists tool operation, including speed and torque, among the information considered in evaluation. The available AC500 document contains draft-context material, so it should not be presented as an adopted or binding code requirement without verifying its current status. ICC-ES AC500 document.

Use evaluated data for structural or code-regulated work
For load-bearing connections and building applications governed by codes or specifications, a general DIY buying guide cannot establish connection capacity. Select a fastener with evaluation data applicable to the intended use, materials and installation, and follow the relevant design documents. Confirm that any evaluation or standard is current and applies to your project; a product’s general description is not a substitute for that check.

- Identify the materials and thicknesses. Note the substrate, each layer and the thickness the screw must penetrate; check the product’s stated limits.
- Choose the point type. Use a tapping screw where its instructions and the material call for a pilot hole, or a self-drilling screw only within its rated capacity.
- Match material and coating to exposure. Consider moisture and corrosive conditions, and verify the specific alloy or coating’s suitability.
- Confirm geometry and installation. Check length, diameter, thread, head, drive, clearance and manufacturer instructions for the pilot hole, tool, speed and torque.
- Check application data for structural work. Use relevant evaluated product data and project requirements rather than inferring capacity from a generic screw type.
Compare actual candidate products on substrate and thickness capacity, pilot-hole requirement and point style, material and corrosion protection, head and drive geometry, and application-specific performance data. Price is useful only when current prices for suitable alternatives have been checked.
