For the 2025 picks, TechRadar named the VariDesk Pro Plus 36 its overall choice and the VIVO 32-inch Desk Converter its budget pick. Those are dated editorial selections, not independently verified recommendations for 2026. The right converter for your desk depends on available surface area, working height, equipment load and monitor setup—not just the advertised lift range.

TechRadar’s rankings and reported figures reflect its roundup last updated September 29, 2025. Check the current product listing for the exact model, configuration, capacity, warranty, stock and price before buying. The roundup identifies the VIVO unit as pneumatic rather than electric, but its article-time price is not a current quote. Branch specifications and warranty details should also be confirmed against the current product page. TechRadar’s MI-7934 article gives conflicting maximum monitor-size figures, so this comparison omits a screen-size limit.
How to tell whether a converter will fit your desk and working position
Measure the desk footprint and usable work area
Measure the clear desktop area, including space needed for a lamp, paperwork or other equipment. Compare it with the converter’s full footprint, not only the top platform. A converter must sit securely on the desk, and a smaller top can leave less room for a keyboard, mouse and accessories. The VIVO’s reported 31.5 × 15.8-inch surface, for example, is notably narrower front-to-back than the VariDesk Pro Plus 36’s 36 × 29.75-inch surface.

Check the working height, not just the lift number
A converter raises its platform above the desk; the desk itself already has a height. Add the converter’s platform height at the intended setting to the desk height, then consider where the keyboard and display will sit relative to your body. A broad adjustment range does not by itself establish that the combination will suit a particular user. Compare the full position you need with the converter’s actual lift range and the desk’s height.
Account for the complete load and monitor arrangement
Add the weight of the items the converter must support, including the display or displays, laptop, keyboard and accessories. Stay within the manufacturer’s stated capacity, and check whether an attached monitor arm is permitted and how its weight counts. Multiple displays can make load capacity and mounting compatibility decisive; a built-in monitor stand or a stated ability to support a monitor arm does not imply universal compatibility.

What the different lift and setup options mean
Manual, pneumatic and spring-assisted lifts
Several 2025 picks use assisted manual movement rather than an electric motor. TechRadar describes the VIVO as pneumatic, the Branch riser as spring-assisted, and the Mount-It! as gas-powered. These mechanisms avoid relying on an electric height control, but the roundup’s model descriptions alone do not establish how much effort a loaded unit requires in every setup.
Motorized adjustment
The FlexiSpot EM7 is the roundup’s motorized option. TechRadar reports a 44-pound load limit and says it lacks height presets. Consider whether powered adjustment is useful for your routine, and verify the current model’s controls, required power arrangement and capacity before purchase.

Assembly, cable handling and stability
TechRadar calls the Branch Desk Riser an assembly-free pick and describes the VariDesk Pro Plus as ready to use. Those setup advantages do not remove the need to position a converter securely or manage cables so they do not snag as the platform moves. Check the desk’s depth, the converter base and any cable slack through the full movement range. Stability at maximum height matters too; the cited roundup does not provide a common test comparing all models at that setting.
A practical comparison checklist
- Measure the desk. Confirm the converter’s base and usable platform fit the clear desktop space.
- Calculate the working position. Combine the desk height with the converter’s adjustment range and consider the keyboard and display positions you need.
- Total the load. Include all equipment that will move with the riser and compare it with the manufacturer’s capacity.
- Confirm monitor compatibility. Check the specific converter’s mounting interface, load guidance and support for your monitor arrangement; do not assume a generic arm will fit.
- Choose the lift type and setup. Decide whether assisted manual movement or motorized adjustment better suits how you will use it, then account for assembly and cable routing.
- Verify current details. Confirm the exact configuration, dimensions, warranty, availability and price on the current manufacturer or retailer listing.
Selection guidance from converter makers
Ergotron’s manufacturer-published guide suggests at least 16 inches of workstation height adjustment and at least 5 inches of monitor height adjustment, along with keyboard tilt from flat to −10 degrees, low adjustment force under load, counterbalance adjustable across a wide weight range, and repositioning without tools. These are Ergotron’s recommendations, not a neutral certification or universal standard. They can serve as a checklist, but actual fit and compatibility still depend on the user, desk and equipment.

A converter adds a sit-stand work position to an existing desk, which can be practical when replacing furniture is impractical or a workspace is compact. It also places another platform on top of the desk, so its footprint, combined height and equipment capacity must work with the existing setup.

If the converter cannot accommodate the display, keyboard and other equipment together, or its height does not suit the desk and user, a separate adjustable desk may be worth comparing instead. The 2025 roundup does not establish a universal winner between a converter and a full standing desk; that choice depends on the workspace and the equipment to be supported.
How to use a sit-stand setup comfortably
Standing time should be guided by comfort and individual needs rather than a fixed number taken from a product roundup. Change positions as appropriate and adjust the setup so the keyboard and screen remain usable in both positions.
